despite being quite a strict atheist I'm always polite to religious types who speak to me. The Jehovah's at the station always exchange pleasantries with me and I've chatted more than once with Mormons knocking my door. I find simply saying I'm an atheist who is not for converting but wishing them well leaves them with nowhere to go conversation wise. Being honest I respect their commitment to their religion. Only ones I've ever argued with are the Christians who picket abortion clinics in London, I'll happily tell them why they are wrong

If he really responded that your kids will die, then perhaps he is a bit misguided in his convictions (in terms of taste and approach rather than accuracy. It is a sad fact but we all die. No need to mention it though).

The ones that randomly ambush you with "Jesus loves you" while walking to get a bus or the megaphone cunts that stand and are all fire and brimstone.. Hell..hell...hell..

If they're the prevailing demographic in some sort of after life country club / resort in the sky, NO THANKS. that would be hell.

I'm polite to all.religious people, if I know someone has a faith I will check.my language, and keep a civil tounge in my head, but there are a few people that like to push, I give them the opportunity to leave the conversation at we have different beliefs, and if that fails, they get "the treatment".

Basically I try to convert them to bdsm, most walk away when I start trying to explain the joy that fills your heart when tying someone up and having your way with them, one bloke git as far as anal hooks before he concluded that I was a heathen, and beyond salvation, one of these days its going to happen, I'm going to end up with an ex Jehovah's witness as a sub, ill post it in stories and fantasise for your reading pleasure lol

It's called "bearing witness" or something like that. Seems to be an issue only with evangelist types.. Never met a Anglican pamplet pest ..or catholic pamplet pest (unless there's an anti abortion protest).

Just a ploy to lure in potential new sheep to keep bums on pews.

i played with the idea of joining the church of satan or whatever LaVey's outfit was called. couldnt give a monkeys about the whole religion thing - but this "church" gives out membership cards which i thought was amusing.. hehe i imagined it saying "you are believer number 666-1427-1873" hehe... think how useful it would be to ward off the "over-enthusiatic" religious chaps.. "sorry, i cant, im a member, see?".

It even had this (slightly cool) pentacle witha goat motif on it. it would be just perfect it it came with , i dunno, 10% off at john lewis or something.

.....Quoted straight from wiki,I think you didn't pay much attention when you were there maybe?

Jehovah's Witnesses teach that the present age of human existence is about to be terminated by the direct intervention ofJehovah (God), who will use Jesus Christ to fully establish his heavenly government over earth, destroying existing human governments and non-Witnesses,[6][7][8] and creating a cleansed society of true worshippers. They see their mission as primarily evangelical (disseminating "good news"), to warn as many people as possible in the remaining time before Armageddon.[9][10]All members of the religion are expected to take an active part in preaching.[11] Witnesses refer to all their beliefs collectively as "the Truth".[12]

If I want to join or find out about a holy order, I'll do it my own way and in my own good time.

These people are being impertinent attempting to impose their views on me, unsolicited. Thus I feel they deserve only my contempt and their approach gives me the right to be as rude to them as I wish.

Despite that, I usually give them a polite no thanks not interested. However, should they persist at all, then I'll give them as foul a mouthed tirade as I'm inclined to deliver at the time.

Vara - the words of the late, great Christopher Hitchens will soothe you. If you, or anyone else, has a few minutes spare it's well worth watching.

Imagine being at a debate, or even on the opposite side, when he was on this form!

I have to say, his take on religion rings truer and truer to me in this crazy world.

Street preaching religious halfwits have usually got the advantage over normal people, because they've got nothing better to do than stand in the street and spout gibberish. It would be nice to have the time to engage them in interesting debate, maybe asking questions like;

where does your god live?,

does he or she have a partner?,

what does he or she look like?,

does he or she have to go to the toilet?,

does he or she eat meat? like a drink? smoke?,

is your god actually a figment of your imagination?.

You talk to your imaginary master ?

Voices in your head ?

You think the non-believers are out to get you ?

You follow bizarre rituals which have no foundation in real life ?

These beliefs over ride all other emotions, rule of law, common decency etc ?

.... classic case of PSYCHOSIS

Without wanting to appear rude...

Nearly every religion has very nasty beliefs in its fundermentals!

