I have a billion days holiday that I need to take fairly soon (I'm the sad fucker that never takes any).

Any good ideas for a cheap (I'm saving for house!) holidays alone? I've back packed alone but I can't be arsed with something like that - I just want to either relax or do something cool without having to meet people!

Anyone been in a similar position and found something awesome?

Any city break is easy to do alone. I spent two weeks in NYC. I'm thinking San Fran next time. Solo holidays are ace!

I once went on an awesome trip alonw. I was invited by my University professor who would plan a trip to Greece every year with other University staff. It was an archeology trip and it was full of amazingly intelligent people. So I would recommend you find a group that does trips like these, with groups of people who don't know each other.

Unless you would rather be alone alone, in which case I guess you could go anywhere....

On that note, I will be in NYC for 2 weeks in May and I'm not averse to showing British tourists around

I would suggest a city break, don't need a companion to sight see.

Do you have any interests that you can combine with a holiday ie sailing / yoga / painting / skiing that kind of thing?

If it was me I'd go to some of the more inaccessible historic locations, like the Temple of Artemis, etc. You can get cheap flights and accommodation in advance and then just hire a car instead of the organised excursions.

Just done 3 years alone - 50 odd countries across 6 continents. Alaska or anywhere in the US they will welcome a lone Brit with open arms. Easier when they speak the language too.

Inbox me if you're wanting to sound ideas.

I did Africa alone but I'd only recommend Namibia - no people and you can be at one with nature!

Come to Birmingham and the Black Country, its great, we have more canals than Venice, Spain might have a lot if bull rings, but ours is bigger, and twice as dangerous, go off the beaten track and you will find the real city that never sleeps, where you can get fried chicken, and a haircut, at any time of day.

Visit historical ruins, like the ancient villa in aston, and see the places that such culturally important tv shows were filmed, ie, crossroads, doctors.

Like leather? Take a trip to walsal, and visit the leather museum, or if wild life is your thing, dudly zoo, has exotic creatures, and twats just the people from tiptoe, speaking if tipton, hungry? Settle down for a bite it twenty, at the world famous our factory, where they literally shovel your mixed grill in your plate sizzling like the skin of the workers of the once world renowned foundrys of the area.

Before yo goo, as the locals say, stop off for some of the best shopping to be had in the country, with a 3 floor primark, there is something for everyone, once you leave Birmingham and the black country, its never goodbye, more, as we say in these parts, TARAH A BIT

Thanks all for the input - gives me something to chew on.

There's loads I'd like to go and do but it's more of a case of what is viable at the moment.

I just looked on Icelolly and didn't realise how cheap an off-peak all inclusive holiday could be - I spend more than that on a night out! Not sure if I fancy something like that though.

Need to have a bit more of a think.

I would recommend finding a cheap return flight to anywhere you fancy going and when you get there use the agents at that airport to find accommodation...they usually deal with the hotels direct which works out so much cheaper than prebooking in the uk..

Central

I'm always off somewhere alone and find focusing on what I need from the break first and foremost is ideal. Then matching those needs with a comprehensive list of affordable places helps narrow it.

Lisbon is fairly close, small, adjacent to the coast and really interesting. It's affordable too. Warmer than the UK and generally better weather.

Berlin's much bigger, closer and can be affordable - weather varies depending upon when you're going. Amsterdam can be very relaxing and low cost.

For unwinding with interests aplenty, consider a range of regions and cities in southern Spain. Can hire a villa etc, so not needing to mingle or stand out, compared to a hotel stay.

Cyprus weather is great all year and airlines like Monarch fly from regional airports. Could explore and move around a bit - hotels and apartments etc.

Guernsey is quiet, relaxing and very close - I've always loved it there, compared to Jersey, its busier neighbour.

I'll always take a break in the north east, Newcastle, Durham etc. You can easily scoot up to Edinburgh, which is awesome, any time of year.

Guernsey really is something special. It costs a couple of quid for a bus ticket round the island and there are so many sights to see. Many of them would be owned here and cost to get in but there they are free. Stay in St Peters Port. Good views, good food. Easy to get to.

when i split up with ex missus I wondered what I would do with summer holidays...took some time with my girls but the with the rest I decided that I would volunteer at some music festivals....some ask for a deposit others don't..you do 3 shifts...some give you food most give you a tshirt...you get separate camping and you get to meet a wide range of people..been doing it for 5 years now and now work in industry too my holidays are still based around humping stuff on and off stages in muddy fields..and you get the best seat in the house you can also volunteer for national trust and such like for the week too!

You can do it same day if you have to, and can get to one of the passport centres. I always end up having to do that because I leave it too late. A couple of weeks if you do it the postal way I think?

"Nice, much better than I expected. There is apparently (and unsurprisingly) a passport office in London to so it shouldn't be much of a problem if I totally fuck up.

Thanks."

You know there are people in London and you might have to interact with them, don't you?

Come to London and have a G&T with me, I get £50 allowance from client for subsidence and I struggle some days to spend it

Then we can go to rios, just need to leave my coat on my chair and people will assume I'm in workshop - then I get paid

Chams or Socials

"I know have accrued a months holiday I need to take!

How long does it take to get a new passport?

If you apply now it won't take long. My niece got hers in a week."

I applied online & posted the forms last Monday. I got my passport last Friday

Have you decided on a place, then? If you're getting a passport I assume there is a plan?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

As you've got the time why don't you go to Winchester for a day just to see what's there?

Plus, day out in London. Bonus!"

I like an impromptu trip to the capital, I might go there for my next passport too

"I have a cupboard you'd fit in so you didn't have to meet anyone?

I like this idea you could do a Fab tour of the country I'm sure the lovely ladies of the forums would be happy to host you "

This was my plan last summer but then got knocked off the bike

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Do you drive? Chuck a bag in the boot, get on a ferry and do an impromptu tour of European cities. Stay in hostels to keep costs down. I've done this twice and doing it again this summer. Off to Rome this time.

I'm trying to talk my boss into giving me the whole lot off at once so I can maybe bugger off to Thailand for 3-4 weeks, but I just looked at my work diary and have things to do until 20th May.

You are, perhaps, the only thing I can think of that might make camping appealing.

Tell her/him that it's not possible to use it all up and get everything done. What's their priority? Also remind them that you will need to be paid for the leave you can't take if the work can't be shifted.
