I was thinking today about what it would be like to completely change my "look" for one day. What I mean is, it would be interesting to wear clothes and do my makeup completely differently than how I usually do and to see what affect, if any, it has on the way people interact with me.

I don't mean drastic changes, just small things. For example, I don't often wear makeup and I tend to dress conservatively. So I might try putting on a bit more makeup and showing a little more skin. That kind of thing.

Have any of you ever done this? Are you willing to try? And do you think it will in fact change how you are treated?

so near and yet so far....

I have had my make up done at a beauty counter just to see how others perceive what looks good... I don't wear make up much so to me I just felt "overdone"

Always fun to take friends with you clothes shopping so you don't always go for similar/samey clothes...

Yeah, it's an interesting experiment.

For instance in previous years to an annual black tie event in my industry I've always worn feminine clothes (including trousers suits). It's a hard sector for women - and women often struggle to be taken seriously because it's technology based and traditionally male dominated.

This year I wore men's clothes (trousers, men's shirt, waistcoat, tie, etc). I came away from the evening with probably five or six times the amount of business cards and contacts that I usually would, about four grands worth of additional business (that I've never managed before), and the general feeling that I was being taken an awful lot more seriously.

I mean, it's not conclusive evidence. But...

An example at work. Wearing jeans, people see me in the corridor and act like I'm a nobody. Then get a shock when I'm in the same meeting as them later in the day...

if I wear a lovely dress I pass largely unnoticed unless I'm wearing evening makeup. Bright lipstick etc.

In a club I seem to draw a fair amount of attention but it's respectful and I'm treated as a lady.

If I put a micro skirt and cropped top or bra top on it changes dramatically. I get stared at. Guys seem unable to keep their hands to themselves.

It's quite fun though. I enjoy being centre of attention.

I have always had a fairly clean cut look, but I don't feel or act square at all...I would love to look really 'sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll...if only temporarily...ideally I would grow my hair into long silver dreads and take on a kind of Lenny Kravitz persona...lol

At one point I switched between blonde bombshell, purple goth bob and brown mid length hair. I don't think I got treated much differently although some people didn't recognise me!

It's something I am trying to consciously do. People do react differently to you if you wear certain sorts of clothes or have a different hairdo. I think more importantly it can change the way you act yourself. It can really help to give you a boost in confidence. Hence the reason why I'm trying it.

I wear jeans, fluffy jumpers, long baggy shapeless clothes normally.

So on goes the whiteface, the 20+ facial piercings, the chains, the multicolour hair gets styled and set, the corset and heels to change my silhouette, posture and stride.

And this makes me marmite love/hate. strangers will tell me they love my style. That something about me is pretty. That I'm a fucked up freak who mutilated their face - why did I do this to myself?

Boring me passes through and maybe gets some mutters. Dressed up me gets lots of attention, sneaky photographs, people nudging and doing double takes, and the odd brave soul will actually talk to my face. Unfortunately still get the odd nutter who screams abuse from the other side of the road, but they seem to be dying out.

How i dress depends on my mood. Most days im conservative. Weekends agaun deoends somedays im full on rock goth lol.

My makeup is always the same though i prefer a natural look. On a night out all i add is a light eyeshodow.

if i go to supermarket in a top that shows a bit - wiggle this arse of mine a bit and make eye contact more i get a few smiles - more fun than trudging round in my jeans and baggy jumper - so yes small changes do make a difference

No, they did not think I am a man. I am distinctly feminine in my appearance, and that's something I can't change. I have long hair, a feminine facial structure, was wearing heels, have a female voice, and introduce myself by my female Christian name.

Yes here was funny. Some people i talked to a lot id never exchabged face pics with then one friday i swapped with a lot of forumites. Severaal said not what i expected. For some reason they thought id be grungey?? Id say they warmed to me and were more friendly after. In day to day life. People seem to react differently if im in full work business dress. Less rude more smiles. Whereas if im having a jeans and tshirt day although im not scruffy people guve me funny looks when i smile at them.

Maybe thats just me i smile at everyone xx

My work style is kind of feminine-smart, pencil skirts, dresses, heels. If I was slim I'd like to try wearing more masculine tailoring and see if there was any effect on reactions to me at work, but I'm all boobs, stomach and bum so I just look shit in those styles.

A couple of years ago my hair was as long as yours Courtney, I went and got it cut extremely short. And got nothing but compliments. I don't think I would ever wear my hair long again.

My first wife was a nurse, being used to uniform at work her entire wardrobe was compartmentalised, outfits for farm work, biker chick, gym, and 3 different sets of "going out" clothes, casual, smart, and stripper was her description.

and yes she did notice and enjoy the differences.

Marc saw a picture of me yesterday. It was my high school graduation where I cut my hair to my chin. He passed by the pic without realising it was me in it

I've considered cutting it all off but I think Marc would leave me if I did.

I was much sportier then and guys definitely treated me differently.

I felt self-conscious of my legs. I haven't worn an above ankle skirt or dress since God knows when,my legs went into shock.

I rarely wear make up and tan easily in summer. I've been considering having a fake tan done over winter and false eyelashes. I've only once had a fake tan for a party I was going to 5 years ago and have never tried fake eyelashes. I could end up looking like I've been tangoed with manky eyes.

Now you've got me thinking again that I might try both - just to see how it makes me feel. Best check my bank balance first though !

I'd consider myself pretty lucky!

If I want to be ignored then I go out make-up free in loose clothing.

When I wear more fitting clothes (only 'tarty' if in a swingers club/party though) and do my hair and make-up (not heavily made up - just not for me) I get a lot of appreciative glances and smiles - and if I'm in shops/offices etc interacting with guys then they seem far more eager to be helpful!

Friends and family treat me the same - they KNOW what I really look like!

I never wear trousers, but I turned up at my daughter's school recently wearing jeans and I was shocked at how many mums noticed and commented.

When I dyed my red hair blonde (a good few years ago) I altered my make up and the colours I wore - more pinks and pastels as they suited my 'new' look. Friends preferred ginger me and I felt more girly than womanly...I was noticed less and received fewer compliments and attention in public too. Wasn't long before I had it restored to my natural colour and I've never looked back

A girl I used to go to college with was very goth. One day she came in in a pastel jumper, jeans, trainers and natural make up. She did it as an experiment. It was odd. People didn't recognise her.

I don't feel like I can change my look much. I could take my piercings out but they'd close up!

Shaved my moustache off ( I had it for 20 years) and everyone at work said

" have you lost weight? "

or "That's strange, you are taller than I remember"

Or " that new hairstyle suits you".

Or " have you got new glasses?"

Only about 1 in 10 actually noticed that the moustache had gone.

My different me is when we go out somewhere special or we've got a meet. Then I'll give my legs an airing, well from the knee down.

I like to do it to add a little relief, some colour to the day. Going from hot chick to secretary/business woman or a style I'll pick out from a film or to be stupid. It is very interesting and you get a feel for your power to influence others, even if you chose to behave the same.

When I was a little kid I was inspired by challenges that were difficult ot 'shouldn't' be done - so I could do them and break my own rules. It's great to step outside and away from your ritual self.

Sometimes wanting to be noticed, sometimes wanting to 'hide'? As in people will avoid you when you look that way.

A while ago I decided to change my look a little so I've been incorporating more 50's inspired styles & have noticed it's a good way of striking up a conversation with other people. Women in particular will compliment & ask where a dress / bag etc is from or how I do my hair.

Positive outcome for me having a change

My whole appearance has changed and I am treated completely different by men and women.

Thought it was all in my mind to start with but its not.

I still wouldn't wear low cut tops or lots of makeup but it seems I don't need to.
