I noticed there was a cycling thread, so i thought id start a running thread so people can share how their doing with their running. I'll start it off - i thought id take on the challenge of running a marathon for the first time this year. So i've just finished my 6th week of training today and im knackered

Chester half marathon in May, and ran an 8 miler this morning.

I run 4 times a week with some cross training when I can.

I try and do 3 - 4 10km each year, as motivators, plus the 1/2 M

I did a 10k today. 8 minutes slower than the last, but no training and a week in Poland will do that.

Plan to come in under 1 hour at the next attempt in May.

I hate running.

You'll break the one hour..just keep training......

Do a 3 miler at a faster pace once a week and that will help a lot.....

Running is 70% in the mind

Good luck x

In what may not be the best idea ever, 3 halves on consecutive weekends in March, Brighton marathon in April. Race the Train in August, Bournemouth marathon in October.

Have done far more halves than I can remember, despite 3 attempts not managed a decent marathon time yet thoough

I signed up for the Taunton marathon in early April, but pulled my Achilles tendon three weeks ago so I am going to have to pull out now

I'm keeping my fitness up with swimming instead but it doesn't do the same for me that running does.

I miss running. I gave up running long distance after I did ironman UK a few years back. Been doing mostly weight training but recently started a few short runs 3 or 4 times a week. I don't have any goals so will probably just keep to short quick runs for fitness only.

I love running and in my head I am a 54kg ultra fast distance runner.

In reality I am a 94kg lump.

Been running pretty much since I was about 12.

But retired from anything competitive after my last ironman race.

These day's I do a couple of 40min runs on treadmill as part of my cardio in the gym.

Discover the other day I have the onset of arthritis in both knees so I think my running days are numbered.

I will keep going until it's not possible then just stick to swimming.

There are actually plenty of studies that show running may actually be beneficial to those with arthritis in their knees, as it promotes strength and flexibility

For my 50th year I wanted to set myself a challenge and entered the London Marathon. My training included a few local 10k's and a half marathon 6 weeks before. The training is hard but worth all the pain. Would I do another marathon? No.

I still run 3 times a week and cycle.

Well done for doing london marathon. I have been trying for 5 years to get in london without going the charity route and no luck, so i thought sod it, ill do another marathon as my first one instead.

I'm quite lucky that i've built up a good level of fitness over the last few years so im confident i can finish it. My trouble is im quite competitive with myself and want to get close to 3hrs 15mins for it. Even if i don't get near the time i want, going through a marathon training cycle will help me get my times down in the 10ks and half marathons in the future, and they are the ones i enjoy doing.

I was happy to raise cash for a charity, the difficult part was deciding on which charity as I had 3 offers.

Was chuffed at raising over 6000 pounds for breast cancer.

Yes, guess it helps having some fitness level and the half marathon definately helped me work out my issues mentally on how to keep plodding for 42kms!

My trouble is I'm not competitive but determined, so that kept me going to the finish.

Am now focused for a biathlon in June.

Good luck with your training OP

Ran the muster this morning - 8 miles - and ran sub 5 minute power km which is my 1/2 marathon target pace = 1 hour 45 minutes.

This is a "grail" time for me and pb, of course, so well on target with my training

Just East of Wakefield

I try to run about 35-40 miles a week

However, most of this year, so far has been taken up with knee pain, hence a very poor start (was same last year)

Only run a few 'halfs', sub '43' for a 10K, & was trying like hell to get under '21' for a ParkRun - to no avail yet

I prefer to be off-road, as it's more interesting, & you have to think about almost every step

Meant to be fell-racing next Sunday, but seeing as it's got a couple of rocky descents, l may give it a miss, and preserve my knee?

Thus, it'll have to be a few hours on the bike instead

I only trained to 19 miles.. Completed a half in early March, then a strong fast 10m.. Race, two weeks before hand left me perfect.. For pulling down, the mileage, in the days before..

I also found, keeping any weight, on was hard!! Once the long runs, really do become long!! Check your diet out, look at protein drinks, and replacement, for that meal after.. ( cooked chicken, Turkey, eggs, fish...) prep.. Before the run.. Carb up, too.. 24 hours before.. I ended up running the marathon on a sorren malt loaf and peanut butter, because the hostel, wouldn't serve, before 8am!!

So, what kit do you runners have/ use ?

Do you have favourite brands, or kit?

Are you a basics owner or fasionista ?

Do you use any tech wear ? Smart phones and apps or watches ?

I swear by my Brooks Ravenna on my plates, and prefer long tights as they're compression ones

I'll wear basic tops etc. But like a silken vest to stop any nipples chafing

Other fave brands are Asics (but have to size up) and Adidas

I can't be doing without my MiCoach app on my phone, as that's a great training/ recording app and has plenty of training programs

I always wear Brooks GT15 on my feet. And have a polar RC3 GPS 9N my wrist.

Kit wise expensive shorts (with gel pockets built in fir halves and marathons, karrimoor shorts for anything shorter. Club vest for races (online club) free tops from races for training. . Winter kit is a mix of asics and Adidas picked up from outlet stores and TK Max!

