Brighton - even Hove!

Don't drain the pond. Change half the filter. If it's clogged it's doing its job, just un clog it. Wear clogs.

I thought you were being rude about the Americans, you'd have felt the wrath of our friends Marc and Courtney and Fabio if you had.

Central

Organic matter falls in and decays, such as from autumn leaf fall and old plant decay. Prevent it getting in and there's less to filter and clean.

The water contains micro organisms that process waste, which is why you shouldn't replace all the water in one go - coupled with understanding the nitrogen cycle.

If there are pond plants, you may have too many or would be better off with other types. They can shade the water, preventing algae blooms as well as oxygenate it.

Don't over feed the fish or overstock the pond. More food and waste will overload it and mean more filter work.

Removing any waste, dead plant material quickly is ideal.

try reading up on the nitrogen cycle of a pond. you need to know how it works so you can mantain it's balance. it's pretty simple stuff to understand and there's plenty of websites to look at on the subject.
