It was stolen from a city centre once. When the police said to me does it have any distinguishing marks I said . yeah the bonnet is held on with a leather belt n buckles...

I didn't bat an eyelid .... normal to me.

Worst was a yellow ford fiesta,

best

Fiat multipla 1.9jtd

Its as ugly as fuck but what a versatile car 6 proper adult seats loads of space, and leg room

loads of luggage space when seats removed, very economical, in three years 120,000 miles only broke down once and that was 2 months after buying it, never missed a heart beat since.

Years ago we had a ford that the starter motor used to jam on. After watching hubby it was no problem. I'd get the shopping in the car, try to start it and if it didn't start , open the bonnet , drop a short handled mallet on it , stand on the door sill and rock the car side to side , get in and drive off.. that's normal too innit.

All new cars are now designed to last no more than 5 years if you are very lucky. I see evidence of this day in and day out. the worse culprit of this are the french by a country mile. i could go on about this all day but I wont bore you all.

worst car I had was a bright orange VW TA fastback. I was never done doing body repairs and the engine had to be dropped when the exhaust needed changed. Only thing holding it together was the airflow over it.

Car I most enjoyed driving was my little Mazda MX5.

Started with a Ford Orion... good car.

Next was a Rover S 1.6 .... good car.

Then I had an Astra Estate 1.6 ... good car.

Then it was a Cavalier 1.6... good car, even managed to drive it home after a crash which smashed the radiator.

And now got a Vectra 1.8 Artic, very good car.

Guess I have just been very lucky, I just put petrol in them and go.

My first car was a Mini Cooper 1.6i in BRG, had her for 6 years from new, reliable until the 6th year; then I traded her in for my second and current car which is a MINI Cooper with a custom paint job, and I have had her from new for 9 years. She had been reliable until about 2-3 years ago, has had most of her major parts replaced due to old age, and she is still going strong, and I love her to bits!

My first car was a Mini... it was ace! Souped up and you could chuck it round corners, it really was a brill car.

Then I had a Peugeot 205... that was a brilliant car too. I had it 10 years and it never let me down. Eventually I swapped it for a keyring cause it was going to cost too much to get it through the MOT and it would have been embarrassing to sell it.

My next car was Gonzo the green VW Golf. He rocked! I had him about 8 years and then flogged him on ebay cause the scrappy was gonna make me pay to put him down. I've since seen him all sparkley and being loved and cared for. That made me happy.

Now I have another VW Golf... he doesn't have a name. He goes fast and has a really good sound system!

So no... I've never had a bad car either!

Crappiest was a Renault Laguna 1.9 Initiali... Tons of toys but most of em rarely worked! False readings from the tyre monitors, Sat Nav showed us in two different places by jumping backwards and forwards along the road we were on... Plus tons more problems..

Finally the engine went (head and big ends on a diesel!! ) so after 6 months and over £3500 we traded it in for a BMW 3 series 3ltr diesel. (Yes, I'm bragging!!! ) and as it happens, for many reasons that was the best car we had!

Actually, we had the Mk4 in brown with a vynyl roof and 2 door! It was only 1300cc and hardly moved. The journey from Rushden to Bishops Stortford where me parents lived never even got the heater working! Way to overcooled..

Stuck a 2ltr lump in it with a 1600 gearbox but left the 1300 diff... Went like stink up to about 65mph and ran out of steam lol...

Our best and worst car was one and the same!

The beautiful Mazda MX5

It was sexy and cool... If was fast it was fun to drive, responsive, well made... The engineering was good.

BUT

Couldn't get any luggage in it. A weekend away needed major planning.

and as for trips to B+Q/homebase or any shopping

A light rear wheel drive car in the lightest of snow/ice it wanted to go every where SIDEWAYS...

The ONLY car that we ever that had to be abandoned in cold weather. (stopped by just 3 inches of snow in the street round the corner)

It broke our hearts to realise it just wasn't practical.

Apart from the Maz.....

There is also a very soft spot here for a car from 20 years ago - a Skoda Estelle - after three old bangers that were always breaking down, t

he 2nd hand Skoda was TOTALLY reliable -went like a stabbed rat ( for its size) had a lovely eccentric side with the rear engine....

Will never hear a thing said against a Skoda

My dream car that i am lucky to own is a 2008 Ford Mustang GTCS V8 California special. (only comes out in the sun)

ooh yes now just remembered another much loved vehicle!!!!

No that is wrong...

wouldn't have it back (unlike the Estelle) but still have warm thoughts about it.

Mrs Shagadelic changed jobs and her new job brought a car with it. The way the prices were (change of reg etc,) it made sense to sell our old car there and then but we had to wait 6 weeks for the lease car... So we needed a car to "fill" for 6 weeks.

