The World Health Organisation has said that MBT (mercaptobenzothiazole) which is contained in condoms and babies dummies amongst many other things is a carcinogen.

Since 20% of the population die of cancer whilst AIDs sufferers have a normal life expectancy in the UK this could for some provide serious food for thought.

Okay...but how long do you have to wear one before they have a significant effect and how is that carcinogen absorbed into the human body?

The article in The Telegraph says they're no risk to the general public but people working in the manufacture of them and other products should be wary.

"The article in The Telegraph says they're no risk to the general public but people working in the manufacture of them and other products should be wary."

I still expect to hear bareback fans using this argument for at least the next decade.

It may replace "I have a latex allergy" in the top spot of excuses.

Everything's a carcinogen, basically.

Best stay cooped up, barricaded indoors in our tinfoil hats and hazmat suits

What's with the reference to HIV positive people? They have condoms in their sexual health practices like everyone else.

mercaptobenzothiazole is used in rubber products, so latex free may be fine. And you'll likely to be exposed to it via other sources.

Just give up smoking them and you'll be fine

They say the risk is about the same as eating processed meat. But that is for members of the general public. I guess swingers wear condoms for far longer than the general public on average.

because AIDS is the only possible outcome of ditching the condom

Yeah, they made it sound like they'd take AIDS over cancer.

No to both, thanks.

Become celibate? Risk STIs, Or risk it whilst pressing for the carcinogen to be removed from condoms.

Fear of death from HIV is the often quoted reason for using condoms yet cancer kills 1:5 of the population and, for example, flu 12,000 per year in the uk.

If you have a tendancy to have cancer in your family a STI may be the least risky alternative. Does that explain it?