My girlfriend runs with no gadgets and finds the reaction of most people to this hilarious!

Not too fussed about expensive kit

On the road,'it's whatever shoes my local shop had in stock (& in my budget)

Shorts?, got a couple of pairs of Ron Hill for races, but generally something like Karrimore

However, for fell-races, it's Inov8 shoes, weather/terrain dependant, it's either Roc-Lite, X-Talon, Mud-Claw (or if icy, OROC, which have tungsten carbide studs)

Got a Garmin ForeRunner (305?), but i doubt l've worn jt since 2014?

I tend to use Adidas or Brooks for shoes, and have certain ones i prefer for my faster training/races. I have a favourite pair of adidas shoes i wear in all my races, but as im marathon training i now have 5 pairs i rotate on different days so my body doesn't get used to running in the same pair all the time. I have a Garmin 620 which links up with my heart rate monitor and gives me my VO2 max reading. I can use this to monitor if Im gaining or losing fitness.

"Would love a running buddy near the St Albans area "

Why not go along to the St Albans parkrun?

It's run in Verulamium Park, St Albans.

I absolutely love running. Unfortunately after being a part of a society at uni, it means that so do a lot of my mates.

It's hard to brag about your sub 23 minute 5k when your friends won a race with a 32 minute 10k... Absolute savagery.

My 5km times in gym have been getting quicker just need to get used to doing it

I am aiming somewhere in next few weeks between 27 & 28 mins

Yes, we've got some of those, 'sub 17' ParkRunners, & equally capable of winning a marathon (& they do!)

It shames my sub '21:10' ParkRuns

I'm gradually counting down the weeks to the end of my marathon training. Only a further 5 full weeks until the taper starts, but now it's the really long distances of 18 miles and over for the next 5 sunday runs. I'm looking forward to running those nice and slow, as running at Marathon pace and quicker does start to tire you out after a while.

I had a tough run yesterday, it was really blowy out there

I was supposed to be running a negative split, that is a faster second half than the first.

Got to a point where I was getting tunnel vision, and thought I might have been going hyper, so had to cut it right back, and take it easy homewards

Deliberately pushing myself out of the comfort zone, to try and get stronger, I think it's working

5 miles tonight, first run in 10 days and clearly not quite over the cold that had me laid up last week.

5 big weeks in front of me now, not quite where I wanted to be but as long the body holds up I'll smash my martahin PB in Brighton as I'm still way ahead of where I was a year ago

Had a tough session tonight - 6x4 minutes at 6 minute mile pace, and only 1 minute recovery between the intervals. 8.5 miles with the warm up and warm down.

I ran nearly every day in January but circumstances this month have meant I have done very little running.

I did however knock 10mins off my 10k pb the other week which I was fairly chuffed aboit.

Have my first hm in April so need to get serious with my training on March. Furthest I've run so far is 9 miles.

Just stretch your long run by a mile each week and take it easy

The important thing is just to be able to run the distance and get your body used to doing so gradually

Done a bit of running this year, quite like it, trying to get used to distances and a pace that is comfortable. Got some good targets for now, though there's so many training programmes out there it's hard to know where to start / which ones best for me.

Though I'm biassed I'll tout the Adidas MiCoach App.

There are training plans for many sports and in running distances from sprint to marathon, beginners to 2hr15mins marathon runners

I think they've got the balance right and it's informative and comprehensive

Plus they have Jess Ennis as a voice coach

Go to Up and Running on the rows in Chester or TriActive in Rufus Court, you should get a decent analysis there

Today was different. Was supposed to do a 17 miler (organised training run with a few hundred people, but not strictly a race), overrunning engineering work meant that my train was cancelled which meant I missed my lift.

Came home, went back to bed and then dragged myself out this afternoon. Struggled mentally as was looking forward to a group run but managed 12.5 miles in just under 2 hours.

I'm completely the opposite, I've done nearly all of my marathon training on my own, and sort of prefer it, as i can stick my headphones in and adjust my pace depending how I'm feeling on a particular run.

Most of my running is done on my own, but the organisers of the Chester Half hold a monthly muster, where you get to run with your pace makers for the day, get to know what it feels like to run en masse, socialise, follow training plans and swap war stories. It's all good fun

We're out on Sunday morning doing a six to ten miler, depending on experience

I seem to be really struggling right now for form, not sure why, I lost 10 days training on February due to illness but I've been back running for 2 weeks and it's like running in treacle! Berkhampstead half tomorrow, hopefully a solid run there will do the trick!

The hip pain could be caused by a weakness in your core strength. I had similar hip pain that lasted for months until i saw a physio who suggested some core exercises.

The gels would be the best option, but i just can't get on with any of them. Tried 4 different makes but they just make me throw up or give me upset stomach and it seems this is quite common. I've used jelly babies for half marathons before when i first starting running them, so ill just use them or maybe some jelly beans.

I'm peaking at about 53-55 miles a week on my biggest mileage week, which will be this week. I'm going for a sub 3hr 30 mins for my first marathon, so my training plan is quite tough.

