Being referred to as a "female."

It really niggles me... not in everyday conversation, but in sexual situations - I noticed it while watching Dogging Tales (don't judge me ) last night & I notice it on here quite a bit too. It just comes across to me as objectification.

It *is* objectification. It's referring to someone as a female animal, not a human woman.

I don't understand how identifying the sex of someone is objectifying them? Why isn't it classification?

but some think lady is objectifying women as the weaker sex. So you can't have the word lady.

We should all just be called things.

I agree, it's just a term to denote gender, same goes for male.

Obviously if there is some pejorative context, that is different, but then the same would apply to any other gender label such as woman or man.

V here.

"Female" is a scientific term that refers to the sex of a species that is capable of producing children. The term "woman" refers specifically to human beings, while "female" could refer to any species.

I dislike "lady" but that's just my personal opinion. Lady is a title.

Sorry but not with you on this one! Very few of the 'little things' in life offend me - which is why I'm usually so happy!

Really can't see how the word female is offensive to anyone - unless a male gets called one!

Eh? Of all the people to muddle sex and gender, I never thought it would be you!

OP your sex is female, your gender is for you to define.

I was brought up that a 'woman' worked whereas a 'lady' didn't. If one was unsure one could never go wrong by calling someone a 'lady' - but there have been threads on here even complaining about that. Basically, men can't win.

Just to make a point... I only don't like being called a female where sexual activity is concerned... Ie say, if someone says that they want to have sex with a female, or if someone says that they want to go out to meet females for sex, THAT is what sets my teeth on edge.

Other terms, such as female students or female workers and so on, I'm fine with.

"It *is* objectification. It's referring to someone as a female animal, not a human woman."

You can't simply denigrate a word - because in doing so you risk a precedent for other terms and meanings to be equally dismissed or treated in a derogatory fashion by those who don't agree with them. Certain groups in society are co-opting words for their own devises almost daily - should we decry them their use?

Context is everything. It doesn't have to be the word, but how you wield it that matters.

neither for me its just my title seriously, it might get to the stage where a guy has to be given a check list before he talks to someone of the opposite sex so they know who !likes and doesn't like what.

There was a new one on here the other day that someome was offended by that I hadn't heard before

I guess the things that uopset some people are pretty insignificant to others,I would be more pissed off if someone were abusive to a female (oops I mean a girl/woman/lady/xx chromosome person) that if someone were to refer to them as female whether in a sexual or non sexual way but everyone has their own tolerance level some are set lower than others.

I'm going to be utterly shit woth trying to explain this... bear with me.

I feel like it's quite a cold clinical way to refer to as a woman, almost a detached way - and, on Fab, I don't mean detached in an unattached NSA way, I mean detached way as in no emotional or mental connection, as in the untitled female is below the person who they're having sex with... if that makes sense?

'Lady' as in 'Lord' IS a title.

'lady' (no capital) as in 'gentleman' isn't.

Because in and of itself, the term is a simple label to denote gender.

It's you that is projecting your perception of the intent of its usage.

I feel like it's quite a cold clinical way to refer to as a woman, almost a detached way - and, on Fab, I don't mean detached in an unattached NSA way, I mean detached way as in no emotional or mental connection, as in the untitled female is below the person who they're having sex with... if that makes sense?

What about if you're using the term as a means of gender identity?

As I've previously mentioned on this thread, that doesn't bother me."

So, not the word. Just the context then.

Nothing related to this but I have a kind of word phobia over a certain word, I go hot cold start sweating and feel sick when I hear it. Unfortunatly its a very common word and I have to try and find ways of dealing with it.

Maybe try and find out why it makes you feel how you do.

Like I said in my previous post, its how its termed when differentiating between the sexes.

we could say equal amounts of males and females use fab,but if I said lots of women use fab as well as males or vice versa, then I think that would be some sort of derogatory view on men.

I'd say guys/men and women/girls in lots of cases..I think I wouldnt use language that refers to them in a more scientific manner.Likewise I'd never say I'm really wanting to lick a vagina, I'd say pussy....but I know cats find this offensive too.

And there you have it. You have a negative association with the term which you project on to it. There's nothing wrong or pejorative about the word itself, just your perception of it.

You can't really expect the whole world to change because of your negative experience.

Female on forms is correct as it is usually paired with male.... Male/female. If it was "man" then the accurate pairing would be "woman".

I would guess that if he doesn't see them as sentient beings, the issue goes beyond semantics."

I'm quite sure he does have some awareness of the fact women are sentient beings, but his manner of conveying his wishes suggests not the human variety.

Discourse is an important part of how we connect with some people and not others. Personally I avoid those who simply wish to fuck 'A. Female'. As ever, context is everything.

On here where people regularly refer to male profiles, the male or female of an MF couple? Absolutely no problem referring to me as a female in that context. In most others it just makes me think of the dad in Friday Night Dinners. And he amuses me. So no issue here. Obviously, I would prefer to be referred to as a fellow human being and member of the distaff element but that's not going to happen, plus it's a bugger to type.