Went into this grubby 2nd hand dealer and said want something "that will last for just 6 weeks or 1000 miles". That's all.

For £200 we came away with a 17 yr old 2.2 litre 6 cylinder Austin Princess in Brown (naturally) with vinyl roof!

What a car!

What style! You couldn't help but hum the Sweeney theme tune as you went along.

Our daughter (18 -only just passed test) was stopped by the police every time she took it out just to look at the vehicle.)

The dealer was true to his word it gave absolutely no trouble for that six weeks.

The new VW Golf lease car arrived (terrific engineers the germans - a great car)

Daughter took the princess out that weekend one last time - and backed it into a very solid lampost. The dent is still there to this day.

Not worth repairing... It was as if the car knew its time was done.

Worst car - not owned but had for a week in US Chevrolet Aveo. Read end was breaking away on off-ramps at 30mph

1st car Austin A40-no I am not that old, car was 30 back in the early 1990's. Great car for tinkering and fixing yourself.

2nd car Fiat Cinquecento - my god how small, but fun to drive, 120,000 miles in 7 years. Would break but invariably still be driveable.

Fiat Punto - automatic with four adults and made it up Rosedale Chimney.

Fiat Multipla - great for space.

VW Golf - loved it, only a 1.6 but could leave boy racers behind.

Audi A3 Sportback - wasn't sure, but spent a week on Holiday in North Wales and loved it ever since. Diesel so still cheap to run, and only £30 tax.

Worst was without doubt a montego estate. What a bag of shite. Cylinder head went 3 times in the garentee period (6 months) brakes went, and it kept getting clipped in car parks. Ended it's days stuffed into a lamppost because the steering failed (fortunately low speed impact)

Most reliable car was an FSO saloon (polish copy of a Lada which was a copy of a Fiat). Bought it for £30 and apart from that (fuel, tax insurance excepted) never spent a penny on it in 5 years. Didn't even change the oil and it NEVER broke down. Eventually a small rust hole in the wing caused an MOT fail. Sold it for £50 to a guy who wanted it for spares.

Best car was/is a Land Rover. Just brings a smile to my face when I drive it. Sure it has broken down but it has always got me home and has never needed recovering in 7 years of ownership. It is nearly 20 years old now as well.

To be honest, any car brand can be reliable or unreliable depending on how it's treated.

I have a 7 year old land rover freelander van, we all know what a reputation they have for reliability...or lack off... Well, after doing 113,000 miles it's only ever needed wear and tear items (including a clutch).

It's got nothing fancy on it, very basic, not very quick, rolls round corners as high and skinny tyres but its one of the best motors I have had.

Also love my Skoda, yes a Skoda... Have a diesel vRS, been reliable, it's fast, comfortable, and can still do 50+mpg

Worst car.... Hmmm, not had that many but would probably be a brand new Clio I bought in 1997, as soon as the warranty was up after a year it was nothing but trouble. Only small things going wrong but as parts were so expensive turned small problems into expensive repairs.

S.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

My worst car was a 1964 Vauxhall FB Victor. Suspension was too soft and the brakes used to fade terribly. I put some better front brakes off a later version and some helper springs on the back which stiffened it up a bit. It even handeled a bit better after I put a set of alloy wheels on it. But it would go through gear boxes and gear levers and the crankshaft went in the engine.

My best cars have all been grown-up`s Meccano Sets AKA Land Rovers! My old Series 2A came to me with 250.000 miles on the clock and must have done another 100.000 on the original engine. I`ll forgive it for the numerous V8`s I put in it and blew up afterwards. It`s still in the garden, as is my `82 Range Rover. It`s another mega mileage original engine car although I went through a few transfer boxes, mainly because I refused to believe the old Land Rover saying of "if it`s stopped leaking oil, start worrying!"

Currently running a `94 Discovery ES diesel.

I think what you really mean is that the accountants have the final say on the build costs of a car....

I have found that the cars that I have purchased myself in the last decade have been massively more reliable and better to drive than cars I owned before that.

At the end of the day that's all that matters to me as a motorist.

Never had one but the Citreon 2cv is most definately at the top of my all time hate list...absolute pointless piece of junk..0-60...30 seconds!!!...the inside looked like one of those blue things that invalids used to drive..

They always seemed to have dented wings, a 'nuclear power no thanks' sticker in the window and a ton of rust...

People used to say they were 'fun'...fun?...driving around in a four wheel souped up multi coloured cripple mobile?

Well renault must have good accountants..as they are one of the few people that still seem to remember that people want to have fun and drive cars..

the new williams clio and the Twingo GT are fantastically fun little cars.. as is the megane 250..

btw I dont own any of the above.. I just go and test drive most cars as they come out.. :D

all new cars are very nice to drive, drive one after it has covered 1000s of miles, 80% of our work is french. the quality of the components they use within the build. I.e the parts you dont see are so sub standard it is not true. French cars keep me in work so for that reason alone I say keep the good work up chaps.

