The flipping mail system on here!

It is soooo frustrating when you're having a few ongoing chats with friends and your mailbox fills up so fast that you can't get to messages received before to reply to them.

WHY can we only access the first however many messages in our mailbox? And why is there no system to allow us to download and archive messages to our computer without doing it one at a time?

This site has to have the most archaic mailbox system ever.

It seems silly that the messages are still there (if within the time period), and you just have to delete the newer ones. A numbered page viewing interface would be better.

Even in the faq admin recognises some people get hundreds of messages per day, and then only lets us see the first 75, (I think it's 75?).

75 fills up awfully fast though, and since the site auto deletes messages after a few weeks, surely it's not that much of a problem?

People might be more likely to read and delete if they could bulk download messages to their computer first. Most other sites I use have this feature and it's very useful.

Sometimes I want to save a conversation.

It's part of my OCD, I think. I like to be able to keep messages.

This is me we're talking about. If you need to ask, it's probably more a moan or a whinge than an actual rant

It's because; from a programming point of view, it can be stressful on the server if it'd expected to pull up say 200 messages. Especially since those 200 messages wouldn't be read.

From a programming point of view, it makes sense to only pull the last 75 or so.

Bear in mind that from a technical point of view, it doesn't just pull 85 for you, it pulls 75 for every user on fab, every time they open their mailbox!

A way they could get around this is to mark messages as 'from a friend'. You'd have a mailbox for friends and a standard mail box.

That's the way I'd get around it.

It doesn't make sense that a site would choose to make it as user unfriendly as possible. No end user cares about the programming difficulties, they want ease of use.

Not necessarily. I could be coded to only load the first 75 initially but then pull down more if the person clicked on to the next page.

It would add to server load, but it would also mean people could go back and clear older messages without having to delete newer ones.

Separate friends and others mailboxes would also help.

It would be entirely fair to make this a feature available only to, say, gold subscribers, or even a feature with a subscription of its own, to cover the extra load. I'd use it and I'd be happy to pay (a little!) for the facility, in the same way I pay for silver for some of the features.

It's just because admin can't be bothered to put the time and money into doing it better.

Let's face it, Fab is one of the most archaic websites any of us will ever use. It will be the same as it is today in ten years time.

But it does what it says on the tin, so who can feel bad about it?

When I'm chatting to someone and I don't want to be 'interrupted' I just delete everything off my looking for list and make my profile even crapperer than usual. That cuts my mailbox down to a swirling desert of nothingness. Peace.

Mostly the basic interface doesn't bother me at all. In some ways it's nice that it's fairly streamlined and simple.

There are a few features I'd definitely appreciate though. I've posted about them before in the appropriate forum and I've seen others ask for the same but I won't hold my breath for them.

In general, however, I think the site does most of what I want it to.

I switched my single man mail filter off a couple of days ago and forgot to put it back on. It resulted in 50 messages, most of which I didn't feel like responding to immediately, and which I now can't get to as a result of several ongoing conversations with friends.

Those men are probably part of the camp that think I am rude for not replying. I would reply, if I could get to the messages without having to go through the ongoing conversations and work out which messages I can clear and which I need to keep for now.

Some of these conversations are about things like Swingfields, where the messages contain information still relevant. I don't want to have to save them all to my saved box, and I'm not ready to delete them yet.

Well, yes, it could just have pages I guess. It still add additional load though because the server would have to count the amount of messages each user has, before calculating how many pages to offer.

When a user deletes messages, it has to reprocess it again!

Whenever you make even small changes to the sites, it will open up further issues/glitches.

It would probably cost around £500 or so to implement these changes!

I suppose it depends on their finances I guess.

It is both doable and practical! But it depends on whether they want to pay the money. They could go and have loads of big updates and modernise the whole thing, but I assume they are trying to keep this site cheap for people.

Well you could screen shot the messages and save them on your PC. You would have the entire conversation in a separate folder for each person you chat to, then delete from fab.

by threaded conversations do you mean a history of the conversation I'm having with someone?

Because mine does that automatically
