No right to privacy on work PCs

I read that the EU Court has agreed that employers are allowed to read any messages or emails that are sent on works time. Comes from a Romanian engineer who was using a chat messenger type program.

Surely people don't do personal stuff in the boss' time do they?

I browse the internet at my leisure occasionally on my lunch break (and I don't really care if they snoop that) but otherwise no.

I only use my own phone to look at anything personal.

I saw an alarming statistic once about the number of people who watch porn on work computers, though

it was common on construction sites in berlin in the 90's for blokes to nick off to the toilet for half an hours wanking.

it was pretty standard to earn at least £80 a week from wanking after tax.

If I need something scanning and emailing I'll do it in works time, I feel like they owe me

I've worked with people who got annoyed because the boss stayed in the office and they couldn't do their banking/ebay/amazon order etc so yes, people do personal stuff in the bosses time.

You get a salary!

People should also be careful of social media and things like WhatsApp. Don't assume what you say in your time your employer can't hold it against you either.

We're allowed to bro use the Internet at work during breaks, although I wouldn't do my banking on it and would never attempt to log on the FS, not that it would let. They have software which is meant to prevent anybody accessing porn or inappropriate websites. I only use my phone for FS when at work.

I can't believe anybody would be daft enough to try using a works computer for anything personal and I know of a couple of people who have been sacked for accessing porn sites on their works laptops xx

going back over 10 years ago we had to archive all company computer communications, all email, websites, forum posts. It's been pretty standard in the corporate world to keep them in case they are needed as evidence.

Access requests were pretty rare, but they did happen, later on scanning the archives for specific website access became a job for many.

Nothing new here except some chancer attempted a right to privacy case.

As an employer could be held liable for anything done using their equipment, of course they want to be able to check how that equipment is being used.

And yes, a lot of people use company equipment for personal use during work time.

Oh most definitely they do especially the customer service and contact centre, far too busy booking their holidays and shopping to help other teams. And yes everyone knew but nothing was done about it

I wonder would they expect that they could have mail or parcels delivered to them at work without their employer wanting to know what they were using their address for and what was being delivered?

Some companies allow parcels to be delivered to work as it's an easy way to keep staff morale up. The practicality of it does depend on the kind of workplace though.

As for using work equipment for personal use I'd always be cautious and circumspect - some places I've worked it's not acceptable to even carry your phone on you whilst working.

Same here, I don't use the work computer or laptop or wifi network for anything that's not work related.

I work for a tech company. The boss is very techy, we know that if we want to look at something rude / riskA that we drop off the wifi and look on 3G... He has the power easily to look at whatever we're looking at and has proved it, we can browse the web though it's just a case of moderation

The replies here have been very considered. I do know of people who would think that a boss having the right to examine their works PC would be a violation of their human rights and get very aerated about it.

Some of the IT savvy contributors have made it pretty clear that its easy for the management to access PCs -presumably over the works network?

It doesn't have to be done over the network though a lot of monitoring is done that way.

The computer belongs to the company so the boss can take it away and have IT look at it in person at any point they like.

Whether or not anyone feels it is a violation of their privacy, the law does not agree.

If a company owns a piece of equipment, they dictate how it may be used and they can take it away or inspect it at any time they choose.
