They made me feel spaced out so I stopped taking them, probably would have worn off if I'd carried on longer with them but I couldn't function properly.

About ten years ago I took them. Made me feel a bit queezey for a couple of weeks, nothing heavy. Tbh the doctor had me on a few other meds at the time so difficult to say if it was down to them or not.

My friend is taking them at the moment, she has had no side effects.

Careful if you get d*unk on them (not advisable)

The only side effect I got was excessive sweating, but they stopped working for me as I got used to the dose. Everyone will have different experiences though. Youre welcome to pm me if you want anymore info

That would just be coincidence.

It can be a side effect like any of the drugs. But it takes a good couple of weeks to take an effect on the brain so I think it might take a bit longer to make your poop change

Could be the tablets but also could be just the way that you're feeling anyway. The centre that controls emotion in your brain is in the same region as the centre that controls the digestive tract...Hense often people who are upset need the toilet etc. X

Everyone's side effects to medication are different.. If any at all... 3 weeks is minimum you should take them before deciding if any side affects are a problem... Unless severe or affecting your day to day life. Your body needs time to adjust

I am on those combined several other medications. They lowered my sex drive and made it harder to orgasm at first. A year later I have got my drive back but its still hard to climax.

That would just be coincidence.

It can be a side effect like any of the drugs. But it takes a good couple of weeks to take an effect on the brain so I think it might take a bit longer to make your poop change "

I was fine drinking on sertraline, but couldn't on citalopram. One drink would get me hammered

I had to start taking them as Certraline wasn't working for me.

I am on a dose of 150mg a day and am allowed to go up to the maximum 200 but am wanting to leave the wiggle room for if things get really bad.

I think that you just need to give them a chance to do their magic and see how it goes.

Sadly the side effects have to go hand in hand sometimes with the drug doing what it needs to do to help you get along day to day x

Possibly. Something to keep an 'eye' on though.

Of more concern is to keep a check on your mood and how you're feeling. A change in this sort of medication may result in you feeling down before you feel up - if that makes sense (in the limited way I want to talk about it on an open forum!)

Be but came off then and started new ones today

Side affects in first few days and last few included feeling restless, light headed and felt like I was unable to concentrate

They worked for my moods but I had side affects when I went up to 150mg

Coming off them has been a bitch

But just got to wait for new ones to kick in as I've only started them today

I changed to taking mine at bedtime as like RoxiAnne I felt spaced out - almost trippy. I wasn't safe to drive & *TMI* I had a nipple discharge which stopped after a few weeks.

They take a good 2-4 weeks to really start working x

Yeah I went to the doctors and said I feel almost as if I'm off it all the time

I definitely wouldn't encourage anyone to drive until the side affects wear off

I'm spaced out today and it's horrible

But it's nice to know I'm not alone and others know what it feels like x

My daughter has been on these for 18months now. When she first started taking them she had a lot of side effects... Problems with her sleep pattern, feeling spaced out, tummy issues.

These mostly subsided after the first month and she now has no side effects except on the odd occasion that she forgets to take them. She was on citalopram before that And had to come off them as the side effects were so bad x

I'm on 50mg at the moment. The initial side effects were interesting but they subsided after about 3 weeks. I won't say what they were as they're different for everyone. I have to say that it's one of the best thing I've ever done and I wish I'd started them years ago.

Mrs L was on them years ago. Made me feel spaced out, tired, loss of appetite which made me loose weight, no interest in sex and when I did have sex I couldn't orgasm. Was on them for 2 years

Hi, I took them for about 6 weeks. Had progressively worse stomach problems with sickness and diarrhea. By the end I couldn't leave house aas stomach was so bad.

Then changed to citalopram and no side effects really.

May well be related, so keep an eye on it.

It doesn't help the original problem if the 'cure' makes you feel terrible in a different way.

