Windows 10 auto updating

Just read a report that Win10 is now set to download automatically as part of you security updates. I expect we all have security updates set to automatic and if you click OK on this, not cancel. Win10 will then download.

Be careful and read what you click to accept in the future on your machines if you dont want to update with the new operating system. The report is in the Guardian technology page.

Personally I think the report could be the Guardian scaremongering as the Windows 10 "upgrade" is a 3 GB download (at least) which could incur costs to the consumer if that pushes them over their monthly download limit. Surely Microsoft aren't daft enough to change the operating system consumers have paid for without asking them first?!

I hadn't done updates on my desktop for two years so I downloaded and installed 160+ the other week on a Win7 PC and now there's a "Get Windows 10" icon in my task bar that won't go away unless I kill the process. I always have my updates set to "Check for updates and let me choose whether to download them". At least that way I control what and when it does them.

Fair point. As I have mine set to update whatever upgrades the OS needs I am of the mind that I don't want to compromise the security of the PC or better performance / looks.

I think the article is warning people that they could, if they do click OK, be accepting the download, and therefore changes? Either way if Microsoft are, it's a bit sneaky

Microsoft are indeed very sneaky and they're actively trying to get as many consumers to upgrade to Win10 as quickly as possible as they want to phase out updates/support for previous operating systems which is why, amongst numerous other reasons, they're giving it away for free at the moment with the usual "limited time offer" encouragement/bribe. Personally I would want to know whether my PC/laptop hardware is able to support Win10 and still run reliably and quickly before I'd consider it.

On the subject of automatic upgrades, I've seen and had to unpick many upgrades released into the wild that have had severe detriment to the hardware, software and even the operating system due to Microsoft rushing to fix issues with previous iterations of alleged upgrades to their products

I agree. It took ages to download on my laptop, nothing looks any different just harder to find things and worse of all the laptop takes ages to start now

I went from windows 7 to windows 10 and its the best one yet, IMO..

I also like the automatic updating, it usually occurs when I am about to switch off my laptop at night so doesn't affect my usage...

It won't even show the win icon in bottom right of screen.

Most modern lappys/pc's will meets these requirements I'd say. I even have one pc that is nearly 10 years old ... and is currently getting the pop up

According to Microsoft the minimum hardware requirements are 1 Ghz processor, 1 GB RAM and a screen resolution of 800x600 amongst other things. I can only imagine how slow and unrealiable it would be on a desktop/laptop with those specs!

I've loved Windows 10, it's been great on a few machines I've used. Generally, once installed, it will get a monthly update.

It's more secure than older systems.

There've been a lot of threads since July 2015, on installing it.

I think I have had this but it does ask before it installs. I started to install or download it once by mistake and luckily was there to cancel it midway through. I hate Windows 10, I want to stick with 7 as long as possible!!!

This is a new (6 mths or so old) when I bought it I bought a windows 10 licence and got a full installation disk with it. I am running windows 10 and have no problems. I have also installed it (upgrade from win 7 pro and win 8 on a number of machines and they have had no problems either.

However I also know many people who have downloaded the win 10 upgrade and have a totally different experience. I suspect that this may be down to attacks on the download data streams rather than the OS.

Just my thoughts...

But everyone needs to remember to turn off the data mining features of win 10. To do this properly you need to go to this page:

DO NOT DOWNLOAD TOOLS!

SCROLL DOWN TO: Turn Off Everything In Privacy Settings

Now do everything you are instructed to from that point on.

Regularly check to make sure that Microsoft have not reset your machine to its default settings when installing updates. (They are sneaky like that).

Windows 7 is by far best one at the min. However my laptop died n replaced it with the new one. Came with Windows 10. Although I Dont like it that much, I refused to get one when 8.1 was out, and 10 is much better than that c**p.

I also refuse to go apple too

A reminder window kept coming up on one of the computers at work, I just keep closing it, but Friday a came in and it had been downloaded and installed waiting for me to prompt the customiser, I didn't agree to their terms so it uninstalled itself and went back to Windows seven, jusst letting you know. Hate the Windows platform, just awful.

Don't download 10 had rubbish with it after while it kept saying critical error try fit it but it wouldn't but do say on Google problem with it so I reset back to my window 8 also finding thing oj window 10 nite mare .I loaded win 10 about year ago so now won't go back stay with win 8.

I had problem with it loads have on Microsoft says in Google think if comes with upgrade 10 ok but dam pain in end for me.

Just download Win10, configure it to how you like it and you will find you like it after getting used to it

Adjust your privacy settings as you wish.

It's a definite step-up from Win 7, which was great. If I'd got a pc eligible for a free upgrade I'd be getting it, before the deadline in a few weeks.

If you are going to get windows 10, go for a clean install rather than update. Far less problems I found.

If you want to avoid the updates altogether you can get registry hacks to disable the auto update messages. For Windows 7 or 8.

I bought s new disk, installed Windows 7 then upgraded to 10. Deleted the Windows.old folder using disk cleanup.

You can stop most auto updates by setting your wifi connection to metered. You can't stop security updates.

I stop the Windows update service so I can decide when to do non-security updates. I hate not being able to choose when to do updates

i had a screen popup last week saying it was going to auto update to w10 i had to cancel manually to stop it i think its coz so many have rejected it they are trying to push it my daughter installed it as soon as it first came out and lost her use of keyboard and went back to w8

Absolutely not, it's a horrible system with a poor apology for a mail programme.

Why should I have to relearn a new format of Windows when I'm happy with my Windows 7. The more modern the Windows system the harder it is to get to the workings, they just hide things. There is no gain for me to change, and many drawbacks.

I removed the Windows update for Windows Ten and changed my updates to ask from automatic.

Got a new PC in March with win 10. Till now it's been fast and faultless. !! Packed with some great features. Brilliant. Prior to that I was using XP which was also very good. But my poor old HP died on me. .

its best to upgrade, windows 10 is the best since 7, so the next windows will be rubbish. ms has said the upgrade offer for free is going to expire soon, so best you get your upgrade before its too late
