Sometimes people on here use the word 'play' when they're talking about sexual stuff. They call it 'play'.

Am I alone in thinking that doesn't sound right? Kids play. Whenever someone says 'play' in a sexual context it makes them sound like a kid and it has a turn off reaction for me..

^ This.

"Play" is used in all kinds of contexts. We "play" musical instruments.

It's like if you complained that it's weird cos it's too musical.

Kids also "scrap". But no one complains that "scrap paper" is too childish.

The English language is a versatile and diverse thing.

Play, to me, describes more than just straight sex. I tend to do a lot of fetish 'play'. Sometimes it includes penetrative sex, sometimes not. It varies.

So yes, I see it as play.

Children play, certainly, but adults also play.

In fact I'm watching grown men chasing a funny shaped ball, playing, at the moment. Nobody would mistake them for children. At least not on the field, in the bar afterwards might be a different matter entirely.

You're right.

But when kids play, they're not playing rugby either.

What's your point?

It's like if you said "Oooh, guys, y'know, I don't like that we say "sexy knickers", cos, y'know, kids wear knickers too... "

Lol

I use it...... Adult games ..... X

It's not child's play as we are all adults ....that is already established.

What is meant by the word "play"

Fun jest sport - provides amusement ... Arouses laughter and sex can certainly do that !!!

When someone says play an instrument do you think the same ??

Play a sport?

Play a game?

Sex is made up of Manoeuvers is it not?

To play is to be amorous .... it is used to flirt ......it is a dalliance ......it as a recreational activity AND there is the absence of serious intent by NSA ....

I understand your connotation of the word yet it is out of context within the environment as we are adults.

Even using the words "role play"

Can make sex easier or more fun for some ....

It's how we understand the meaning of the word and the environment ....

I LIVE AND LOVE TO PLAY XX

Some people keep bringing up 'playing' sports. We're not talking sports we're talking sexual things that kids don't do.

To the guy who mentioned rugby and not seeing kids play rugby. They played rugby when I was at school. Again rugby isn't a sexual activity it's a sport.

It's not something I'll lose sleep over lol I just think it sound too child-like to be attractive for me.

But you saying it's "childlike" shows you're only focusing on one aspect of its meaning. Why that particular meaning?

And why do you not also think that getting "dirty" when meaning sex is problematic, when kids get dirty too?

It seems you're picking one word, and choosing to focus on one contextual meaning, for no specific reason.

Then by your own theory, it's not childish because it's something children don't do.

If I say 'sex' that means something reasonably specific, which might not actually describe well what might happen.

Kinky play is a better description.

I didn't pick the word or the context. The word within and context picked me

It might be because I've not seen it used that way anywhere else except on here and another fetish social site so it stands out more. 'Dirty' I had heard of plenty of times in a sexual context so doesn't bother me.

But when other uses of the word play have been mentioned, you've said you don't consider it childish when it's something children don't do.

By that reasoning, sexual play isn't childish because children don't do it.

Do you want to address my point that the word can be used to describe sexual sessions that aren't necessarily well described by the term "sex"?

Nope. It's not something that bothers me too much. That sounds different when someone says 'playing with myself'. That doesn't effect me.

I think it's a sub-conscious association thing and the fact I hadn't heard it before using this site and the other one which is quite recent.

"girl" has much fewer non-child-like meanings than "play". But you decide to hone in on the one contextual definition of "play" as being childlike, but "girl" doesn't strike you as problematically childlike.

Makes sense.

I don't use girl often and I used Gal not girl. Again it's within context.

Using play in a sexual context is completely fine but not something I find attractive.

Play is quite common with kink. I always use play but then try to modify it when on swinging scene.

Got no issue with the word and will quite often say 'Let's play' or 'Play with me please.' And that can mean anything from fet stuff to sex.

Woah, let's not start with the accusations of misunderstanding. My understanding of the English language is perfectly fine thank you. Maybe it's time to take some responsibility for the words that you type.

The entirety of your efforts and attitude so far does not suggest you think it's OK to say. In fact, you've said it "doesn't sound right", that it's a "turn off", and the fact that you so persistently try to prove your point suggests that you do not think it's OK at all.

I quite like the term play in relation to swinging. It describes swinging sex perfectly for me; play, just fooling, messing around, unimportant, the opposite of deep, meaningful, loving sex.

It's a widely used term in the swinging scene too, ie playrooms in clubs. It also sounds much more pleasant and easier to ask someone if they want to play, rather than say shall we go and have sex which sounds too blunt.

"I understand where you are coming from OP. When I first heard the term 'play' it did weird me out a little. But over time I got used to the term and now I use the word without any weirdness at all. I really like it.

A x"

I didn't get weirded out but I was a bit at first. With that and "meet" which in my youth was slang for a bit of snogging behind the sports hall

Every hobby has words or sayings which make sense in context but which outsiders may find odd/amusing.. I often find myself asking if someone fancies a blow in my other hobby
