I have only seen it occasionally on the forums but I got a message saying he could take me out in his Bentley. It didn't annoy me but it did make me wonder if I should have been impressed as it did the opposite.

Because they are proud of what they worked for. And from my experience richer people tend to be much better looking, and have much more interesting lives, instead they boast about what they have got and what they have done with their lives (instead of sitting in the local trying to outdo one-another on how many cheap vadkas thry can down in one night), and if questioned are able to explain clearly what they did to get it. Or in short - they worked hard for it, plus used their brains of course instead of working endless hours on minimum wage to then pay a chunk of it back to taxman! They are basically stating that they wish to meet people of the same mindset as they have.

Lets face it if someone from a poor background in a rough area is given £1k he/she will more than likely spend spend spend resulting in waste waste waste. Give £1k to someone from at least a middle class background and they will spend a little on something they will remember and boast about, the remainder will more than likely be saved or invested. So maybe people on this site should read between the lines when reading profiles. If you can do this then youve got at least a tiny brain (like me). If this is the case use it to do something with your life that you too can be proud of and show for your hard, intelligent work. Instead of moaning about others while at the same time trying to make out you are 'not jealous'!

Ps: i come from a very poor background (piggy banks paid for christmas dinner and school uniforms were only bought once then passed down through family). However i was once quite well off. Then things went pear shaped which i could manage, but i certainly did not predict ill health stopping me from moving for two years. So im almost back to square one but hopefully things will work out by second half of this year, but they certainly wont if i have to work 60-80hrs a week on minimum wage like a fool.

Agreed. I'd much rather talk to someone about what they've experienced in life - regardless of whether that involved money or not - than talk about where their holiday home is located or how big their plasma telly is.

I don't have any problems with someone being wealthy and wouldn't exclude someone simply because of their financial situation - it's just when they're shallow and materialistic that they bore me. As I said, I used to be impressed by that kinda stuff but as I've got older I've become a lot more worldly.

Anyway, talking of Plasma TVs... If anyone's interested I'm selling my 47" Sony Plasma TV for £100. The volume button doesn't work but at that price you can't turn it down!

I think I look at things too simply. I see it like this: Some rich people are arseholes. Some poor people are arseholes. Some rich people are sound. Some poor people are sound. If they're your cup of tea they are, if they're not, they're not. I wouldn't not meet someone just because they're rich and I wouldn't not meet someone just because they're poor.

Do I detect a touch of jealousy there? Why single out one prestige make when you could say that about any luxury car? Surely if someone wants a picture in a car, or on a car even and the car they happen to own is either one of the presige brands, what else can they use?

I don't think most of what has been talked about is showing off. I can remember when we got our first diswasher back in 1972, we got used to it and probably mentioned it in everyday conversation! People were round for dinner and we naturally said "I'll go and load the dishwasher". Same when we got our CD player, I didn't say I"'ll put a record on" I said "I'll stick a CD on!

How many times have we read on these very forums about who has what on their I-Pod! Why not just say music player? No, it is part of your everyday life and you call it what it is!

ive met quite a few wealthy guys over the years ...whatever money they had didnt make me like them anymore than i would have done and thats the truth ...i have certain criteria that makes me like a guy and if a wealthy guy doesnt fulfill my criteria im not interested ... and being wealthy brings its own set of problems .

LOL i say it how it is x i hope i am a nice person .. i had nothing when i was first married at 18 ... all i new is with 4 kids who like me can not read and right well i had to do well and so did john to send them to schools had a go at normal schools but thay never cared.... I have a good life but worked hard for years and years taking very big risks alot of people would never ... and did payed off it makes me no better then no one it makes me lucky as it all could have gone tits up. Like most here money come and go and it makes you no better just maybe do more in life. You should have a go sending 4 away to school .. but its been worth it .. Sons at un fist one in our family to go. others read and wright well i only have this house as no one would do it up as was so so bad still doing stuff after 10 years .. I take old houses and make them live again thats how i see it... when i am Dead a gone my houses will i hope still be here.

Jo there is no need to defend yourself .Even though you had a tough start you obviously have a business head on your shoulders ,so well done .im a pretty clever lady and work in finance but my business skills are Zero...i just dont have the drive ,hence i dont have much materially,but im happy as larry living that way ....doesnt make me any better or worse than anyone we are all who we are and we should embrace that .

OK, I have been fortunate to have a good start in life, thanks to my parents, however, I still have to stand on my own two feet. My parents did not pass the various exams for me - I worked hard to pass them myself!

Bragging, IMHO, is a sign of insecurity.

My wise mum says that if she does not wear anything expensive or drip in fine jewellery, one would not assume she does not have anything nice. Whereas if she wears expensive clothes and jewellery all the time, peeps would say that's all she's got, hence the need to flaunt them.

I love my mum, even though she drives me nuts at times!

This is a good point - I've seen threads started by people moaning about those who they perceive as being rich but obnoxious or uncouth, yet I've not seen any threads started by these rich people criticising the poor people.

Finding something to moan about someone who is/has been successful is a very British trait, in my opinion. Whether it be Premier League footballers such as Wayne Rooney, or celebrities such as Katie Price... it's considered "fair game" to find something about them to moan about - simply because they're successful and more wealthy than most of us.

We're moaning about whether somebody is posting photos of their BMW or talking about the size of their house, when 13% of the world's population don't even have clean drinking water and 38% of the world lack adequate sanitation.

I also heard that in America 85% of all privately held wealth is owned by just 20% of the US population, with 35% being owned by only 1%! The remaining 15% of privately held wealth is shared amongst the remaining 80% of the population.

I'm pretty sure that if we were American all of us on here would fall into that 80% category

I didn't really explain my last point very well.... I'd got bored writing such a long reply that my mind had started to wander.

What I meant was that it kinda put it into perspective for me. I don't consider myself rich... I've got a good job which pays my mortgage and leaves me with beer tokens each month, but I still have to budget for stuff that I want.

But by having running water and a toilet I can use, I'm already better off than a large portion of people on the planet who have neither of these.

I'm trying to be grateful for what I've got rather than what I've not got.
