The vehicle is a 09 Citroen relay Lwb van

The part off eBay is around £180

Any advice welcome

Generally easier on a van as there's more room to wiggle the rack out without removing the subframe. Still a good few hours work though. Have a look and see if there's a refurb kit available for your rack, often its just a case of replacing the seals saving you tons of cash on the parts.

Hi Tom

Unfortunately they don't do replacement seals , however I have found a liquid that apparently seals any leaks looks similar to Rad weld but for steering racks !

Have you ever used anything similar ?

I think it's probably best just buying a complete new rack as the come with a 3 year guarantee

The mechanic I use is a friend so shouldn't rip me off but he's on about doing it on the floor as he doesn't have a garage

Not sure if the above is possible

Your thoughts ?

Thanks again

M

You can certainly give the liquid a go. If its the stuff made by Prestone then it will probably work, they even make stuff to fix blown head gaskets and it actually does a good job!

At least until you can get the vehicle to a mechanic at a convenient time.

I'll have a word with a few mates in the trade and see if there is a seal kit hiding away and not being sold to the public, there often is..

Would it not be worthwhile changing the track rod ends at the same time ? They have to come off if your replacing the rack anyway and it will need the tracking done too .

Only if they're worn, otherwise why bother.

Drain as much of the old fluid as possible out, and check if there's a filter built into the reservoir and change it too.

And beware of the type used to refill - a genuine BMW replacement ZF style res proudly stated CHF11S -

Unfortunately the system was older and used Dexron ATF. .......oops