Yes i started on 50mg a day now im on 200mg a day. They help me a lot. Worst thing i do is think i can cope without them and stop taking them. Feel fine for a couple of weeks then boom. Ive just accepted i need to take them and workout out daily and it helps with my life. Can affect your sex life but i dont get any anyway so not a issue. I take mine before bed that way i dont feel like a zombie in the day. Never understood why not to be taken with grapefruit juice thou

One of the curious results from sertraline treatment is that this medicine does manage to reach concentrations in our bodies that could result in us feeling some relief from depression, as well as other physical effects, in just a few short hours - but typically doesn't. People who gain benefits typically need a stable dose for several weeks before depression improves.

But its effective presence can impact upon other parts of our nervous system more quickly - such as our digestive system. Whilst its main focus is on elevating Serotonin levels it can indirectly alter other neurotransmitter levels and these changes can be experienced much more quickly than the antidepressant effects.

It's difficult to know whether this has occurred for you op.

Our whole system will react in different ways to changes imposed upon it and will often manage to achieve some balance within a few days from effects like this.

A question to ask yourself is how you'd interpret this if you had simultaneous relief from feeling low. And if this digestive interference reduced, whilst you gained the ongoing benefits of reducing depression?

Only we each individually can decide if side effects are a price too high for us to pay for a medicine to potentially improve our wellbeing.

So I'm coming at this from a slightly different perspective to most here. It's probably a little too early to correlate the two things - more time could make this easier to do. It may have disturbed your system already but the pay off is that it may now also be elevating your brains Serotonin levels too - albeit you likely won't feel more positive for a couple of weeks or more.

The most important thing is to let your GP know of your possible side effects and urgently if they are serious. And to beware of any increase towards suicidal thoughts, which we might all get.

This ^ they can also desensitize you slightly and makes it harder to reach orgasm. I know people that hated being on them but they've worked well for others, you may need to just give it time to see how your body reacts x

Im actually on a medical trial for them and just started this week for Liverpool University. So far they caused me constant but subtle trembling, insomnia, headache and difficulty with concentration at 50mg per day. I go up to 100mg next week

Thankyou and I totally understand what you're point of view is. I can handle loose stools (it's very not like me to have loose stools, or even go on a regular basis) I can't handle feeling nauseous or being sick or any time of stomach pain (if this was to happen)

I used to be on amitriptyline, maybe I should try these again?

The night after I started taking them I got the headache and dizziness. My gut didn't like them either. I also lost my appetite since the day after. But I fund that if im on the move the fresh air helps

No probs. Worth mentioning I was born with hypothyroidism so I'm delicate as it is when it comes to medication. I can't even take any morphine products.

Sertraline has a reputation for a lot of side effects, one of which is, believe it or not, depression lol but the effects which take anywhere between two weeks to a month may be worth a little nausea while your body gets used to it.

Its tough to take advice on medication from others as some work for some and not others.

I was on the highest dose of Citalapram and my god the suicidal thoughts, ive since come of the to go onto venlflaxine.

Again though its hard to know what is right, I was told to take 75mg in the morning and 150mg in the evening by my GP, since found out that doing this renders the drug as good as useless so I now take 225 in the morning and Mirtaxapine in evening and feel much better for it

I take them and when I started I was very tired all the time and had a few headaches and tummy upsets. The side effects lasted maybe 6 weeks but felt like forever.... you should persevere or go back to your doctor if you can't cope with the side effects but don't just stop taking them

I'd not want anyone but you and your GP to come to a decision on whether to move from this to another med or not.

I've got personal experience of anti-depressants and also expertise in this area. I also understand how some physical problems can be something we won't or could tolerate.

Someone else mentioned the importance of not suddenly stopping SSRI meds - if you decide not to continue, do it with your GPs advice and guidance.

With some luck this won't recur and when a few weeks have passed, you'll gain the benefit from it that you're needing.

The range of SSRI meds have some shared side effects and some will affect us differently - it's seemingly random.
