Opinions please without the use of Google.

What would people say is the single most important invention of all time?

Electricity?

The seat belt?

Mathematics?

The Internet? Apple tango?

The list is long but there must be one that without it everything else would be magoo.

But if we're being serious: string.

Because thread is thin string. Without it no clothes so can't live (in reasonable numbers) outside temperate zone.

Rope is thick string, without it, well, quite a lot. Including arable farming (need it for most ooerations).

I offer you string. I credit it to Bill Bryson.

For me - and every woman I'd say - it has to be contraception!

Because of it we can now have careers - which was almost impossible before when we spent years in a permanently pregnant state!

We can also be polygamous - which only men could do before - as the risk of getting pregnant and 'disgraced' has been taken away!

Contraception puts us on an (almost) level playing field to men - without it we'd still be living in men's shadows and our only options would be marriage and motherhood!

We had numbers for a long time...true mathematics only came about after the invention of the concept of zero (Indian invention). This allowed complex calculations on which are based most science, engineering and other things which then led to an explosion of other inventions.

I therefore postulate that zero is the mother of most of the inventions mentioned elsewhere on this thread....it is even wheel shaped!

The original mould is the one still used an was produced from a cantaloupe in the1940's

Earnest 'chain' was part of the team that originally worked with the mass production....

The original mould was secretly positioned at 3 locations worldwide.

You can grow penicillin at home for sure but I don't think it is guaranteed to work

Bet a lever was used to move the printer (and the stuff that made the printer) before it was installed...

This is certainly likely.

In that case the moped they used to deliver the lever to make the 3D printer to create the first wheel is importanter.

"

Did the moped have wheels? Where did they come from?

London and France

The most important Discovery would be fire; but it is a discovery, rather than invention.

So the most important " invention" would be the very first tool; even if that is just the first rock that was picked up and used to crack a nut, or kill a rabbit for food; we discovered how to use tools.

Tools ... Fnnahh fnnahhh yes, this is sex site lol

I heard it hovered. Apparently they all hovered until some bugger went round sticking wheels on them.

Glass. The Chinese never developed it past glazing their teacups and thus never developed lenses which meant that as people aged, they could still read, writer and do further research. Hence, they had an arrestive culture technologically until lenses were introduced from the west.

Brighton - even Hove!

When I said fire I mean the invention of the method of making fire. One could argue that wheels were discovered via rolling stuff on tree trunks. I might go with writing because it kept knowledge for a longer period than memory and could be read by others all exactly the same.

Think you mean energy..and you are correct his engine was the first to produce energy mechanically, thus liberating the means whereby our industrialised society has allowed us to enjoy standards of living unprecedented in the history of humankind.

It really is glass - according to QI anyway, I remember watching the episode it was on, along with the explanation I posted above.

The whole issue is debatable and so many things depend on precedents, which in themselves might not be remarkable, but taken in conjunction with other developments, have lead to major breakthroughs

I don't recommend a breakthrough with glass. It would be clear to see it would be a pain.

well I said a tool,like a rock..

but the most important invention?

it is the computer...and it'll end up being something that might just be part of your body and mind. Some people think thats science fiction..I wager not, its in its infancy at present and really only being used as ways to aid disabled people(check the bionic eye for instance),but it'll at some point be consumer tech..

mobile phones, googleglass etc, will all look like ancient tech soon enough.
