Getting inked... ouch!

Well the time has come to get my tat re coloured, gonna be a bit of pain but the right colour after a few years of it being wrong.

Any tips on how to get through the pain? Should only take about an hour so they told me, but there's needles involved!!!!

Distraction techniques. Think of a girls name beginning with every letterbox the alphabet. Then boys names. Place names etc......

If you keep your brain thinking about stuff it helps to block pain pathway.

Well I will have my tablet with me, don't think going on fab whilst it's being done can take my mind off things though haha

Maybe take some music to chill out to whilst it's being done may help a bit if I can zone out

Man up.

The way I see it, you're not just paying for the ink and the tattoist's time and shop's overheads... You're paying for the waiting, the pain, people's reactions, and all the other stuff that comes with a tattoo... So why would you want to short change yourself by not experiencing it to the max.

I'm a bit of a pain weirdo, though, so I can understand it's not everyone's cup of tea. In which case, let me refer you back to my first point.

Two Nurofen - and Nickelback nice and loud on my headphones (to drown out the needle noise!) worked a treat for me....singing in my head was also a good distraction

I've got a full back piece and half sleeves and feet done....hours and hours of work. Man up! Arms hurt less than most places and I've had under my arm by the pit done. Feet hurt like a bitch and they had to be done 3 times cos the color kept coming out.

I'd say stick your earphones in and zone out cos yeah tattoos hurt.

Will look good though...no pain no gain x

If your a fanny get hush!! Stuffs the best on the market but you really should just man up!! I've had about 65 hours done including my armpit, colouring doesn't hurt it's the outline that nips a bit, depending where your getting done of course

Apart from my eyelids (fucking OUCH) my foot tattoo was by far the most painful. And i've had it done 3 times.

I've the whole inside of my bicep done, the outline nipped a little but colouring didn't, Base of my back, ribs were a little worse but by far the worst place was my armpit, every one has a different pain threshold

Research suggests that pain is in part psychological.

If you believe it's going to be really painful, it will be. If you believe it won't be too bad and you'll deal with it ok, it will be easier.

Your subconscious is quite easy to con.

Not with hush, my chum used it, it healed absolutely perfect, I've heard the other ones can do that especially the one you get from the doctors and it wipes off after 5 mins

The following quotes are from an article, ("How Expectations Shape Pain") in Neuroscience Letters in 2012.

"Pain is highly modifiable by psychological factors, including expectations."

"Pain often refers to a sensory experience resulting from actual damage to the body. However, pain is also highly subjective, and

can occur even in the absence of physical harm. As such, pain can be influenced by a number of psychological factors, including attention, emotion, and beliefs or expectations."

There's plenty of research material on the subject.

If you expect it to hurt, it will. If you expect it to be ok, it will be easier.

At the moment you are guaranteeing it will hurt by expecting that it will.

I have seen a tattoo artist rub "numbing cream" on a screaming client, to help get her through to the end of her session. When he started again she was able to tolerate the pain. What the tattooist had actually used was soap solution.

If I'm in hospital and need to have a cannula put in, or even a blood gass test then I need someone to hold onto.... tightly!

I have to have control over where my blood is taken and where to site a cannula, I also apologise for the noise I make and tell them to ignore me.

My phobia of slugs is currently making me shudder at the thought of writing this, stops me from going out at night if there is a hint of one of them around and helped me move from a house to a flat.

Most people I know are like that with blood gasses, those things fucking hurt but it's still not a phobia, rather a normal reaction to something incredibly painful. The phobia of it would probably prevent you from walking over the threshold of the hospital.

As for holding you down, that's dangerous for you and the people doing it. If you can fight whilst having blood gasses done, you probably don't need them!

To be fair, as a teen, before I got over the needle thing, I fought like some kind of demon when I had to have blood gases done. I'd had a doctor called to me at home, he nebulised me and sent me to hospital as an emergency. Blue lights, the lot.

