I read an article stating that, more women have artificial hips in later life than men. due to the way they have sex.

Bollocks . It's nothing to do with how to have sex :

Women's hips are wider (proportionally). The pelvis is different, the hip bone/ joint is positioned slightly differently to men; therefore there are different stresses.

Plus hormonal differences, especially at a " certain age" means that women are more susceptible to bone changes and arthritic issues.
