Although I`ve a keen interest in palaeotology..I can`t really see the point of Geography...it hasn`t really benefited my life much since leaving school.....as interesting as subduction might be.....

I think giving kids a lesson in say ....relationships..or philosophy would benefit them far more....

What do you think ?..an open question ...

My lad's doing a Geography GCSE paper today, and he was moaning this morning that it's all about things like tourism in the Maldives.. as he was going out the door he said 'anyway, where IS the Maldives?' Good luck to him on that Geography exam

I have an o level in 'classics in translation' - basically we studied The Iliad and some other classic texts and it was a literature exam. Not useful - but interesting

I think its important as alot of people get to understand different cultures through geography, travel is in my opinion one of the best ways to broaden the mind and see the bigger picture. Geography helped me when i wanted to go somewhere special for six months. I spent alot of time deciding where the best place was. I chose south africa in the end. It had it all

as a fairly recent school leaver i feel that geography around the uk would have been better. we spent ages learning about other countries ive no intention of ever going too

i also feel that british history would have been better and more detailed.

i for gcse took a subject called social and enviromental studdies that taught me about self employment, family life and parentin, money management, business, drugs and i thought it was by far the best thing i ever did

Geography - if translated literally means landmapping but it's so much more.

Understanding our place , as Earth, in the universe.

Demographics. Why people move from one place to another.

Land formation. Soils and what will or wont grow in them.

There's far too much to it for me to remember or explain BUT I do know that people with geographical knowledge are much sort after......

They have insights into what is lacking or needed in most countries.

They are good at statistics

They understand why certain populations behave the way they do and how much of our lives is goverened by enviroment.

They can help with vital things such as knowing if materials ,buildings etc are going to withstand the weather of the area they are built in.

They know about economics, gross products, national products, livelihoods etc

They are sought in many industries. Geography isn't just knowing capital cities.

I dont think it matters so much what the subject is to be truthful

i learnt more in the subjects i enjoyed, even it doesnt have much 'practical' purpose in the big wide world, id still have felt id learnt more than do crap in a subject deemed worthwile.

make sense?

take art, not really practical but i loved it and achieved 'A*'.. French on the otherhand i didnt like so much and got a 'C'

Every time I go for a long drive and look around at the scenery or see an aerial view on TV I say to myself "oh look, an ox-bow lake".

So yes, Geography is a regular and important part of my life I would feel deeply unhappy without.

Depends on how it's taught, no one is interested in learning long lists of terminology unless they are going to specialise.

It is however closely linked to the people who inhabit the geography and their culture in that respect it is extremely interesting.

Other applications can be commercial, oil, gold, diamonds, phosphates, coal, possible crops, or preventative, drought, flood, earthquake, volcanic activity etc. There are surely many more uses also.

Thats because they are taught to pass exams

Parents want to send their kids to the best school... demand some sort of measurement ... government introduces league tables .... failing schools are closed ... schools teach to the test and introduce pointless GCSE (media studies, health and social care etc).

Therefore blame the parents

When I left school you were considered bright if you did 5 'O'levels, 6 and you were a child genius.

My son will leave school this summer with 14!!!!!!

Personally I think you should learn as much as you can, and get in to the habit of learning as much as you can, keep an open mind, I had an average education at a normal school ,looking back it wasn’t till after I left school that I started to learn. Ever day can be a school day if you keep an open mind and ask the right questions.

I don't know how much geography has changed these days in school but when I was taught it was far more than knowing where places were. You learned about different time zones and world seasons and climate, orienteering, imports and exports of commodities leading to basic economics, population, geology, how the world was formed etc etc. I just think it was one of those subjects that has been extremely useful throughout life.

Queer isn`t it ....Geography fer us, was more about how volcanoes were built...mantles etc....or longshore drift....just geology really ..

Never broadened out into anything else ....

We did enviromental studies as a seperate subject .....

I can remember all the class, splitting into trio`s and going out into the chicken run ...catching a chicken ...wringing its neck....dressing and cooking it..and then eating it .....a valuable lesson ...

Geography was a throw away subject tho really ....how about ...RE.....

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

The best thing a teacher can give a child is an inquisitiveness and an interest in the world that builds into a lifetime of self-improvement.

If learning about fjord creation is how they achieve that, that's fine by me.

My inspirational teachers were mad as hatters but we still remember them. One used to stand on the bench in physics with the shell of an old telivision in his arms. He would drop it to introduce the subject of gravity. Certainly got our attention. The chemistry teacher would ask us what the chemical symbol for salt was. We would say S-O sir. No he would boom Esso is the sign of happy motoring. I still think of him when I see an esso logo!
