Are the oscars really racist?

So with the nominations came the questions as to why no black actors or actresses were nominated for best actor. Are the reasons because there were no good films with black actors therefore none got nominated. Or is it simply the people who select the nominations being discriminative?

Or would the nominators be panned for nominating a black or other person of ethnic origin just because they felt the need to make it appear inclusive regardless of talent and quality of the film?

"Just wondering does anybody know Who's in charge of the nominations?"

The boss is a black woman who has said massive change is coming. so next year we will be wondering whether the black actors actually deserve the award or whether they got it simply because they are black. I think they will be wondering the same thing. There are the BET awards and the MOBO awards which are exclusively for black actors and musicians, imagine the outcry if there was a white equivalent for either. There are associations exclusively for black people, lawyers, police, firemen, you name it, it's there and no one says anything, but let a white group form something similar and presto, the good old race card is hauled out and waved like mad. Personally, I think the PC brigade has lost direction.

And be in the academy you need to have been an actor or director of a few 'proper' films (ie not an xhamster version!)

And once you're in you're in for life

Hence the majority are getting on a bit (over 60), and mostly white (as historically most actors and directors were white)

I read someone's comment on this elsewhere, it summed it up well.

"All this drama prompted me to look for some facts. The bureau of labor statistics doesn't publish demographic data for occupations whose constituency is less than 50k people, and actors are 46k, but there is some related data. Then general "arts" occupational category under which actors are included is 6.5% black. Most of the other sub categories are right around that number, and none are too far off, so I feel pretty good about using that number. There are 20 actors nominated, so the expected number of black nominees is 1.3. Considering numbers of nominees is a whole number, 1 would be perfectly in line with expectations, but 0 is pretty fucking close to that. There does not have to be any inherent bias for a demographic that consists of 6.5% of the occupational population not to be represented in a sampling of 20 of them.

TL;DR - 6.5% of actors are black, sampling 20 actors and not having blacks represented is not necessarily racist. In fact, it's pretty much to be expected."

Also,

"to add to this:

- since 2000 there have been 80 actors (including this year) nominated for best actors

- 10 have been black

- 10/80 = . . . 12.5%

- 3 winners have been black

- 3/16 = . . . 18.75%

Now if we are going off the 6% number from BLS (http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat11.htm) it would appear that even including this year black actors have been massively over represented. If we are going off of the demographics as a whole (13.2% black) then it is right around the correct range for both nominations and winners."

The origin of the story is a few black actors and directors have got on their high horse because for two years running no black actor/actress or director have been nominated for an Oscar.

The only thing I have thought about the whole thing is a child throwing a tantrum. As stated before there have been a good few black actors who have won awards and more that's been nominated.

ah but does that mean we have to go back to the casting couch and see how fair that process is? there are very few roles that are written to be played by specific races yet the majority of leading roles are played by white people. Does this mean that white people are intrinsically better actors or is there a racial bias by casting directors?

It's like anything else, loads of back scratching goes on.

there will be a few top actors, who really give the performance some va va voom, then there's a whole bunch of others who are fairly interchangeable.

Some practical factors will come into play , who's busy already etc.

So the decision will reflect some payoff.

Casting couch being one, but there will be others of course

Look at footy , how many players move for huge fees and don't really make a huge difference

On topic, it's not so much the Oscars are racist as chosen by old white dudes.

Thus you get a film like Creed, which has been critically acclaimed, and neither the black director or black lead are nominated, but Sylvester Stallone is.

People shouldn't be nominated just because they are black.

Anymore than if they are white.

They should all be nominated on individual merits, if they deserve to be nominated or win then colour shouldn't be an issue.

Or gender, sexuality, religion or age.

Or even if the character is cgi.

If there good enough they should win.... My precious!

This is just good old self publicity, we'd all forgotten about Mrs Smith, well that is what's she's best known as these days

It also publishes their own production company which only makes films with their black actor/actress clan.

Id dispute the "very few roles written to be played by specific races" purely because so many films are based in the past/"real world".

Which means you're restricted to the historic demographics

Oscars are for a clique really. They're there to promote certain people and 'reward' them with a shiny prize. Same as most other award ceremonies.

I think it's a crappy excuse to say no black actors or films have been worthy of any nominations the past year, of course they have. I don't think anyone should be chosen for being black to make up for a shortfall of black nominations but it's still ridiculous to say what they said.

Oscars have had their day really. We're progressing more towards a different society than one that lauds rich people and promoted fame, it's all about celebs who are like us now. No-one really cares that much about the royal family, they used to be different, looked up to and respected, now they're not by newer generations and haven't been for some time (which is why the media tend to ignore them, nobody gave a shit they had some babies, even gt slagged off by many for creating welfare babies that are burdens on the tax payer...coz they aren't special for having money or hidden power).

It's the same for celebs. Half the time the ones who act like they're better than anyone else end up being ridiculed, no-one cares about this shit any more.

Xfactor, big brother, etc, all gave a chance for 'normal' people to become famous. There's not a lot of people considered special any more, if any, especially nobody exists with unique talents and the way the media is now proves this.

Do you get bonuses at work ? Or an achievement recognition at work ? I know many companies that celebrate their employees annually, be it through giving them a holiday, or an award, or an extra financial incentive. So I guess that would be the Oscars equivalent.

Kate and Williams baby was a massive event it was all that was covered in the media that week.

Secondly anyone who went on about them being "welfare" babies would be pretty dim given William has a full time job. However he does give his full 40k salary to the charity he works for each year. So effectively working for free doing a pretty damn important job.

