Cambridge

There are a huge amount of military charities in the UK, some estimates put it at over 3,000. As such it can be difficult for those seeking assistance to find the charity that offers the right support that they need. I'm thinking about creating a website that lists all of them, and can act as a comparison site between then.

I know there are a lot of serving personnel, veterans and their families on Fab, so I thought I would ask for suggestions as to what to call it. Any ideas?

" First Contact"?

"Contact!"?

"The Rendezvous" ( or the RV)

"The ORBAT of charities"? Or

"The Military Charity ORBAT"

The royal British legion welfare officers do assessments for need and do sign posting the web site also has a sign posting section

I'd be careful as not all the charities set up have the ex forces and forces members in their best interest id say do a lot of research and contact SAAFA and the British legion for further advice. Before jumping in...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the RBL already do this (no doubt others like SSAFA do too). They're one of our clients and the people we pick up for them are put in touch with a massive array of specialist charities who look after specific areas of need, tailored towards ex-armed forces personnel.

Maybe the best name would be Forces Charities Directory (or similar). Says what it does on the tin!

Don't know if the MoD still have a charities liaison (cuts and the like). But I would write to the MoD press office explaining what you are intending to do and ask them if they have a list of charities that support service personnel, ex service personnel and their families. I expect they may be quite helpful.

You will find their are a lot of charities out there dedicated to the museums of single military units and the upkeep of pensioned of ships, planes and other memorabilia and I expect some of them will sound as if they support people rather than stuff...

I agree with posters above contact a charity such as the Royal British Legion and speak to them or the MOD press office. If you can get a contact at a local RAF or Army base that may well help you. There are several around Cambridgeshire, including the Peterborough area.

Let me know if it's an idea you decide to continue and expand on, I'd be very interested in it.

It sounds like a good idea, as someone else has said many small charities or organisations help specific regiments so your list may become extensive depending on whether you want to go into so much detail. It's also worth looking into their status for all charities with the charities commission, I have experience with both that and military if you ever want to pm me.

Thanks for the offer

The regimental funds are grant making organisations, rather than caseworking organisations. So if someone wanted assistance from them, they would be told to contact SSAFA or TRBL. So I wasn't intending in including them. Also people have either served in one regiment or they haven't. So if someone served in the RLC, but the reviews are better for the Royal Engineers, they cant decide to ask them for money instead.
