Ok, so imagine you were given the opportunity to go back and study something of your choice (and money and time weren't preventing it). What would you choose?

It can be either something practical, like learning how to fix cars or how to cook, or something impractical, like a PhD in philosophy.

Go on, what do you wish you could learn more about if you had to choose one thing?

I'm a mum and work but also on university. I do like by acquiring a student loan. It's not a bad debt at all. You only ever pay it back once you're earning 21k or more per year. Then at 21k you're only paying back something little as £20 a week. After you're qualified in whatever subject you're earning 35k or above min!! So £20 a week is nothing. Also once you're 60 or 65 years old and still owe any money, your student debt is wiped off. They simply don't want you going into old age in debt. I'm half way to 60 already so I'm not worried about student loan debt lol!

Remember you're never too old to learn new skills! Good luck hunny. X

Yes, so we should learn those languages instead of useless Latin with rude mean teachers who don't understand that not everyone can translate Virgil's Aeneid on the spot and that maybe some students are better at politics and math.

I did both of those, and Latin has probably been more useful in helping me work things out and understand the root of words. If you're going to just do a little bit of something (e.g. to GCSE level, not actual fluency level) I think a little bit of Latin is far more useful than a little bit of any other language. Obviously being completely fluent in a second modern language to your native tongue would be more helpful in life though.

If you have learned Latin, then you have learned and understand all the grammar needed for any info-European language, and can also understand the structure of many others.

Plus Between 30 and 60% of words in European languages have a Latin origin.

I can quickly pick up words in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, some German, and others, due to knowing Latin. ( and often link them to a similar English word).

That was my thinking. Not that I continued and became fluent. I was at school in the late 80's and I though German might be a good thing to start learning from an international business perspective.

It didn't work out like that. It turns out I have little aptitude for languages. Of course, I didn't know that for a while after I had to make the choice.

I'd rather have done Latin.

Catthorpe

A university history lecturer. Was well on my way then love struck. No regrets, met the best person I have ever known and I still managed a very, very good job.

Him - I would study nursing so I could specialise in pediatric nursing.

Her - animal welfare or some zoo keeping course so she could work with the big cats

Wish I'd follow my dream and carried on studying Psychology.

I got a taste for it when taking my diploma in welfare and wanted to carry it on but I had a partner who thought "a woman your age is too old to study, and should be out there looking for a job to support her family"

Gutted now I didn't carry on with my studies.

"Either veterinary surgery or marine biology.

The career prospects for Marine Biology graduates are very limited.

Jimi BSc (Hons) Marine and Freshwater Biology.

I almost changed degree courses to Mycology so possibly that.

To become a pilot. I spent the last 18 years (give or take) flying around the world on business (lots of it in business class). I'd love to be able to do the flying for a change!

I know, but the question stated if money and time wasn't an issue.

I'd do it purely as something I'm interested in.

A world of my own

I'm lucky I'm working towards my dream job now. Though open uni is hard going. And even getting my diploma in psychosexual therapy this year doesn't get me close enough yet. If I could afford it id give up work and go to do my psychology degree full time at University x

"Ok, so imagine you were given the opportunity to go back and study something of your choice (and money and time weren't preventing it). What would you choose?

It can be either something practical, like learning how to fix cars or how to cook, or something impractical, like a PhD in philosophy.

Go on, what do you wish you could learn more about if you had to choose one thing?

-Courtney "

I'd love to play the piano and guitar.

Seperately not simultaneously of course.

"Latin or maybe Ancient Greek.

If I could wake up tomorrow and unlearn all the Latin I know it wouldn't be soon enough.

-Courtney

Noooo I loved Latin. It's just so logical

Most of the European words are derived from it

Yes, so we should learn those languages instead of useless Latin with rude mean teachers who don't understand that not everyone can translate Virgil's Aeneid on the spot and that maybe some students are better at politics and math.

Excuse me while I

-Courtney

Goodness Courtney - you just brought back terrible memories for me of being bawled at by a red faced, hairy-eyebrowed Dr Schnall for not being able to objectify the differences between the Browning and McNeice translations of Agamemnon. I hated Classics!!

I like classics....after someone else has translated them for me "

Me too I sucked at Latin but loved the Classical texts.

I would have chosen Illustration, Graphic Design or Egyptology

I recently took a course to learn how to decorate cakes as I fancied learning something new and totally different from IT. If I had the money I would love to do an MBA.

The right place

Neuroscience. So much is being discovered and yet there is still so much more we don't know. It's a fascinating time to study the brain.

Once I've finished my MRes and PhD in History of Art, I'm hoping to go back and do a degree in a STEM subject to compliment my research. I'm not sure which one yet, but almost certainly something to do with computer science.