"So I'm guessing the general consensus is with a few exceptions "suck it up" it's only a word."

Or "use it as a filter".

If someone speaks in a way you're not comfortable with, you're probably not going to be comfortable meeting and playing with them.

Personally, when men refer to a "female" and it sounds as though they are just looking for a warm object with the requisite holes, rather than a person, it puts me off. If it doesn't sound like that, no problem.

If men feel female is the right way to express what they mean and accept it may put some women off, fair enough.

It's just another of the ways we can use to work out who we may get along with and who we probably won't.

Over the years I've heard women object to female, girl, lady, bird, chick and all sorts of other terms. Using "woman" seems safest to me, since that definitely denotes a human, female person.

A "female" could be a dog, a duck, a holly bush...

"Female" describes as aspect of me but it doesn't necessarily mean a person.

Interestingly the word 'female' has its own distinct derivation, totally separate from the word 'male' whereas 'woman' isn't separate from the word 'man', and is instead linked to the word 'wife', with its connotations of 'ownership'.

That said, let's face it, that whole documentary, with the animal masks, was a bit odd. I was always disapponted that they didn't have a beaver...

"On here where people regularly refer to male profiles, the male or female of an MF couple? Absolutely no problem referring to me as a female in that context. In most others it just makes me think of the dad in Friday Night Dinners. And he amuses me. So no issue here. Obviously, I would prefer to be referred to as a fellow human being and member of the distaff element but that's not going to happen, plus it's a bugger to type."

"It really niggles me... not in everyday conversation, but in sexual situations - I noticed it while watching Dogging Tales (don't judge me ) last night & I notice it on here quite a bit too. It just comes across to me as objectification."

Female is too generic and lacks intimacy. I know that (most) people on here are looking for NSA fun and friendship but I prefer to have sex with a woman not a female

"So I'm guessing the general consensus is with a few exceptions "suck it up" it's only a word."

I think we should "suck it up" in the same way all those dudes who use it should "suck it up" that no one will then meet with them.

Technically 'the same' would be telling men they shouldn't mind being called men, males, blokes, guys, boys, lads, dudes, etc. But then, generally, it never seems to be an issue. Admittedly the first time a bloke called me "mi-duck" I was a bit , but I soon grew accustomed to it.

I honestly don't believe this is sexism, just an honest inability to see the issue. (Especially when there is no general consensus amonst women)

Oh, no, my comment wasn't one supporting the sexism bit of this.

Just pointing out that when people say "suck it up" it generally means "you shouldn't complain about this, you must accept that this is OK, and your objections are pointless". Which is exactly what I want to say to the dudes who use the term but then complain they have no meets.

Sure, use it if you want, no one can tell you you can't (just like no one can tell us not to be offended by it), but just accept the consequences of your actions (i.e. women not wanting to meet you because you sound like a fuckboi. Lol).

I don't mind at all being called female.

I'm more insulted when I get called a lady because I'm definitely not a lady, I fart, burp, drink pints not halfs, live in trainers everything a lady shouldn't do x

There's definitly times when men using 'female' comes across as 'thing I want to fuck' (whether they intend it to or not).

It can be a bit dehumanising in some circumstances.

It's dehumanising... it's referring to a woman as an animal. Even, as an object.

It also often indicates when people don't have such a good grasp of how to use English. It's either poor language skills or deliberate dehumanisation - and both of those things are pretty unsexy to me.

Actually "the same" would be referring to men as "males".

"Men" is the same as "women" - i.e. they are humans who happen to be men.

"Males" is the same as "females" - i.e. they are objects/things/animals who carry the data needed to fertilize the female version of themselves.

I have received messages which have said something along the lines of 'the fem is gorgeous' or similar type of thing. Im not keen on it, my name is on my profile and I do think it's very impersonal.

"How are all the lovely female fabbers tonight?"

Think you're missing the point. Female as an adjective rather than female as a noun. "Hi female fabbers" is different from "hi females".

the way I hear it, when its obviously a derogative term is(picture the scene):-

A group of gentlemen scholars are discussing the implications of using random light technology particle accelerates.A maid overhears and comes up with a radical suggestion. The men obviously ridicule her in their pomposity by uttering something like:-

"Scientific discovery is a mans world, a female should know her place"

Hardly,I am merely showing the absurdity of first world problems such as being called being castigated as "objectifying" especially when posted on a swingers site,I do think the human female has more to worry about than being called female in a supposedly derogatory way.

I'm not offended by it, I just think it makes the addresser sound a bit cunty. Not something that overly bothers me.

And yes, you did miss the point, by saying something entirely different to what the thread is actually about.

Theres plenty of women that refering them to a animal would insult the animal. Rose west. M hindley to name 2

Pro nouns should be wielded carefully , they can very easily turn into diminutive patriarchal slurs.. That demean and put at ill ease..

It's ignorance in most cases rather than intentional.. Assuming the laat thing any ordinary decent guy wants to do is come across as an insulting misogynist. Unfortunately society is still very centred around stereotypes and gender roles, especially between the sheets when primal behaviours come into play.

Know what you mean though. Xx.
