level of a the ground in a quite large garden, that has been overgrown for years, all been cut down now, but that ground is all lumps and bumps

I did one of my mate's lawns a few years ago. Hired a rotavator to break it all up, fertiliser, then plenty of raking until it looked about right, followed by using a long piece of (straight) 2x4 as a level drawing it across the area in sections, in both directions. Repeated raking and levelling until it was good enough, then laid Rolawn turf (has to be pre-ordered as it's harvested early and sold same day).

Though I say it myself, it was a pretty bloody good job - even their gardener said so (he couldn't spare the time to do it as he has a round of customers he does every week)

Medium - Rotavator

Worst - spade, fork and rake

Or think outside the box, get topsoil delivered and bring the garden level to the highest point

the soil is so full of routes from brambles and s I will definitely need to put quite a bit of top soil down.

I spent weeks getting rid of bind roots by digging them out. I've turned over a 100ft by 40ft grassed area with a fork but a rotorvater is the best for that. Pull up bind roots before they get chopped up or they regrow. Level it with a hoe and your feet in wellies.

I sprayed the whole garden a few months ago with industrial strength killer, it's the stuff the farmers use, no sign of anything growing back yet, that may change as the weather warms up, I intend covering the whole area in a barrier.

Wasn't there a thing about people painting blue rectangles on their lawn so it looked like they had a swimming pool on Google Earth
