O o O oo

This dog was being reported on the News just now.

She is a Medical Assistance Dog ( was going to just put the initials but it spelt out MAD ) for a young girl with Diabetes and is trained to "smell" when the girls sugar levels drop. He then licks her to let the people around her know she needs help. The experts don't know what the different smell is but the dog does.

The gorgeous labrador went to school with her and sat with his head on her desk staring at her.

These dogs are so clever

Apparantly dogs can also smell cancer .

I think its amazing what the dogs can do.

Should be more but it cost loads to train them

Saw it on the news this dinner time but how long will it be until the health and safety nuts say you can't bring them into schools?

Its very very hard to discriminate against dogs that assist.

They use a clause in the "human rights bill" i think ?

Though dont quote me

These dogs are fantastic - I've been present during one of these doggy consultations for skin cancer, with the dog sniffing all over the patient's bare legs. I recently read an article about a similar medical pooch that can sniff out bowel cancer. I decided I didn't really want to be present during that particular diagnostic session

Angus & Findhorn

I watch the guide dogs being trained in Forfar and it is always a joy to behold.

You can see the dedication in the dogs eyes.

Very Humbling...

Friend of mine just took on a puppy for 12 months which will later be trained as a guide dog.

Amazing list of do's & dont's they have in the massive handbook they were given - so the Dog knows whats what from it's formative years.

Actually quite humbling when you see the raining the dogs have to go through to make the grade.

I'm sure a lot of peoples kids would benefit from similar!

Its not just dogs that are good as therapy and assistance animals.

Worked with horses and the RDA (RIding fro the disabled), some of these kids that have varying mental and physical issues, just seem to glow and come alive when they are around the horses, it quite something!

Also the horses and ponies that they use are so patient and kind with the kids- even the ones that can occasionally be very cheeky!

I disagree: it's the parents that need training!
