... of potential neighbours stop you moving into a street ?

I overheard this conversation today : I am still flabbergasted that in this day and age people still hold these views.

I honestly believed we had moved on. How naive of me.

So the conversation went like this :

Woman 1 : So have you looked at new houses ?

Woman 2 : Yeah we saw a lovely house on that estate off xyz road

Woman 1 : So have you made any movement ?

Woman 2 : No, we had two viewings and the house was lovely, just what we needed. Then I started parking up at night and across the road I noticed there were a family of fuckin pakis

Woman 1 : Would you let that put you off ?

Woman 2 : Yeah it would. I mean they're like fkin cockroaches : once one lot moves in, give it 5 years and it'll be fkin infested and the houses will be worth nothing. It'll ruin that estate

I had to leave. Now I wish I hadn't. I wish I had stayed and had it out with her. I feel like I let myself down and I let 'decent' people down. It's played on my mind all afternoon.

I had a similar experience recently but it was at a funeral and I felt keeping mouth shut was for the best.

I've had it done to me when I lived in Australia, I was the token 'Pommy Bastard' luckily I wasn't in that neighbourhood for too long. It's a horrible feeling.

No, the guy over the road from my old house said he didn't want to sell it to any Asians. 2 years on, he still hasn't sold his house. I sold mine for full asking price in 3 days. To a lovely Asian couple. I hope he was furious

Race and religion of neighbours doesn't bother me in the slightest the only thing that'd bother me would be living somewhere where the residents don't care about anyone else who'd happily dump crap outside their house or let their dogs crap all over the place. And that can be any race, colour or creed.

You didn't let yourself down at all. People with these kind of horrible views wouldn't listen to anyone having it out with them and would see you as "too pc" etc. Let them continue to stew in their own hatred. Sooner or later karma will get them. As a society I think we are more inclusive now, but unfortunately it will take years for most of the old, intolerant, hard headed people to move on.

My little piece of road has an Irish family,a Caribbean family,myself and a Bangladeshi family all in a row. I would look at the garden and sit watch nightly,listening for loud music,I couldn't care less which race or religion they were. I was invited to my Muslim neighbour's daughter's wedding.

No. I grew up and went to school in an area that was predominantly Asian. I was one of 2 white children in my class at junior school. It really isn't something that i would even think about.

Felt I had to add my two pence to this one. I'm am estate agent ,please don't hate me, and I have to admit that there is some truth to what was said. Where I work there are certain streets and areas where the only people buying properties are Asian, and the house prices are lower than surrounding areas. However I think this is more of a historical thing as many Asian families tend to be large and close and so you will find that brothers, sisters, cousins etc will all want to live close to each other.

On a personal note though makes no difference to me who I live next to as long as they are good, considerate people.

. If choosing an area in which to live , I would prefer to have neighbours with a similar background and status.

Having living in a few different areas , I feel happier and safer in an area where the residents fall into the socio economic category A status and are of a similar status .and religion to myself .

However it is unacceptable to express to preferences in a racist manner .

We looked at a house in an area, we were put off by the 2 massive England flags flying in the back garden of one of the neighbours. It turns out that the people living there aren't the football mad people that we thought they were, it was a lesbian couple that fly the flag to stop Pakistani families from buying the house. Either way so glad we never bought the place.

Then there's my experience: in case you didn't know I'm black.

I'm taking early retirement in October and looking to move out of London, city of my birth. One of my colleagues leaves next week and I was excitedly telling her about my plans. I mentioned areas I could afford to live mortgage free when she and another white colleague said I was to consider I didn't want to go somewhere where there weren't many black people and not a diverse mix as I wouldn't be happy or feel safe in these racist areas.

Never crossed my mind I wouldn't be welcome in some parts of England, looks like I'll be staying in the south east then.

A few years ago i lost my mother she left me her house we put it up for sale then out the blue got a phone call from the house next door.This man i had never spoken to said he was worried about the house some Asians had been looking in at it he asked me not to sell the house to Asians. Me and my husband lived 200 miles away from my mother i asked this man when my mother was ill she lived on her own my farther had been dead a few years did he ever cut her lawn do any thing for her he said no i said how does fuck off sound never heard from him again

I guess to a Londoner I'm from "up north" and live in a fairly rural location - I can honestly say hand on heart that as a general rule people around here are surprisingly accepting and welcoming of anyone. You may be pleasantly surprised by the reception you get elsewhere so don't write off your plans just yet. Maybe arrange viewings and see what kind of reception you get from the local area rather than listening to hear say about out dated stereotyping from your colleagues.xx

My parents retired from London to Preston, my sister moved her family to Leeds, no problem. I'm a full time union official, my colleagues are "tree hugging lefties" who "embrace diversity" but live in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, West Sussex etc.

I've done reconnaissance trips to various areas and ruled them out: distance from amenities, hospital, transport, too many estates etc, colour of my skin never entered into it.

My sister moved to Italy without knowing a word of the language, being "the" ethnic minority never crossed her/our mind let alone considering it in your own country.
