If children turn up at school without dinner money or a packed lunch is it the schools responsibility to provide meals ?

Chances are the kids were given dinner money by the parents but chose to spend it elsewhere...nothing new there.

In the case of the parents not providing dinner money or a packed lunch then that's where the school should intervene.

Some school use pre-payment dinner cards where parents top up online and can see what the kids are buying.

My youngest is in primary, a few odd occasions he forgot his lunch and I couldn't take it in, the school provided a lunch for him and we pay the next day. His school you can pay daily if you wish.

The other two are in secondary school and if they forget their money or spend it (they top their key up at the start of the week) they go hungry, well moreso if they decide to spend their money, it's called a punishment!! But they now have pack lunch as they only get half hour for lunch and only one canteen so they got their food and never got a chance to eat it, so a waste of money imo

Depends, we used to just spend our dinner money but if its a genuine reason then yes and the parent pays back later.

Domt children get free meals until the and of seven anyway and parents on low income get them paid all the time?

Did the news story about the school that's said it was only going to provide bread and butter from now on and then had to apologise and retract prompt this post? They apparently had 100 children last month with no dinner money or packed lunch, not sure how big the school is but that's a lot of meals to supply out of an already stretched budget.

It's not new, my aunt was a teacher 50 years ago and it happened then too.

The duty of care lays firmly with the parent or carer if they aren't fulfilling that I think the school should step in and if it's needed notify the appropriate agency. I know of one case where dinner money was withheld as a punishment

Mine does and i get a note asking me to come to the office for a dressing down.. nah, just come in and pay for it. Kids wont go hungry.

It depends on the age of the child I would think. Whilst under no obligation to feed a child I doubt a primary school would let them go without finding something to eat. I doubt a secondary would even know x

If a child turns up at a train station without a ticket or money, is it the responsibility of the train station to give them a free ride?
