Fifty years ago last year, we decided to go metric. Right cock-up we've made of that.

little house on the praire

I started school in 1970 and we where the first year to learn pounds and pence.

I remember for years the older generation (mum and grandma etc) translating everything back to pounds and shillings to compare the prices.

Metric pffft I was taught both and still use imperial.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

The distance measurements on the London Underground have been measured in metric since they were first built whilst the modern railway of England, Scotland and Wales still uses miles and chains for measurements. And for those who don`t know what a chain is - 22yards or the length between the wickets on a cricket pitch.

I was also born in 1973.

I don't understand pre-decimal money and I use the decimal system there.

However, for length/distance I can use and understand both metric and imperial and can convert between them easily. Sometimes I use one, sometimes the other. If I'm measuring to to DIY I'll use millimetres but I give my height in feet and inches and can't remember it in centimetres.

For weight, I can use either system and can convert between them easily. I know my weight in stones and pounds though, not kilos.

Central

I get annoyed with the number of UK shows that insist on using metric measurements. Come on, feet, inches, pounds, miles etc are commonly accepted and understood, so skip the metric.

I was raised in metric and kilos and boy was it a surprise to find one of the most advanced countries in the world comparing you to stones... or the butcher not knowing if I'm buying a pound of mince in money or weight (yeah people do buy £1 of mince round here).. luck has it that I can process directly in a "new language" without needing to convert every time. This is also helpful with languages. Know both systems and think imperial is outdated- not precise enough for the nano era...
