I think it a lot more than that but I'm sure you don't want to hear about how they helped revitalise engineering and the economy after the war. How they were the car 75% of the population of Africa first saw.

I won't start about they brought mobility to the armed forces and how they were a small affordable tractor for the farming community.

Obviously the fact that they are used by emergency services and voluntary groups use them to rescue people from places inaccessible to other vehicles won't intrest you.

Over 2 million have been made over a 67 year period. Today the last one, a green soft top 90 rolled off the production line.

They are totally at home up to their axles in mud or parked outside Buckingham Palace. No other vehicle has been so versatile, few have the following that Land Rover has.

Environmentally speaking they can be constantly fixed or improved. If it was just a car it would be scrapped not repaired, restored and rejuvenated...

I have had a Land Roverso in my life since 1980. My current one I have 15 years and I have no intention of ever selling it...

In fact I'm going to be buried in it, because it's never been in a mud hole it couldn't get out of...

My boss had one and customers used to come in the shop giving me their details to pass on if he wanted to sell it.

He refused. Then he wrote it off.

"ive not heard what is happening to the people who have been making the defender, more eu rules stop production"

It's a combination of things...

It's not pedestrian friendly...

No airbags etc which the EU don't like.

From Land Rover's point of view it's expensive to build. It takes something like 300 employees to build 500 90/110's compared with 150 to build over 1000 Range Rovers...As told on a factory that I did just before Christmas...

My tyres 33x12.5x15 MT's range from £100 to £200. Being honest I wouldn't trust a tyre costing £27 unless it was on my wheelbarrow...

A large percentage of 90/110/130's are used ether for their off road capabilities or for towing. They are capable of towing more than most 4x4's.

Yes Land Rover's other products are mainly used on road even though each one leads its class in off road capability. However they are often bought by people that buy whichever is the car of the moment and will be changed for the latest must have car or 4x4...

by the big field

Used to work there on a regular basis many years ago, got chatting to the chief test driver one day over a brew (had the pleasure of being driven round the test track at their site and the one they use down south by him)- I asked him which was the best, the Range Rover or the Discovery for mud plugging. 'Neither! Both are useless compared to the defender- we always take a 110 along on test days to pull out the posh cars"

You could not be more wrong

Functional is beautiful and I have been places in mine that you will never see. Expensive? I suppose they are but that is because they last and last and last and are desirable.

Gas guzzler? Don't know about that. I get an average of 28mpg out of recycled chip oil

£115 a corner but I did get over 50k miles out of the last set. They were still good for road use at that but not for the all-round performance I wanted.

They are not for everyone by any means. If you want an adventure then a defender is the car for you. If you want something that just gets you from a 2 b and will be on the scrap pile in an average of 8 years (modern euro boxes expected life span) and you dont care because you change cars as often as you change your underwear then pick a one size fits all eurobox.

I drive a legend so am happy with a myth...

There's a video filmed at a country estate. A guy drives his Mercedes 4x4 off a track towards a hill and gets stuck. A guy in a BMW X5 drives past and gets stuck at the bottom of the hill. The land owner drives past in his Range Rover and manages to get half way up the hill. The gamekeeper drives past in his Series II and stops when he gets to the top of the hill...

A car!!! clearly you know little about the Land Rover Defender. Due to its ladder chassis and meccano style construction the Defender and it's series predicessors have been the most versatile vehicles Land Rover ever built.

Nothing in production yet according to the factory.

There is talk of two new models. The replacement Defender and a new lifestyle model baseductive on the dc100 concept vehicle.

On the factory visit in December, we saw a new convertible Evoque and the new Jag F-pace.

The tour guide said that no one outside of the designers knew what the new Defender looks like and it will be 2017 before it goes into production...

On the bright side Frisky is nearly ready to let me buy a 110 to go with the 90....

i notice the last defender came off the production line with its lights flashing and horn blaring .

this was later traced to a fuse box fault

"Who else is fed up of listening about the land rover defender its a car for f**ks sake. "
. It is a vehicle which has a very long history and will be of interest to people who own them. It is probably best described as a utility vehicle.

"I think it a lot more than that but I'm sure you don't want to hear about how they helped revitalise engineering and the economy after the war.

. An interesting history and a good summary of the vehicles achievement throughout the world .

I've had Land Rovers since I was 14. The simple fact that 70% of those made still exist says volumes for the soundness of the design. Long may they still be a familiar sight.
