Just come across an older lady with a flat tyre, she'd been sitting there for 20 mins and no one stopped to she if she was ok. Tyre changed in 10 mins and she's away, are we all that busy that we can't stop

I got stuck last year halfway up Kirkton Pass... a lovely couple stopped to help me after they had gone past and came back.

He couldn't get my wheel nuts off either.

Sadly people are afraid to stop and help others for fear of being accused of something.

Plus all these scare mongering stories about people pretending..

Personally I think it's down to the fact that many people driving cars haven't a clue how to change a spare wheel these days and lots just don't want to get their hands dirty.

Well done you for being a good person and stopping.

I always stop to help but have noticed it normally helps if I'm in car not using motorcycle that seems to make people more nervous

I have too... alas in the middle of nowhere with no signal, it's trickier to get them to respond.

"I tend to stop for bikers but not cars don't ask me why "

Last time I stopped for a car the had run out of oil and expected me to take them to a petrol station. Hmm 3 miles to next exit, 5 miles to the previous one, so 16 miles plus finding the petrol station all with a passenger with out a skid lid - erm no chance. They didn't half kick up a stink because I politely declined. Not stopped for a car since.

Not forgetting that many cars don't have a spare wheel at all now ( not even the space saver type) . Some just have a can of that aerosol goo that you pump into the tyre instead.

So you use that if you have a relatively minor puncture, otherwise it's phone/ credit card or breakdown card.

In was in London for remembrance Sunday and found a old gentleman stood in the middle of a busy foot path with a glazed look. I stood to one side and watched him for a minute the. Wandered over and asked if he was ok, he said he'd lost his hotel. No problem took him by the arm and walked him around the corner and handed in to the hotel doorman. It took me 3 minutes and zero worry or stress worrying about him later

I know how to change a tyre,I physically can't now so I would call the AA. I worry about a burst tyre on a motorway as that happened once, when my husband was driving. I'm so glad it wasn't me,I might have killed us.

Sadly I can top that... I was driving down a quite narrow Street and seen a old bloke lay face down in the gutter. I stopped and started helping him up sat him on my bonnet dazed and blood running down his forehead. Some young kid pulled up in his souped up peace of shit behind me beeping and swearing at me to move. To cut a long story short the poor old guy wasn't the only person bleeding that day.

Ah poo, just realised I have everything I need in the car to whip a wheel off, except for a jack - guess it's a good job the car doesn't have a spare, aaaah forgot that bit as well.

Being able to change a spare should be implemented into the driving test , as should being able to keep your vehicle in a road worthy condition , ie get the thing serviced regular

I know the basics and could have changed my own wheel but the feckin wheel nuts were rammed on so tight I hadn't a hope in hell. I got the garage to do them all manually and I bought a longer brace for next time it happens (which will hopefully be never!)

If you drive a vehicle knowing how to jack it up and change a wheel is the very least you should know.

Did this last year saw a little old dear sat with her hazards on outside the village. Got the village garage out to tow her and they took her 40 miles homes without charging her. One of the reasons I always put my cars through there pays to shop local.

She came back a week later and dropped wine and chocolates off for everybody bless her.

Old school

Highway code says:

If you have a flat tyre, stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Only change the tyre if you can do so without putting yourself or others at risk – otherwise call a breakdown service.

So not illegal, but not advised.

I've done it once on the Motorway when the hard shoulder was in use, but rolled to an emergency layby off the hard shoulder. It was offside rear, which went at about 90mph in the outside lane.

Changing it with trucks steaming past scared the shit out of me and I don't think I'd chance it again without having cover from the traffic officers or police.

Stopped many times in the distant past, to help people - but nowadays, everyone has got mobile phones, so can easily call for assistance.

NeverWhere

My old man had me doing the drivers checks on Trucks and driving 3 ton fork trucks at 6 years old and changing truck wheels at 10 years old.

Its not hard to do with the correct tools and its a basic skill that all drivers should have.

I agree that you have to consider your own personal safety and call for assistance if you think its too dangerous or you are not happy with the location. I think that doing a wheel change on Motorways is one of the most dangerous thing that most people will ever do in their lives.

Problem is, especially with some elderly folk (or people with bad backs etc), they no longer have the strength required to get the tyre out or in some cases, undo the wheel nuts. Have helped out several times over the years. However, added to that are the increasing number of cars that don't have a spare (from new). Not a requirement to carry one ....

"Just come across an older lady with a flat tyre, she'd been sitting there for 20 mins and no one stopped to she if she was ok. Tyre changed in 10 mins and she's away, are we all that busy that we can't stop"
. I have stopped to help various people in the past but am reluctant to do so now for a number of reasons, one of which is personal safety , and the other is the breakdown could be a decoy to trap you . In any event anyone with a car should.be a member of one of the breakdown organisations, regardless of their age .

On two occasions when I helped push stationery vehicles on to the hard shoulder of either a dual carriageway or motorway , despite asking the vehicles in the outside land to remain stationery unto I was back in mine , they still moved before I had returned , and it was dangerous having to cross traffic lanes to get to mine . Even the traffic on the inside lane moved making it even more difficult .

Recently I helped push a lady who had broken down to a more secure position .. Despite asking her to remain in the vehicle to steer it and use brakes she got out . Luckily she managed to get back in before it ran into the back of another stationery vehicles .

If helping other drivers ,I would urge caution to be used . In addition not everyone appreciates your help.

Well done to the original poster for assisting . However should the lady in question not have phoned her breakdown organisation instead of expecting members or the public to take risks .

You Dont Need to Know, right now

OP, well done for stopping. I'm one of the slackers who has no idea how to change a wheel, so if I get a flat, I hope someone nice like you comes along and helps me out.

And double well-done to Mr Manx for helping elderly confused person back to their hotel.

If everyone was too concerned to help out a fellow human when they were in trouble, that would be a sad world.

Running with Monkeys

I'm a tyre fitter so it comes natural to me, I've stopped and put people's spare wheels on more than once, one woman on a country road wasn't too happy I'd stopped but she felt a little more at ease when she realised I was in my work uniform... Helped a guy who had just got back from a deployment in Iraq, he knew how to change it just hadn't in a long time, but since I stopped anyway I did it and he was away in less than 5 minutes
