Are there songs that you think should be banned/avoided because of their content?

I'm not talking about one's with swear words in but songs like Delilah which is about domestic violence (he kills her) and which an MP is calling to be banned at rugby matches.

What about songs like Every Breath You Take or The Man Who Can't Be Moved which are basically stalking?

Perhaps not censored, but surely we all make decisions about what is appropriate to certain situations. Is a song about a man who has violently killed his lover and blames her for it appropriate in a rugby stadium?

Unless a song is actively encouraging people to do something horrendous, then it just telling a story.

Do you ACTUALLY care about this? It seems trivial to me. I also can't think of anyone that considers domestic violence glamourised because of the song Delilah.

Also, the violence on the pitch may be worse than the imaginary violence in the words of a song.

No I don't. It's an interpretation of lyrics. Their not promoting anything.

Where would you draw the line. Some lyrics are very emotive people relate to them for all kinds of reasons. Do!we ban every song connected to domestic violence, suicide, murder. I can think of one popular 60s song that relates to underage sex.

Also I'm not sure when some of the songs where written but we might see things differently now to when the song was written.

I'm curious about people's opinions. And also for any other well known songs that we all blithely sing along to without really knowing the meaning.

The hoohah has been started by an MP so it's possibly just his attention seeking under the guise of social responsibility. I'm curious to know if people really care. And yes, I may be playing devils advocate but it's a forum, that's the way it works.

Can I just add that Sting openly said the song was about stalking. The band were ven concerned about putting it out but decided to as it was a song highlighting the problem of stalking. It does not 'promote' it at all. Music is art and like all art it is created by people who interpret events and situations for us. Its up to us whether we listen.

Bohemian Rhapsody is about a man who kills another man and is going to be put to death for it, yet it constantly gets voted the best song ever etc etc.

A lot of songs have (not so) hidden messages. I just listen to music for music's sake.

Books , magazines, soap operas, plays.. all carry the same message.

HOWEVER.... A sport should pick a song that connects with their team or sport or sommat more fitting.

There ate loads if things that are a bit off by today standards. Romeo and Juliet, gang violence and suicide, lolita where Jeremy irons is basically behaving like a 70s tv presenter.

I've been for a remindey peek at the lyrics.

1) He's a peeping Tom.

2) He's posessive.

3) She's a cheater.

4) He went mental so can we blame him?

5) He admits she was a bad egg

6) He says he was enslaved.

7) He let the bloke drive off and didn't challenge him ... fkn coward.

8) She laughed at him so is guilty of goading.

9) If he had a knife was it premeditated ?

10 ) He does ask for forgiveness.. and indicates that his patience had reached it's upper limits.

11) Who called the 'they that is going to break down the door?'

It's a GREAT song.

Has a great moral lesson in there

I agree with some of that, in this case all I see is the welsh rugby team picking an iconic song by an iconic welsh singer.

I was just about to type maybe they should of chosen green green grass of home, then remembered it was aboit a murderer on death row.

No... but I doubt they are singing it because of the lyrical content.

Shit happens in life. At least 2 women were killed this week by their ex husbands. I don't think they were singing Delilah as they were stabbing away. I could be wrong though.