Jehovah's witness's are probably amongst the worst (if your into rating these things, personally I'm not). To sum them up they belive in every word of the bible (think about some of the stuff in there, yes theres plenty of burning in hell), they think it can be scientifically explained, that the world is 4000 years old because that's what the Bible says, yes the word of God taken literally and written down!.

So when God says as it's written down that none believers(sinners) will burn in hell for eternity unless you repent, they take that literally!...

The bible, the Qur'an and the tora area full of pretty nasty stuff, the fundermentalists are just the people that follow that religion to the letter, the others have chosen to ignore certain bits as society as evolved.

If you don't want a violent, hurtful religion you could always become a Jainist where any violence even towards insects is a mortal sin (hence why Gandhi was happy to have the shit kicked out of him while protesting)... Of course it doesn't make Jainism any more "truthful" than any of the rest, it's just another cult by another name.

I'm fortunate that my expression probably says it all. I've neve been approached and the only time they've come to my door I very politely told them I was content in my sinner lifestyle and they were way too late.

It bothers me hugely but I'm equally bothered by politicians canvassing. At the time of the referendum I came home to a leaflet through the door. I hadn't even taken my coat off before the knock at the door. He launched into his spiel before I'd properly opened the door and said he'd put a leaflet through a moment before so I said jolly good, have you come back to collect it? I said that I objected to the money wasted on such rubbish when people are hungry and homeless and he insisted that he pays for all the leaflets from his own pocket. I said in that case you get paid too much.

He then proceeded to insult my intelligence by suggesting I didn't bother to vote. No I said simply, I just don't vote for you and closed the door while he was still chuntering on about paying for his own leaflets.

I don't consider myself religious but it has to be said, when we were considered a Christian country with Christian values life in general was a lot simpler and easier. As every Christmas becomes less about baby Jesus and more about money and excess our collective well being declines accordingly.

Horsham

Last time the Jehovah lot turned up at my door I was in the middle of cleaning the R6 on the drive, being polite I went to turn the hose off at the tap. They noticed my paintball guns on a bench as I was making a few bits for them, my God you would have thought I had raped someone. They were the final straw in me following main stream religion, I am a relaxed Catholic and will stay very relaxed.

"When i said sorry im not interested politely 3 times. I was told my life had no meaning amd my kids would die and im an idiot

That doesn't sound particularly religious. What makes you think they are from a "religious brigade?"

The jesus loves you leaflet he was trying to give me xx

If he really responded that your kids will die, then perhaps he is a bit misguided in his convictions (in terms of taste and approach rather than accuracy. It is a sad fact but we all die. No need to mention it though)..

Its the Jehovah's witness's bunch, if you've ever read a watchtower, you'll notice that what they're repeating is what they've read!.

Your kids will indeed burn in hell if you don't repent

I don't think it would be jws or lds as I've been in both churches and never in all my time there was anything resembling what you described mentioned....as for burning in hell... The jws definitely do not teach that

But....all said and done....religion is your own belief and should not be rammed down your throat....i am happily removed from religion except worshipping the cock (when I have time)

Fatbird.Well I read the watchtower when they hand it me!.

It's absolutely full of repenting, it's the main message of that religion that there will be a day of reckoning!.

If your not in, your kids and yourself burn in hell..

Like I said there not being deliberately rude, it's just their beliefs

they believe that 144000 people will live in the kingdom if heaven, and the rest will live eternal lives on earth, and if you are a sinner, you just, die, and you never get reserected, no real mention if hell but they don't half run with the idea of the apocalypse.

incidentally, 144000 places in heaven, is part ofthe rastafari religious teachings, so they have that in common at least

Yep, that's pretty much it.... As I said before, no mention of burning in hell. Shit hot on Armageddon thought....far too long and complicated to go on........Quoted straight from wiki,I think you didn't pay much attention when you were there maybe?

Thanks for the wiki info....STILL doesn't mention burning in hell...as that isn't their belief.