Yeah, I was going to say that people are seduced into buy French cars because they have gadgets or are fast". What we have noticed it that after 3 years you may as well be driving an old banger!

It is all very well buying a car because it looks good and is reletively cheap, but at trade in time it can really hurt

As for cars being made whilst listening to the tune of the Accountants fiddle, I have a nearly three year old car that we have had from almost new and it is still as good today as it was when be bought it. It still drives just as well as a new one (test drive yesterday )

It just depends what you buy.

When weren't mass produced cars designed with profit in mind?

True the manufacturer has to balance cheapness of components etc against the damage a reputation forunreliability will do to your sales - but the "accounants" have always had their say.

Apparently when the mini was first launched in the 1960s Leyland sold them very cheaply- around £800

Ford couldn't work out how they did it.

So Ford bought a mini , took it to bits and their "accountants" costed every last nut and bolt every bit of the car and worked out what it would cost to build that there was no way Leyland could not be losing any LESS than £200 per car...

Leyland no longer make cars.

Most hated cars?

A toss-up between;

1: A frankly terrifying baby-shit brown Morris Marina, in which not only was the the engine tied to the frame with rope, but it had no headlights and only had one working wiper. On the passenger side. So, on rainy nights, the passenger had to hold a mag-lite out of the window and tell the driver of any obstacles.

Or;

2: A surly and malevolent Austin Allegro; white with a black vinyl roof. This beast had haunted electrics, an ignition system that was seemingly controlled by a random-number generator, and, to add insult to injury, if anyone was foolish enough to open the passenger glove box, the entire dash fell off.

The Marina was in intrinsically worse condition, but it got us up & down the country twice and only cost fifteen pouns, whereas the Allegro very rarely moved without a struggle, so it's a toss up.

Malaise-Era British cars: A unique, special kind of horrible other nations will never be able to match...

worst cars are up there ^^^ somewhere.

Best for both of us (because we've both owned them at some stage) are xantia 2.0 turbo activa. Mad french things that look innocent but have "active" roll suspension so they can out corner most cars (NSX included ). Also had a P6 rover and a mk 1 3 ltr P5 Rover which was awesome. Special mentions to the 2 estelles, the Wolsely Princess (wedge) and the two XMs that I've owned. Most luxurious was a gas powered Lexus GS300.

This is a bit off topic but...

You know those questions which are supposed to reveal something about your personality? (You know, like "who is your favourite Beatle" - and who you say reflects the sort of person YOU are)

OK here is one we heard which is for ermm "petrolheads"

If you could chose a classic car which is OLDER THAN YOU what would it be?

our answer is the original 1960s Citroen DS SUCH a cool car...

Oh I am so with you, despite what I have said about French cars! We had a 1957 DS Series 1 and it was a bag of nails, but when it did go, you felt like royalty.

The suspension oil (Shell LHV and not the later LHS!)at £1 per pint in 1969 it cost £4 per week just for that! Leaked like a leaking thing from Leaksville!

The ride was superb and the seats were like armchairs and everything was quirky from the single spoke steering wheel to the one bold removable rear wings!

I suppose it was both the best and worst car we had as a family! lol

And they tend to pull over to let queues past. If they dont and you give them a little flash (lights) they then tend to pull over or at least hold vehicle closer to left to allow safer overtaking. Total rubbish! As a lorry driver in past years, I never pulled over to let cars past me. Not because I was inconsiderate, but because I had a job to do and pulling over to let traffic past would have run me out of hours! Funny thing is, Most of the lorry drivers I still have contact with are also caravanners! Go figure…

Now, If you are talking about a long wide stretch of road and there is an extra piece of runoff tarmac? Yep, we used to pull onto to that to aid overtaking, but that is in a heavy vehicle that is unlikely to grab at the edge of the road if you misjudge .

Loving the comment about Official stats.. Where else would you get information about how many motorists get injured overtaking caravans? Like I said and as you ignored it, what about trucks??

Read my post again and notice the word 'tend'. And as for trucks/lorries they tend to be more couteous drivers. And from noticing my use of the word 'tend' can i make clear that not all caravaners are roadhogs.

Sometimes im a roadhog. About 5/6 times a year i tow trailers up and down the country on varying grades of roads. I pull in when i can from checking my mirrors frequently to check i do not have a queue behind me. This costs me time and fuel like you have said but its much safer for everyone concerned.

