Yes, a couple of months a to one of my cats started to be unwell and was deteriorating by the hour next morning I took her to the vets and she was put to sleep.

She was old and didn't need to suffer.

I still am upset but they do it with such dignity, she may have only been a cat to some but the vet treated her with such dignity.

I think ultimately you have to take advice from your vet! It's hard, all you can do is the best by your pet.

Yes. I had to have my gorgeous bulldog put down due to cancer. He was struggling to eat, sleeping a lot and getting terribly upset if he had an accident in the house. It was the hardest decision I ever had to make but I knew it was the right one.

I would hope so.

The pets I have had who I have had to put down you could see that there was a change in them for the worse. As hard as it was I'm not going to knowingly allow them to suffer just so I can delay the grief of losing them.

It's when you're not sure if they are suffering or not that I struggle with. Finding that cut off point.

There is a guy at work with an old dog with kidney, joint, allergy (that include some things that are found in some of the medications she needs) etc. problems, from what he has said about her I would have put her down already but is he being selfish or can he see something in her that tells him she is still enjoying her life?

Definitely. I had to say goodbye to 2 within 3 months. It is without doubt the hardest thing to do. My vet was fantastic and we discussed all the options available, including scans & various medications which may have prolonged life for a while longer.

There was no hope of recovery (both very elderly pets) and any intervention would have been purely to prolong life. That would have only been for my benefit and selfish on my part. The "sparkle" had gone from their eyes and one in particular really had mobility problems.

The vet didn't bring up euthanasia - it has to be something the owner considers, and I suspect the reason for the discussion around potential treatments and likelihood of success was to lead me there.

Knowing it was the right thing to do didn't make it any easier at the time, but now some time has passed, I know it was right and if I'm honest, I should have had the discussion a lot earlier than I did.

It's never going to be an easy call for anyone but ultimately the owner knows their pet better than anyone.

You just know.. When it's time.

I would never keep a loved pet alive just to delay the grief.

I took the decision to have 2 cats put down within a few months of each other. Hardest decision but best for them.

Yep I agree everytime I've had to have a pet put to sleep it's been hard to do deep down you know though..

A cat adopted me, it's owner got a dog cat didn't like the new arrival and moved in with me about 2 1/2 years ago.. last week I took it to the vets it had a little lump on its toe, vet examined the cat thought it might be a tumour but she'd want to xray etc ... said as I wasn't the registered owner I couldn't authorise the treatment she couldn't treat it, so I contacted the owner who took it to the vets yesterdays and had it put to sleep, no contact with me to ask about it's well being, I only found out when I rang to arrange to pick him up ......

I think you do. We did. We had to say goodbye to our gorgeous 14 yr old Choccy lab, Tetley, 3 days before Christmas just gone. He had been throwing up for a while. Vet initially thought it was because being a lab he would wolf his food down too fast and his body couldn't cope, so we changed his eating habits. He was ok for a few weeks then one day he never got up. The next morning I took him to the vet where she diagnosed a tumour. It was decided there and then that we were not going to let him suffer and we needed to let him go. So I sat on the floor cuddled into him while he passed peacefully.

We miss him greatly, but it was his time.

I think it's the most difficult of choices and doesn't ever seem to be the right time.. I base it on the fact I love them so much I can't have then suffering and the vets advice! That's all I could say really but as mentioned. You will know

that is appalling behaviour.it must have left you very hurt and confused.

We had our cat for 16 years, hardest thing we had to do was put him to sleep, but his health had deteriorated quite quickly in his last days and was the best thing for him, miss him so much, yes it's a cat but was also part of the family, see, there's a soft inside to this hard exterior.

Yes but it's still never an easy thing to do.

Doesn't matter what the pet is, they're still part of the family and you come to love them.

I got really annoyed with a women when I had to take one of our pet rats to be put to sleep. She was disgusted when she saw me carry him in on a pillow and started moaning loudly to her partner how it shouldn't be allowed and who in their right mind would cry over a rat.

Of course. Doesn't make it an easy thing to do though.

Our 15 year old cat became very unwell one day and was rasping for breath - wouldn't stand up for long and wouldn't eat.

Turned out his lungs were filling up with fluid and he was essentially drowning in his own body.

Letting him die like that would've made us monsters.

Yep it was ... We'd had a conversation and agreed to go halves on the treatment, Tigger was his normal self eating well and from what I could see well and happy. Sleep well little man, you deserved better.

It might have been because they couldn't or wouldn't pay for the treatment or the results came back as worse than originally thought.

Unfortunately for the cat it's not actually any of your business so I'm not surprised you weren't contacted. It sucks that the cat may have missed out on the rest of its life if you had been contacted but it's not your cat so not your decision. To be honest, if I was in their situation it wouldn't have crossed my mind to go begging for money or to dump my ill cat on a random person, my cat = my responsibility.

Me and my late partner used to look after a spaniel for a friend of hers, the length of time we had it got longer and longer but when I said that I didn't want him all the time she collected him, took him to the vets and sent my lady a text saying she had put him to sleep. Fucking bitch.

Yes and it doesn't get any easier but as owners of pets its part of ones responsibility..

we had to do it again 3 weeks ago today and maybe because he was a young dog its been hard but we look back with gratitude for the good times and totally sure we did the right thing by him..