I was by myself. They'd called my mum but she had to come from work and my dad had to stay with my brother and I was bordering on panic already when I got to the hospital. A doctor tried to take the blood for the blood gases and you know what a lot of doctors are like taking blood, right? After two failed attempts, I lost it on the third.

My mum arrived just in time to hear me screaming as she walked into the corridor leading to the ward. They wouldn't let her in to calm me down. I had to be held down too. I'd have used my last gasp of air to get away if I could have.

And yes, I did need the gases done. I was in hospital for two weeks.

Tattooist are not aloud to apply any numbing creams etc that's up to you what you use beforehand, but a lot of tattooist's don't like the creams because it affects the tattoo outcome. Recolouring does hurt more because you are going overvscar tissue but no pain no gain, you want it so focus on other things and get it over and done with. Xx

I still consider mine a phobia. There are probably people who have worse phobias, but mine was irrational in some ways. And too extreme to be simple fear. It wasn't just blood gases that were the problem.

Im not over it ay all... om so maybe not a phobia as you know it, , but given the choice of a needle or a nebuliser, the latter is definitely my option.

Having had needles rammed into me from a very early age, and a cannula cut off and plastic left IN MY ARM then I believe I have a phobia of PEOPLE with needles!

This tattoo lark is different cos I will never see the needle, and it's not injecting any horrible drug into me.

And this is making things better is it hmmmmmm. so how them stress levels after all this talking about it going up or down or should I have a guess. Look I'm honestly not trying to make things worse for you your doing quite well at that all on your own. At the end of the day you have to really want this and if you want it bad enough then a little bit of pain is just a small price to pay to get what you want and that's it there's nothing more to be said. If you don't want it bad enough then just do yourself a favour and walk away. £60 is penny's and just consider it a lesson learnt it not worth the agro............. or is it only you know that

I only have the one, and that's getting re done properly, it was done by a friends brother who was training before, its on my upper arm.

He let me take as long as I needed, fag break whenever the pain got too bad etc.... can't do that in a professional shop though.

I only have the one, and that's getting re done properly, it was done by a friends brother who was training before, its on my upper arm.

He let me take as long as I needed, fag break whenever the pain got too bad etc.... can't do that in a professional shop though. "

Drinking one or two just before a session won't thin the blood enough to cause a problem. A skinful of drinks the night before will have more of an effect.

Caffeine thins the blood too apparently. So it will have the same effect on colour etc as alcohol.

Away with the fairies (Liverpool to you)

I don't use it myself because I am a girl and therefore hard and can get tattooed without crying but you can get Emla cream from the pharmacy....you rub it in an hour before and wrap the area with cling film and it numbs the area for a couple of hours....they use it on kids before injections and adults before laser treatment

Tattoos hurt, there's not much you can do it avoid it.

Eat and take a sugary drink

Try sit or lie as comfortably as possible

I've found this works best for me

Take a bottle of lucozade

Lie down where possible or sit in a relaxed position

Don't talk too much, let the artist concentrate

Have something distract you, music, play on your phone etc.

I think I read something further up about more needles used for shading, that hurts less. Now single needle work really does hurt!

There's a lot of single needle work at the top of my arm and the only advice I can offer for it is just grit your teeth and Bear it.

hiding from cock pics.

It's 9:25pm my tattooist finished on me at 5:10pm after 3 and a half hours. It was really painful.

I've had a few tattoos but this was the most painful but I absolutely love it.

It's not finished my next session is booked for 3 weeks to finish it off.

I don't know how I got through to be honest, but I did somehow, and I'm so glad I did.

I have a design I really want but the thing is.

I don't want to be thought of as only having it as part of a mid life crisis.

But I have had this design in mind for about ten years.

Never been brave enough to go thru with it.

I can't decide to go the whole hog and have it done on my back it would cover entire back.

Or on my upper arm/shoulder.

It's quite a sinister looking demon /devil creature.

No colour just black line.
