"I went deaf in one ear last year. Since then I've had horrendous tinnitus. It's not just a hiss but a roar along with beeps and bangs. At times very painful. I found the music and such like just didn't work. Now I have managed to get my head round it and can mostly ignore it but at times it drives me nuts. The thing I miss about being deaf? The silence as I am never awu from this infernal noise." I feel for you,its mental torture, minr is a very loud high pitch noise in my head 24/7 the silence is deafening and stressful

I can often hear my heart beat in my ear which is a form of it and it's annoying.

"i have it and yes from time to time i have long phases of it being so loud you wonder others cant hear it also - i started with it after taking fluoxetine many years ago - its a side effect but it never went away unfortunately - i put on background music if it troubles me - have tried apps like white music etc but im such a poor sleeper that extra noise tends to keep me awake more than the tinnitus - just have to keep trying coping mechanisms and see which work best for you " Sometimes mine is so loud i have bad thoughts but thats another story

"How did it happen? I can sympathise with you guys, I had it a few months but it was due to a build up of wax." I was struck down with an illness and it just destroyed all the gibbons in one ear. I also have balance problems...I tend to veer to one side when I walk. It's ruined my chances of getting on Strictly!

"Another sufferer here. 30 year's in building trade, large portions of that spent working at Heathrow airport by the runways. Construction noise and plane noise. Now just a constant high pitched tone in both ears along with a shushing noise. When it's quiet the noise can be deafening. Can't see it improving " Feeling your pain sir

"permanent high pitched noise for me, like something only dogs can hear lol. Learnt to ignore it mostly but sometimes it gets so loud that it's painful. Seems to happen more with certain noises, worse is if a baby is crying, that one really hurts, loud music is bad too, have to leave any pub or shop playing loud music. Feel sorry for all these people who walk around with headphone buds stuck down their ears pumping out music, they will regret it when the tinnitus kicks in " Certain high pitched noises can set mine off. I learnt to recognise the intro to a particular song recently so I could switch the radio off in time. And when films or tv use a feedback noise that can trigger mine or even change the pitch - the usual white noise hissy sound is fairly bearable.

"Has anyone heard of that treatment that matches the frequency and can "cure" the effects?" I've had it for around ten years now following a growth that messed up the little bones in my right ear. I now have a plastic bit in there to restore some of my hearing but have a constant humb and whistle now. I've was given a white noise generator to ware it's the size of an ear plug or the size of a small internal hearing aid. It makes a noise that mimics the tinnitus and all you need to do is have the noise generated louder than the tinnitus for around 16hours a day then when you turn it of the tinnitus is less noticeable. It takes a long time to program your head to make this work. But work it dose it reduced it down around 80%. But I'm a builder and keep triggering it off at work so for me the reasults are limited. Hope this helps.

I'm very similar on recognition of those sound triggers and then avoiding or altering the situation. The tv especially is a major hazard zone - though my central heating is another. The heating is a constant hum, as it's - I think - largely the pumping sound, not the boiler.

"Sorry to hear so many on here have this terrible condition, someone mentioned Earlier that listening to music with ear Buds connected for example mp3 player, could this set it off? if so I will not Wear mine again." It can arise from a number of causes, either within your ears or brain. One off noise or repeated experience can initiate it - one instance may be the straw that breaks the camels back. Once someone has it then they may be able to hear it all the time, or it may come and go. Hearing protection is important overall - once gone it's unlikely to return and this includes aiming to prevent tinnitus. Resting your ears is helpful, where you're subjected to potentially harmful noise. Avoiding damaging noises is good too. A lot of musicians take steps to limit further damage, following problems starting when they were younger. I used to love incredibly loud music - I don't have the luxury to be able to now, as it's too painful for me at the time and afterwards.

I was quite attached to my mp3 player what a Bind but I would rather play safe and Instead listen to my radio or speakers (low volume) If I,d known this to start with I would never entertained such hardware but I,m going to badly miss it for its quality of sound it took take you away from everyday sounds, thanks for the op bringing it up and your advice to.

I presume the headband and earphone will emit noise at a frequency that cancels the noise out. Thanks for the heads up excitement.

"Had a bit of a virus thingy. Now feel like right ear is stuffed with cotton wool and there is a horrible high pitched whine. Wonder if this is another step down the road to eventual deafness. This is horrible feeling. Used to work in mining industry and regularly encountered well over 100 Db sounds. Must have destroyed my ears. I did have a claim settled a couple of years ago and at the time the testing audiometrist asked me if I had tinnitus to which I replied I didn't think I had. But after the test and after I'd accepted the offer. I thought shit........ I have got ringing in my ears. It was almost as if my brain had not thought there was a problem and when he mentioned it I've been thinking about it ever since. Very worrying. As the OP says this is not a nice feeling at all. " The tubes leading to your ear is blocked due to the virus, it's usually blocked with fluid that hasn't drained as yet. Take some decongestant tablets. It takes time for all the fluid to drain then the noise should stop. My ears are just starting to clear now and slowly the noise is going.

"I'm 36 and have suffered since birth. I'm pretty much deaf in my right ear and it's that side that I hear the ringing and rushing noises and a whole heap of other sounds. After 36 years I'm pretty used to it now. I generally notice it more when it's really quiet and it can annoy me if I'm tired or stressed about something. I try my best not to let it get to me but if my guard is down, if I'm upset or worried about something else then it can be very distressing. I've never tried any kind of relaxation techniques, I might have to research this as it could help when I'm feeling particularly low. " Its a catch22 situation the noise stresses you out and sress makes it worse i just cant win

I have a VERY loud high pitched continuous noise in my head 24/7,mental torture my friend mental fuckin torture" My heart goes out to you. I don't know how I will manage if this goes louder. My home is really quite. No traffic sounds etc. As I sit of a night, it sounds like there's a valve distant height pitched tone. The only way I can suscribe is when a radiator valve isn't closed properly. This has lead to insomnia. If I wake in the night, it's impossible for me to get my head down again as the sound is too distracting. I also think it explains why I keep so busy doing things in the day.

"I was told to "make the noise my friend" because I'm lumbered with it for the rest of my life. Constantly "popping" my ears which can't be good for them but gives slight relief in a strange way. Now I have to keep our tv on all night to try drown out the ringing/hissing but I'm living ok with it at the moment. Hope the Op is ok and found some sort of relief, serious tinnitus can cause dreadful reactions in the long run Mr T " Distraction is important. I just wish I had a missus like yours to take my mind off it . Sorry, I shouldn't make crap comments. I do know exactly where you are coming from with this.
