You've got to know when to hold 'em

Know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your money

When you're sittin' at the table

There'll be time enough for counting

When the dealin's done

I used to work in a bookies, I watched a guy lose 10 grand in about 2 hours. His girlfriend and baby were watching through the glass door, and his creditor came in to the shop half way through and started yelling at him. The guy was crying and holding his head in his hands. It was an all round horrible experience.

You might think that you're only spending what you can afford right now, but it's a serious addiction and it will get worse.

Most people find that they end up alone and it makes them terribly unhappy. If you're worried there are helplines and people to speak to. Please get help before it gets worse.

It's not about the winning, if it was you would walk away when you are ahead. It's about how long you can make your money last before it's gone. That's the only time you will walk away

And I assume you're talking electronic roulette here. Which has a computer program to fix the results and odds.

They have to pay out a percentage of takings, so will be programmed to mostly lose, but give teasing wins while you're feeding the coins.

It sounds simple to walk away because it is. Unless you're addicted, in which case, get help.

Used to work with a guy in glasgow and on pay day he'd have me stop at the bookies and more often than not he'd come out having lost the majority of his wages. Caused him umpteen problems at home.

The bottom line is that a bookies is a business. They wouldn't exist if they didn't take more money off you than they gave out.

This is much harder than you think, with there been websites and mobile apps anyone who wants to gamble can find a way, you can't self exclude from on line accounts you have to download software that prevents using the sites, the best way is to hand over control of your money and cards to someone you trust,

Any gambling should be entertainment not about winning because the house always wins in the end.

I have a brother who plays high stakes poker in Vegas around 4 times a year, he wins he loses but never more than he can afford to throw away.

He has a good time as they put him up feed him and of corse keep an eye on exactly what he wins and loses LoL.

They watch everyone ??

The only reason bookies now open shops is so they can put fixed odds machines in them as they make so much profit for them.

I do enjoy the odd trip to a casino and the gee gees but I don't understand the appeal in gaming machines where winning isn't based purely on luck but on payout settings

Think with machines is you lose all sense of reality and forget that it pays out when they want, you think you see patterns and fool yourself in to thinking you actually know what the machine is going to do, oh 21 has come that means 12 will follow shortly, and sometimes it does and that reinforces your belief you can beat the machine, and you forget the 15 times 12 hasn't followed 21

I don't know anything about online gambling, I only ever gamble on the lottery and view that as giving 80 pence to charity, 80 pence to the company 5 pence to the shop and the rest to some lucky bugger who beats the odds.

But I do know about gambling machines, and they are not at all random, they are set to pay out a percentage of what is put in, typically 20% though you can adjust it to increase payouts to 30% if the machine is not attracting enough mugs to put coins in it

Last summer, I used £280 to win £2700 on roulette obviously not in a day but within the space of 3 weeks. The very day I decided to go round it up to £3k, I lost everything as I was being selfish by putting in £100 for each spin. The lady who works there noticed what was going on and reduced the max bet to £50 but it didn't make me stop as I thought well it's their money anyways. She felt really bad for me because and tried to stop me from loosing more and I used to tip her £30 if I won over £400 as she was a very nice, lovely and friendly woman. I went to the gym instead of the bank as I had planned earlier on. I don't regret its a one off thing and know that I would have spent that money on things I don't really need either ways.

Central

Gambling is not something to pursue in order to win back or rebalance the books, after losses imo.

Only gamble each single time if you're comfortable with losing and walking away.

I've spent much less than your bet there op, during my entire life, because I don't have that will to be able to manage it, imo.

I'd also be concerned about you losing money that perhaps could be better spent on improving the quality of your life. But your tastes are unique to you and are not ours.

If your gambling investment in a year is equivalent to a fantastic holiday, consider investing each time into separate savings for an additional trip somewhere. If you're single and wayward, to some extent, spend some time caring for others who perhaps don't have so much of their lives left. It sometimes helps me to see more clearly what it is that I want to get from my short life in this world.

Stop now. I know 3 people who lost their homes by gambling. Two came home from card games and told their wives to pack up their belongings, they no longer owned their houses. One kept remortgaging his to bet on horses until the bank repossessed it.

Plymouth and Newcastle (sometimes)

Have you ever seen a bookie or casino owner driving round in a clapped out car and wearing 'working clothes' and a hi viz? Need we say any more?

We enjoy a good flutter at Casinos both in London and Vegas + horse racing (cheltenham in 4 weeks) - and a few crazy big bets on the football each year, gamble what you can afford to lose only

P.O. Box DE1 0NQ

I gave up playing fruit machines when it was 50p a pint. Used to give the barman a £1 note and put the change in the machine, so it was costing a quid a pint 99% of the time anyway

Las Vegas.

You think that place was built by altruism and philanthropy?

It's a city built on 'sure things', bad mathematics and and that the house always wins.