I have witnessed two accidents (fortunately only witnessed)involing caravans. One in Wales and the other in Scotland. In both cases the caravans had a very long queue behind them for quite a lot of miles and had plentiful opportunities to pull in. But of course they didnt. It was either pure ignorance or very careless driving. In both cases a car went to overtake after waiting quite patiently for what seemed like ages. One did not see a car approaching at very high speed, the other misjudged the road conditions. Both were done for speeding and danderous driving. Appalling when you take into consideration that all witnesses (apart from the caravaners) stated and complained to the police that the caravaners were at fault due to very slow queue for many miles and on one of the occasions erratic driving. However the cars overtaking were both travelling at only 60mph - the limit for those roads.

Of course im am not taking my opinion from only two accidents. Im taking my opinion from witnessing so many very near misses from 30000-50000miles of driving a year around the country (non work miles) where again the caravaners were at fault, but of course the car driving gets accused of speeding and dangerous driving because the caravan was travelling at the speed it was able to travel at! I have also witnessed same with truckers but nowhere near to the same extent. When i was a teenager i travel many miles around Norn Iron with my uncle in his lorry. He was a courteous driver with the attitude of its safer to pull over whether im late or not, but of course this was not always possible, so i undersatand where youre coming from which is why i use the word 'tend' and have reiterated it here so clearly.

I got the same reaction on a previous thread quite recently where i had used the word 'tend' but it seems to be a word that people do not either notice or understand. Again down to ignorance or carelessness. Im not calling you either. But what i would like to make clear is that with that thread i took the P out of them by deciding to wind them up as they took my post too literally. Im not taking the P out of you. Im stating my point of _iew from my experience with evidence to back it up.

Peeps not taking opinions from experience should not take posts too literally as it would save me from having to over-explain myself and especially save others from having to read/drag themselves through such a long post.

So, both were speeding and not paying attention!

"Appalling when you take into consideration that all witnesses (apart from the caravaners) stated and complained to the police that the caravaners were at fault due to very slow queue for many miles and on one of the occasions erratic driving. However the cars overtaking were both travelling at only 60mph - the limit for those roads. "

But you said they were both done for speeding and the police do know by working out skids and other forensic items, how fast someone is going!

"Of course im am not taking my opinion from only two accidents. "

So, lets get this right, you drive for work and for pleasure. For pleasure you do between 576 and 961 miles per week! I average 30000 miles a year and that is difficult enough to stay alert! But just for pleasure and on top of work mileage? Sheesh! Just 576 miles a week would cost £86.30 per week! Or £4500 per year!

"I have also witnessed same with truckers but nowhere near to the same extent. When i was a teenager i travel many miles around Norn Iron with my uncle in his lorry. Well, if you know the tacho rules about hours, you would understand that these days you can't pull over and stop to let people by! Do that 5 times and that is at least 20 minutes gone from slowing to back up to speed, especially if there is a lot of traffic!

"I got the same reaction on a previous thread quite recently where i had used the word 'tend' but it seems to be a word that people do not either notice or understand. Well the caravaner with the witnesses stating he was driving erratically admitted he was driving erratically because the queue behind him was travelling so fast therefore putting him under pressure and not allowing him to pullover to let us all past!!! Over 50 cars were travelling at the same speed he was - between 30-40 mph!

The other caravaner stated he did not pull over to let the queue past because it was so big that he he felt it would take him an age to let it pass if he did pullover. Erm...hangon. He caused the very long queue which included other larger caravans/motorhomes/trucks!

Its the baltant apparent ignorance attitude of the majority of caravaners that causes queues, not the fact that caravans/motorhomes are on the road.

Twice a year i travel by motorhome (not driving) and we have yet to have any problems in the sense of a complaint that we are on the road. What does cause us problems are other caravaners/ motorhome drivers!

A traffic officer i used to know through an old friend stated to me once that yes we do pull over slower moving vehicles for holding up traffic (five vehicles or more) when they have sufficient opportunities to pull in and let the traffic behind past but we waste our time because it usually doesnt go as far as the courts and when it does on the very rare occasion it gets thrown out. He also commented with the backup off his wife, a highly ranked police officer, caravaners have a law of their own and they know they get away with it, thats why we stay away froms sites as much as possible or we stay in some corner if we have to. Iasked, what youve got a caravan. Their reply was no a motorhome and we do get unnecessary abuse from impatient and aggressive drivers, but we drive according to road laws of course and are as courteous as possible, so while we notice the attitude of many drivers towards caravaners, we also have an understanding of why this attitude exists. They would not comment on individual accidents i had witnessed as they of course were not allowed to do this.

Yes about 576 - whatever other figure miles you stated per week - just for pleasure. I love driving. Only drive 30-60 miles per day for work, sometimes less, a pickup with sometimes a trailer. I live in Scotland. Good driving roads with beautiful scenery all around.

Cant be bothered replying to rest of stuff. Have better things to do.

Im away to watch a Top Gear DVD for about the 100th time. Now, which one do i choose. Aha. Of course one with caravans getting smashed.

Byyeee.