You should aim to do as a minimum 1.5 times the distance of your race, 1/2 marathon = 20 miles; marathon 40 miles etc.

Your long run should progress week on week up to and near your race distance, and then taper.

I'm up to 9/10 miles as a long run for my 1/2 marathon in May, and run the 3-5 miles three times a week too

It's the terrain

Today's race was across woods and up limestone escarpment

My normal 5km is about 21 minutes. Today's race time was 27

Have you got a pair of decent blister running socks?. They make a big difference for me. The blisters ive got recently have come from wearing normal shoes rather than running. If you have blisters I'd give elastoplast blister plaster's a go. When i had a nasty blister, these were the only thing that made any difference.

I only went and came in third

Well done

I've got Silverstone half tomorrow, hoping for a PB but don't think I'm fresh enough as it's I'm the middle of marathon training. Hoping I'll get close to it though

Should be a good run, just think of it as part of your training programme

We've got the Oulton Park Asics 1/2 marathon and 10k up here, great to run on a race circuit "

I;ve heard lots of mixed reviews on Silverstone but of nothing else it will be a different experience running on a race track!

ive done a couple of marathons and loads of halfs, 10k's etc. When preparing for London a few years back I had a few niggles here and there, nothing major but Iirritable nontheless. Best advice I got from a man who operates his own running company organising trips, accomodation etc and with over 100 marathons to his name. He said 2 speed sessions per week lasting no more than 45mins and 1 long run.....give ur body plenty of rest and do low impact cardio such as swimming, cross trainer etc. He couldn't stress enough that high mileage is the most common reason for injury. To be a runner u don't always have to run was his mantra...lol!! Ur body will normally always tell you if its tired, sore, etc. Best of luck with ur marathon OP.

Did Silverstone on Sunday, the dullest most uninspiring course I have ever ran. Had targeted a PB (1.48) and was on track for it at 9 miles but died a million deaths in the last few miles and clocked 1.52. Was quite disappointed on the day but got the results yesterday and had scraped into the first 2000 finishers (out of 6700) and in the first 250 for my age cat so was clearly a better run than I initially thought! Looking at the winners times it was a mistake to think it was a PB course and target it but you live and learn.

Got a trail half this Sunday that I'll do at marathon pace and then tag 5 miles on to it and a 22 miler the weekend after. And then it's time to taper!

Well done on run...I've ran it twice. ..no atmosphere and all you hear is other people's feet...which drained me....well done though as another training run ticked off towards big day

I tried to run 16 at weekend...could only manage 12...crossed off as a 'bad run day'

Thanks I only did it because my girlfriend got a free place with the charity she's doing VLM with. As you say absolutely no atmosphere and the scenary is even worse! To be honest if I'd got a PB I'd have been buzzing, the shit or bust approach was always high risk though!

Club run earlier in week

Just been out, for a local 5mile XC, still very muddy out there (with still a few overflowing ponds)

Local half yesterday, ran the first 8 or 9 miles with the 2 hour pacer before pushing on and finishing in 1.57. After last week's Silverstone debacle need to know I could run at marathon pace and still be fresh at the end. And them did another 6 miles on the evening at marathon pace. 4 weeks to go and looking forward to the taper starting as am.pretty much wrecked!

Knocked off 17 km in 1 hr 30 mins yesterday. So I'm well on target for my 1hr45min target in the half marathon

(Long run is slower paced than race pace )

Just got to keep myself injury free and the mileage up for the next 6 weeks

Me and a friend did a week of One Punch Man workout last week... Wouldn't recommend... It was just for the banter.

One way to spend my unemployed month I suppose.

Great effort are you running the marathon in costume? I debated it for a good donation offer but I couldn't do it I don't think!

Nice and easy 8km this morning, long run (19km) tomorrow and a week of sprint work ahead.

That race day deadline is sneaking up on me

"22 miles done yesterday, 50 ran in the last 6 days - bring on the taper! "

Nice one. I put my long run off until tomorrow - still recovering from the 20 miler i did last sunday. I'm still thinking about if to do 20 or 22 miles. I might do 12 at nice easy pace, and then 10 at Marathon pace. Just worried 22 miles is too long for a first time marathoner.

Can't be too long for a marathon !

You'll have another four miles to go on the day

You've got to let your body used to doing that distance, but also sufficient time to recover in between

I might go for time on my legs instead of trying to do 22 miles. If i get 3hrs on my feet, then i should be ok.

I've often had to run on the day before on my long runs, so really I've often got 6-8 miles in my legs from the previous day. I ran a 20 mile race having done 8 mile interval run the day before, and you can't recover from that in 1 day, so towards the end of the race, the tireness i felt would have been equivalent to close to the end of the marathon.

personally I think that 22 miles is too long, the main reason i did it was because I fell apart so badly in my last marathon that psychologically I needed it.

My girlfriends club do a run in the lead up to VLM, the marathon runners do the whole route and others tag on for different sections. It was great fun, 4 of us did the whole run but there were around 30-40 out. Great fun

For Bournemouth later in the year I won't do more than 16 or 18 and will focus on cumulative miles rather than the length of individual runs
