If you were a single woman chatting to a single man work colleague and you both mentioned crap ex's, and how crap dating sites are for finding someone... Then a while later he mails and says something like 'when you're free sometime, I'll take you out for a night out'...

Would you think he was suggesting a date, or a night out as mates?

And would you ask him for clarification or just go along and see what happened?

Date, and confirm back what he had in mind

What he replies will fully show you his intent

I'd think date given the context of the conversation.

But I would probably ask in a jokey way just to be sure.

Why not live on the edge - too much of our life is controlled with a need to know every aspect of what's coming next.

Take a chance, use your intuition and enjoy a night out.

I chickened out of asking what he meant and asked what his taste in women is like so I could point some out for him.

Honestly woman!! Did you do the 'would/wouldn't' thing in your head when he emailed?

100% a date. He'd like to take you out.

If he said "lets go out" as in 'together' you are going somewhere then maybe it's just friendly. What he said was he wanted to take you out which is standard asking you out on a date phrasing, him leading the date and taking you somewhere.

That's my take on it anyway.

Go and see what happens, if anything happens at the end of the night then you will know, to me it sounds like he asked you out on a date but then I know nothing!!

It might be a trap.

My advice to anyone else would be to ask. If he says no it's just mates I'll feel such an utter knob.

So the way I see it, you have two options!

1) do what I'd do...not say anything, then over think it and spend the evening totally confusing yourself trying to read his signals!

2) do the sensible thing....just relax, enjoy his company and go with the flow!

Ps this forumite takes no responsibility in option 1 resulting in a headache!

I would treat it as a social, ie don't assume anything, just spend some time alone together as friends and see if there's chemistry for more.
