I have never been to one of these stores, are they like a BQ store that you can walk around, or are they mainly suppliers for the building trade ?

cool I am planning a back garden makeover, looking for some idea's some nice patio slabs and a nice stone for a retaining wall.

They mainly supply companies but are open to the public inside the store you can shop around but for things such as cement plaster timber and bricks you have to pay 1st and then go to the yard where some guy will check your ticket/receipt and get you what you need. I personally would stick to b&q or even wickes but if you're looking for tools go to tool station

i'm unsure if they show prices, I might be wrong??

Also, trade accounts get cheaper through cash cards, etc... just stick to b&Q IMO

Jewsons, travis perkins etc are generally trade accounts but will serve public with inflated prices, B&Q is overpriced crap unless its branded (gypsum, marley etc) travis perkins supply a good range of pavers etc for gardens so id go for them, they have just realeased a new catalouge for garden supplies...

I'm not bothered who owns it, I just like the fact I don't have to wander around for weeks trying to find M6 screws.

I've found Jewsons to be ok but always barter! The reason being is that they seem to dream up any old price! Make sure you look at how much something should cost. Don't just go in and buy without checking out prices first.

Jewsons owned by wickes, basically the same stuff. It's a builder's merchant's and branches vary in size and stock.

Travis perkins is pretty much the same.

They are all pretty much a muchness tbh price's vary as does quality

Why are you asking?

Are you going to be building a large project or just some diy?

Just interested what they sell?

Builders merchants nowadays are much friendlier than they used to be but, as said earlier, the prices are extreme unless you know what's reasonable and barter.

If you're going to do a large project, tell them. Open an account and barter every price. They then set that price against your account.. They call it 'terms'. You then pay that price every time you buy that product. Keep a keen eye on the price though as they sometimes put them up when they think you won't notice.

if your not a regular they may try it on, some of the don't have prices on stock and will see what they can get away with..

b&q is way pricey for stuff. wickes is pretty cheap for bagged materials like sand and cement but costly for other stuff. look at prices online at wickes and then go to the local builders merchants with a list and get the list quoted. shop around ..... local independent builders merchants can be cheaper. be pleasant when you speak to the guys, ask for their advice on stuff, don't be vague and when you get to the part when they've totted up the price just ask "is there any chance we can squeeze the price down".

if you're doing a garden go to reclaimation yards. they tend to have all sorts of cool stuff and keep looking in skips for bits that might be useful. don't be scared to knock on doors to ask if you can take stuff out of the skip.

As you're in Brum, I'd suggest checking out Carvers in Wolverhampton and Darlastin Builders Merchants, which is not far from Chams, if you wanted to combine it with trying to lay more than a patio

it's a DIY job, but quite a big one, my back garden has been over grown for years, I have used a strong killer and killed off everything, and ripped it all out, I have to put up about 9 sections of panel fencing, build a retaining wall, then a patio area, and a grassed area, it should keep me busy for a while lol.
