Shoulder problem...

Edinburgh

I've had an issue with my shoulder for a while and I can't decide whether it's worth seeing either a sports massage person or a physio or an osteopath so I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences.

I'm loathed to go to the doctor over it. I stopped carrying my massive handbag and it cleared up and didn't give me any issues for a wee while but it's come back so now I don't know if it's got nothing to do with the weight of my handbag but more to do with the way I sit at work/home.

I've not bothered to take any painkillers as yet but it's really bothered me today and now seems to be going into my neck.

Any advice?

A doctor prescribed physio would be the best option, just in case it's not a serious problem that needs medical intervention.

I had a pain in my shoulder a while back that was quite painful so I went to the doctors who said it was sciatica...

I am still getting flare ups and take quite strong pain killers for it...so I would go and see your GP if I was you as you never know..

It may do, sometimes muscle strains can twinge for months. Won't take long for a doctor to take a look.

Brighton - even Hove!

Maybe a frozen shoulder? The constant weight of a bag on one shoulder can cause problems.

Agree with the others OP. It can be something mild and temporary (muscles sprain) or something which might be long standing (nerves, tendons, bones). Best to get yourself properly examined by your GP.

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

Could be many things, start with your gp... They'll likely suggest physio or another treatment option...

They don't call them physioterrorists for nothing though..

It's the opposite shoulder to the one I carry my bag on - well used to... now I have a little dinky bag and I stopped carrying my camera every day.

I just figured I was over compensating for the weight of my bag.

You only get 3 to 4 sessions of physio these days and, there is usually a waiting list.

I had success with a chiropractor and,the exercises he gave me helped.

It feels a bit like an ache that's there all the time but when I touch it, it feels like it does when you touch a bruise. I can still move my arm full range and it doesn't hurt more or less when I do that. It's just weird. A dull ache but constant rather than coming and going.

I can't use a bag on my shoulder either or it's really painful. It's neuropathy problem unfortunately for me.

Yes, go to the doctor. You should go if anything doesn't clear up in a few days because it means your body is struggling.

Hereabouts

Try ibuprofen and a warm bath if you don't wanna see your GP. But if it doesn't improve, you should really see a doctor. And rucksacks are better for you that handbags, just saying

And you can use freeze gels if you don't want to take painkillers, they do help a lot.

weird that your bag was on the other shoulder though.

Don't mean to worry you but see your GP.

This happened to a friend last year and when they eventually did a scan they found her cancer had come back worse than ever.

And she'd had her 5 year all clear the year before

You can self refer to a Physio here, guess it's the same where you are. I injured mine in an accident and had a rotor cuff injury which the Physio really helped with.

You can talk through your symptoms on the phone and they will tell you if they think they can help.

Take Ibuprufen between now and then - sometimes a consistent course of anti-inflammatories will solve it, and it would be good to have tried that before you go, it may be the first thing she suggests you do - docs are not good on diagnosis on musculo-skeletal problems on the whole.

I had a recurrent 'jivers shoulder' which was starting to cause numbness in my arm, but actually using it a lot more by swimming cured it. Go figure.

Apparently it's a muscular problem. The doctor gave me ibuprofen gel to use three times a day. Just as well I have good friends.

He reckons the osteopath is my best bet so that's next week.

I would definately recommend an osteopath, mine seems to sort out any aches / pains I have a lot quicker (& cheaper) than the chiropractors my friends see.

Just back from my appointment and I can't decide if I feel faint, need coffee, feel better, feel knackered or a bit of all of that!

She made my neck and back make noises I've never heard them make before. She let me swear too cause bits of it really fucking hurt but I'm actually really pleased I went.

Immediately she knew something was wrong. It's not my shoulder, it's my collar bone.

Going back next week... she reckons she'll have it fixed in two sessions. Money well spent I say!

Thanks for all your advice.

Be very careful with Osteopath's, although its good to hear you are on the mend, most the time its all to do with the mind and placebo effect which osteopath's know only too well and you walk away thinking you are fixed and feeling much better

Unless you have private Health Insurance and get a MRI scan then its a guessing game for all involved

The good thing is that if you don't need pain killers it cant be that bad

I have shoulder pain at the moment.

Think it's because I've slept funny.

I don't like taking pills though.

The shoulder in itself is a very complicated joint as it moves in several directions. Having torn my rotator cuff many times from being stupid. The only advice I can offer you is gentle stretching and rest. If this doesn't help and you have damaged it before I would get a scan of the shoulder to see what has torn, strained or sprained. If injured before it could be scar tissue affecting it. Know what you're dealing with before you start seeing physio's so go the Dr and see if he will refer you.

So glad you seem to have this sorted OP but do please keep an eye on things and if the pain/feeling returns then go back for a second opinion. I presented with pains in my arm over 2 years ago and was misdiagnosed twice! I finally insisted on an ultrasound and then on his advice an MRI. Turned out it was something completely different and the treatment advised by my GP had actually caused further problems! I'm still suffering now

I've been to the docs. He told me it was a muscle issue and reckoned the osteopath was the right move.

I'll keep an eye on it. Feel a bit like I've been in a fight now thought.

that's interesting, its not often doctors or surgeons recommend or refer to Osteopaths, the surgeons I saw couldn't find a good word to say about ospeopaths

I had a shoulder issue and the pain was going to my chest.

The doctor said it was a muscle strain and give it time with pain kilkers if they were needed. It's taken about 12 weeks to clear but still reminds me every so often if I over do it

Okay so is it fairly normal to come out in bruises after seeing an Osteopath?
