Tony Blackburn sacked by BBC

A rather strange one, it's all connected with the Jimmy Savile case. There doesn't seem to be any suggestion that he was actually involved, the one allegation against him was withdrawn and he was cleared.

He appears to have been sacked over whether he was interviewed by then DG Billy Cotton or not.

All very strange

"Accused of some kind of underage shenanigans, charges dropped, girl killed herself. No further action."

No, the alleged story is that he knew of Jimmy Saville's activities, and that he was interviewed with respect to that. Not that he was involved himself

Also the mother of the poor girl later said the claims were not true

It's all a bit strange, heard it briefly on the news earlier.

NW London

I read on the paper that he'd been accused of sexual contact with a 15 year old girl about 35 years ago and has been fired by the beeb prior to the investigation.

It's more likely that he has refused to exonerate the BBC of any coverups and would not be surprised if in the past had even said something about savil to the higher ups and been told to keep quiet or lose his job.

I would be most surprised if he had ever done anything wrong on that front to be honest. for Tony

It reads that he hasn't been sacked over any allegations that he was involved in any shenanigans but that his recollection of events doesn't tally with the official BBC line over a meeting that may or may not have happened with the DG over 40 years ago. An absurd reason to sack him now.

Apparently his lack of acceptance of a meeting that took place, which goes against the corroborated views of multiple others, is a key reason. Interesting though, I imagine the level of sensitivity amongst the BBC is sky high, don't think he's appealing though, which forces me to wonder what actually did or didn't go on. Bizarre.

Obviously I don't know the full story but isn't it quite common for evidence to conflict? Maybe there's suggestion of a cover up either from him or the multiple others.

He was completely exonerated at the time. The girl retracted her statement, the girls mother stated that it happened and the Coroner cleared him. The problem seems to be all on the BBC side

Yes I read that. No doubt in the fullness of time we will get the half truth, filtered to suit somebody importants agenda.

I wondered if someone else started a thread as I posted one with exactly the same title heading not long after midnight and it only got one post which I thought rather odd. I will miss his Saturday afternoon show

Apparently the BBC report says he was interviewed and he vehemently states he was not. The BBC sacked him because he would not toe the corporate line.

Stupid question. Why did program makers allow 15 year old girls on top of the pops in the first place. Seems absurd to me. What were her parents thinking of to allow it. It would seem they were just pimping out young girls for JS to perve and assault.

The whole thing just beggars belief. It would seem my old Dad was right all those years ago, He used to switch the telly off as soon as that theme tune came on and banned us from watching it LOL.

I want suprised. Two people on two different occasions told me about Tony Blackburn hanging around with Gary Glitter in the 70's, near schools. I was in denial about it until yesterday coz I'd always liked Blackburn. Could be that he's had to take the bullet as part of this smoke screen.

The Beeb lost control of who was turning up for filming, there was a 15 year age limit but girls used to break in to television centre.
