London

So I recently went shopping for shoes and my shopping was delivered while I was at work. I only knew it had arrived when my sister sent me a picture of how it had been left. It was a bag of 5 pairs of shoes under our front door mat with the hermes card saying: sorry I missed you I left your parcel (secure front porch was ticked) under mat.

Well done Hermes delivery man, no one will think to look there.

Anyone have any funny delivery stories?

One I had from MyHermes was 'The package you sent was over the weight you specified, so we will not deliver it until the outstanding balance (for the new weight range) has been paid. If you do not pay with 7 working days then the package will be disposed of'

Luckily for me, the winner on eBay had already thanked me for receiving the item!!

My best, it wasn't Hermes but I had a parcel randomly left at a shop the other side of town and NO card.

I only found out when I phoned the company how long my parcel would be and they said it had been delivered. Then they had to phone the parcel company to find out where they had left it

Bought a childs electric bike from Maplin for £80. We were on holiday when it was delivered and whoever delivered it left it on my doorstep. Unaware to us the neighbours took it in but we didnt see them for days and we phoned maplin to ask where it was and they said it was left in our porch. Funny, as we only have a doorstep. Definitely no porch. So they said we could collect another in store so we did. A few days later the neighbours bought the other one round. Phoned maplin to take it back and they said dont worry about it. Result!

A friend of mine works for DHL.

Even DHL staff know them as drop it, hide it, lose it.

Hermes are terrible - they just dump stuff on my doorstep, in view of the road, and never ask for a signature if I'm in.

Hermes have lost several parcels sent to me, and won't take any responsibility at all..

I think that they just hire anyone with a van and pay once per delivery, so the drivers just drop the stuff wherever they can.

They once lost an expensive parcel - an urgent car part - and their driver swore to the supplier that he'd left if in the conservatory at the back of my house. I haven't got a conservatory and neither has anyone else up my road...

I've had that too - I think a lot of these delivery staff are under severe contract terms. Though your goods getting offloaded into the bin truck isn't an ideal system.

I once had an item scheduled to be delivered to my work address, only for the delivery fail to show up!

When I queried it with the delivery company, they protested that their driver had made the drop at a specific time, and stuck to their guns, until, that is, I sent them a copy of our site CCTV images covering our site entrance and asked on the basis of the recordings, were they using invisible vehicles?

They checked up on the driver and found he was skiving off some sections of the route and spending time instead at home during the day!

I'm sure it's pretty simple to drop parcels back off at depot rather than leave them in plain view on a doorstep as well.

Ahhh, people so not being at home eradicates a delivery man's common sense.

Not a funny one but Hermes left a card to say they'd tried to deliver a parcel but there was nowhere secure so they'd try again. I spoke to someone on their video chat who when I said it wasn't for me, told me to ignore the card. Thing is there's a name and phone number to ring but no-one answers it. Parcel is act for my next door neighbour

I,ve had hermes and yodel with hermes you can follow their movements on line through A link they give you so delivery time Can more or less be guessed, but always be present during that period, If they don,t knock on the door thats very poor, And I (think) you can do the same with yodel, from what it told me on line about delivery time they were right within a day as anyone seen this facility, thou I think yodel caught me out once and left it over the gate, I should of left the porch door open.

Also another thing to look put for is with parcelforce.

Twice I have been tracking a delivery when it comes up delivered and signed for when it hasn't even been delivered. I've sent them a really sh***y email, then 2 hours later the postman knocks and delivers it. May not be a terrible thing to happen but when you go to check the proof of signature and its a random squiggle it really makes you angry.

I had that once too . Managed to block the bloke; he was in a tiny car; had no parcels in the car at all ; just a stack of " you were out " cards;

Reported to the trading people;

It seems that if they have a lot of deliveries ; they just send out a bloke to drop off the cards; so you then have to go to their depot to collect; saves them time and a van.

It must vary a lot by area, I've always found Hermes really good. On Monday I had something delivered by them that I'd only ordered on Saturday. Parcelforce are lousy here, late, damage etc, and every parcel is opened a little or holed. Worst ever was City Link, who were atrocious here in every way. I even walked into their warehouse one day (no staff at counter) to find they were all having a water fight among the parcels. But on a positive note, best ever job was by Amtrak- I bought a freshly refurbed set of car wheels and they delivered them unmarked despite the twat of a sender not packaging them at all and just sticking address labels on them.

Hermes deliver my Simply Be parcels to my work, never had an issue.

Yodel, on the other hand, are appalling. Last year I ordered a mask from eBay for a costume, it was part of an outfit for a convention I was attending. By two weeks before the con, I still hadn't received it so contacted the seller. All

I got was a tracking number so I had to go round the houses trying to find out which company it was, and eventually discovered it was Yodel.

They informed me the driver had left the parcel at my front door about 2 weeks prior. I asked if he meant my actual front door, or the front door of the building. They couldn't confirm, but they admitted liability straightaway.

The seller however was a complete wanker, kept telling me to ask my neighbours if they had it, offering to send another one instead of a refund (and I'd have to pay extra for them to send it special delivery!!!) but the event had passed so I didn't need it anymore. Eventually had to get eBay to force a refund.

Had Yodel not dumped it at their arse in the first place, I wouldn't have had weeks of hassle. Pricks.

Essex.

There are generally two types of driver for courier companies. The company driver, paid a fixed rate.

Secondly the local area courier, they are paid per delivered parcel. They are meant to try your door and one door either side. That means if you and your neighbours are out, the courier has tried 3 doors and returned to your door with a card. So that's 4 doors they have been to and not got paid. So if that happens for the 3 attempts they are supposed to do, they have been to 12 doors and writen 3 cards for nothing.

If the driver has 60 parcels a day, that's 240 doors they could have been to for nothing. They pay for their own vehicle and fuel out of the money they earn.

Why would a courier want to drive back to a depot to return a parcel incurring more fuel costs and lost time...

People expect free postage yet 1st class delivery.

Sports direct want signatures for every parcel. They wrap China mugs in a plastic page for gods sake...

I don't work for a courier company but know how it works...

Yes there are a lot of people who don't care, however a lot do but get treated like shit by the company and customers alike...

That doesn't make it ok to just dump the parcels in bins, chuck them over fences or just leave them on the doorstep where anyone can come along and take it. Their job is to deliver a parcel to a customer, they know that when they take the job on.

A few years ago I ordered some crockery. It was duly delivered by the courier who threw it over the back gate. Unfortunately the packaging didn't save it all. In fairness, there was nothing on it saying fragile and she was used to dropping of clothes that way. Since then the recycling bin is normally used.
