Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

How ethical do you want the account to be?

Depends on the turnover of the business, some offer special rates for small businesses or first year of being with the bank etc.

I'm with natwest, always been OK with me.. When you join they give you 2 years free banking, which is great..

I currently pay 5 squidly a month but get automated credits free.. sting me on cash and cheques though..

My advice would be to stick with a ordinary personal account, unless you're a Ltd company, which changes things..

Avoid Santander - they messed up pretty much everything they possibly could with mine.

Strangely we have had a business bank account with Santander for the last 15 years and have to say they have been excellent. Only draw back is you can only bank through the atm's or on line.

That's why I left Santander for some accounts I managed, it was an old Alliance and Leicester account and santander were awful. Lloyds Bank are pretty good, and always had great customer service with them.

Lloyds is good.

They will all sting you for cash and cheques (apart from the free accounts) as those are the payment methods that cost overheads to process.

Santander is also ok though I dont like their online system, though it has improved on what it was a few years back (two completely different systems for business and personal.

The Lloyds online system is virtually identical between business and personal.

The only thing I would say however is if you may end up trading on the wrong side (ie in overdraft) then I would always prefer to have personal and business accounts with different banks.

What Barclays lack is the ability to control user privileges. For example, with HSBC (and most banks) you can allow your accountant to login to your account but control what they can do (e.g. they can pay bills up to £200 but anything over £200 needs your approval). This saves you a tonne of time.

With Barclays anyone who logs in can do anything so your account could be cleaned out and your accountant is on a beach before you know about it.

I never imagined any account would lack such a basic feature but Barclays does. Make sure you check you have this feature whoever you choose.

Durham Tees

It can depend on what type of transactions you mostly do. Some Bank accounts will be good for lots of small transactions, where you pay in to the Bank frequently and accept several types of customer payments, cash, credit, transfers etc. They might suit retail or small value service companies. Other Bank accounts will be better if your £50k is made of larger invoices, which may be less frequent, say monthly, which mostly happen by electronic transfer or cheque. It is worth looking for one which doesn't charge you lots for the type of transactions you will mostly do.

That's what I meant, does the OP need a business account. Not someone in general

In different towns too. Don't bank in your own town.