I know full and well about Armageddon, the 144,000, the resurrection, the perfect earth, living forever, blah blah

....spent MANY years clearly not listening, when in fact I really can't be bothered typing about bollocks as I feel religion is the root of all evil. God....biggest mass murderer EVER.

my daughter was withheld urgent medical procedures because her sperm donor told the Drs she was a Jehovah's witness

Reading the watchtower, awake and wiki doesn't give you a correct insight to the religion. Actually living it for years gives you more of an correct idea

Because Wikipedia is never wrong is it, this was a part of my childhood, so a lot if my childhood in the 80s was spent crying because the end of the world was coming, and ad to that the threat if nuclear war, and you end up with a kid who is so fucked up, that I could hardly function, and some if the things that "elders" were up to showed that when you out man in charge of divine text, they interpret it to suit their own needs and lusts. It's fucked up that you posted from Wikipedia, to pro e your point against people who have lived in it."

.

Firstly, don't take it personally, I made an initial assertion that it would be JWs as it fits there MO ie there evangelical, they belive in the Bible word for word so yes they do assume you'll be burning in hell as the Bible is quite clear(I can look up the relevant verses if you want?) That doesn't mean EVERY jw believers it, just like every Muslim doesn't belive in killing cartoonists for blasphemy!.

I don't think it's "fucked up" to quote an online encyclopaedia in a debate on what are the key beliefs of the JW religious doctrine.

Rather than using wiki....read the articles they use.... They have a book (as did I ) used to validate their teachings called Reasoning from the scriptures. Non believers indeed go to hell...but there is no burning, devils and tormented souls.... It's just the place you go when you're dead... The ground.... No where , nothing, no hope of resurrection into the paradise earth

That's pretty similar to the catholic explanation of hell too - with an element of being a sinner and not seeking forgiveness leading to hell of your own creation through guilt / suffering of your own conscience.

But no doubt because Dante wrote Inferno in the fourteenth century, that now means all Catholics believe in hell as physical places of real pain and burning and stuff.

Then the King will say to those on his right: ‘Come, you who have been blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the founding of the world..

Whenever I come into the religion threads my head starts hurting.

My father was once stopped at a fair in rural upstate new york. The guy was a Christian trying to preach the bible. I was about 6ish. When my father said he was agnostic the guy told him, while looking at my brother and me, that we were all damned to hell. When my father asked if he meant just my father or his kids as well, the guy said the children of a blasphemer couldn't go to heaven.

So I figure I've got nothing to lose.

No I'm simply pointing out where some people get their beliefs from!

That doesn't mean you HAVE to have those beliefs to be a JW, I'm saying those that do have them are following a perfectly well written down easy to follow doctrine.

Except quoting select bits of the OT and Revelations is completely ignoring the ACTUAL religious teaching which most people receive - picking the nasty bits of the Bible doesn't constitute "doctrine" no matter how much you would like it to.

"I've just remembered that the Socialist Worker crew shouted "die evil scum" at me a few years ago when I wouldn't sign their bullshit Palestine petition or something. "
.

Well if we could find a passage in the socialist workers manifesto that said all geordie birds are "evil scum", then I think we could presume why this person held this belief to shout it at you!.

Of course that wouldn't mean all of the "socialist worker crew" would hold that belief, some may choose to ignore it.

However we could conclude that the "socialist worker manifesto" was indeed following a doctrine of hatred towards Geordie birds, whether or not one or all the participants choose to follow it?

But that would be a different scenario - because the socialist worker manifesto would, presumably, have been written in more recent times to form an actual manifesto for those who choose to believe in it to live by.

Unlike the Bible. Which was written many, many hundreds of years ago, is a product of its time culturally and isn't equivalent to religious guidance.

"Scratch that, can't be arsed. You just keep on telling people what they believe, even when it bears no resemblance to what they actually believe..

.

No the key points of the JW religion is that the Bible is literally word for word the direct utterings of God...

You don't need to look hard to find really bad stuff, you don't need to look hard to find really good stuff either... However I don't let Jimmy saville of his crimes for his charity work and I hold that principle to God as well

This is something we both know even though were from different beliefs.

Not all religions see it that way though

I just typed a long and drawn out post about all this, but I'm never going to get my point across here, not when it means so.much to someone to be right, even though they are clearly wrong, I can't be arsed, last post from me, you can take that as a victory if that's what you need in your life, but ive got better things to do than copy and paste the whole bible for the sake if not admitting being wrong, so go tell people how impressive you have been today, and everyone else ill see you when my ban is up

Wow that must make all the pain of the tattoos extra worth while. I'd love to see them