I tend to feel rather bad for the royals its effectively being born into servitude, sure you get riches but its more a gilded cage than anything

Doesn't matter what you think, i wasn't commenting on what you think, i was commenting on the way things are changing and have changed over time.

Old people love celebrating the royals (not all old people probably but the jubilee was a big event for old people round here) but the younger generations didn't really care about it nor celebrate it, definitely didn't see anything on fb even where anyone cared at all.

10000% correct. We have to get rid of the notion that everything is based upon colour creed or religion. I like u don't like racist or bullies but I also dislike media hype blowing silly stories about colour making a difference in the Oscar.

I know someone who is an actor in the US and a member of the Academy and votes for nominees. There is not a prejudiced bone in his body and I very much doubt he would have anything to do with any organisation that was in any way racist. Maybe the reason there have been no black actors nominated in the last 2 years is because in an industry that is dominated by white actors the best 20 rolls in each category have been played by white actors. Just a thought...

I'm not discussing their income ok, or if people are idiots for thinking the way they do, i'm discussing peoples opinions and whether they respect the rich, or those with higher status, any more. Because it relates to the clique i originally mentioned.

I do think some people complain about not being a part of a clique, as in the Oscars case, but more people don't really see any difference between themselves and those who shoved themselves on pedestals. Not sure if it's because society is becoming just as narcissistic as those on pedestals are or if it's because they value themselves more now and don't think other people are that amazing, maybe a bit of both and other reasons too?

It's not just media where you see it, although that's a good starting point for checking out opinions. How many flags did you see up for the jubilee or royal baby, that were anywhere that doesn't belong to the state? Pretty sure more go up for the football every season.

How many recent stars exist with the same amount of recognition as James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, or anyone from earlier eras? Don't think there are that many really, i can't think of any at all (Kardashians maybe?). The hype isn't really there any more for most 'celebs'. We've changed over time.

I can't really comment on the other stuff sorry, i have no idea what you're talking about.

I don't think it's racist. It's just that no black actors have done an 'Oscar worthy' performance.

Why should the academy put a black actor / actress through and snub someone white who did a better performance.

There isnt a committee, the membership vote for their personal preference (ranked 1 to 5) these votes are then aggregated to reach a final short list.

Also worth pointing out that there were around 200 eligible films this year (list can be found on the Oscars website), and each film can submit the names of 10 actors & 10 actresses for consideration by the members, so the members can have literally thousands of performances to vote from.

I notice that 2nd rate actress mrs smith, best known for being married to other 2nd rate and over hyped (apart from a couple of films) actor, failed to rais the subject that Hollywoods main problem is its predominantly run by and biased towards people of Jewish descent- so any racial bias is a secondary issue. Of course that may backfire on her image to pick that fight- just ask Mel Gibson.

I also notice she failed to address the nepotism in Hollywood, where the mediocre offspring of celebs seem to gain roles that more talented actors of 'ordinary' families would be better suited to.....cant think why that issue has never bothered her?

I just wonder which black actor will be happy with the Oscar for "best patronised black leading actor" if like this year there are no genuine best actor nominees who are ethnic minority on merit alone and someone has to receive it regardless?

The idiot on the BBC the other suggested that because Stallone got a support nomination then by reflected glory the other cast members must have been equally as good and deserving..meaning Michael b.Jordan regardless of his actual performance.

I'm not really sure how that works and by that logic does it mean all the awards could have to come from the same film.

It is quite noticeable that the protesters can't or don't actually name actors and films that have been snubbed.

I don't think the issue really is the lack of nominations, but actually there are no people of ethnic origin (whatever that may mean) on the nominating council.

My opinion is that the oscars are not racist. But I do think Hollywood maybe.

There are not enough roles being written for black actors.

Every time a black actor plays a part it is invariably about slavery, the civil rights struggle or similar subjects. Everyday roles are not covered. There is no reason why the following roles could not be covered by black actors.

Bond - Idris Alba

Bourne - Jamie Foxx

I'm not saying other actors have not played those roles brilliantly but why aren't black actors getting the same opportunities as others.

Agree.

Another area is romcoms - so many of these about white couples. Very few black people in these.

And there's no reason why a black man couldn't be Bond. The Bond character in the books is sexist and homophobic, which the modern film Bond isn't (noticeably, anyway). So the original character has already changed.

I'm not saying other actors have not played those roles brilliantly but why aren't black actors getting the same opportunities as others.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO Bond as wrote by the author is a white male simple as that.Like I said earlier Morgan Freeman was nominated for a role where he played the part of a ginger Irishman in the original book, but this book wasnt as well known as Bond."

I don't see what difference it would make.

Many people who watch Bond have never read the books. They are only watching the film as an escape. It's a spy who shoots people and shags women. Black actors can fill that role as well as white.

There are not enough roles being written for black actors.

Every time a black actor plays a part it is invariably about slavery, the civil rights struggle or similar subjects. Everyday roles are not covered. There is no reason why the following roles could not be covered by black actors.

I think the film industry is still both sexist and racist, which means the nominations for the awards will probably be skewed.

If white actors get the best roles and black actors are typecast, which does seem to happen, there is bound to be a knock-on effect when it comes to awards.

A silk purse can be made of a sow's ear of a role but it's much more difficult.

A 'travesty', haha.

Yes, it would be silly to cast anyone as a quota. But no one's suggesting that. They're suggesting it would be cool to give a great actor like Idris Elba a chance to play an iconic role, and not rule him out based on skin tone.

In the books James Bond has dark hair. Daniel Craig doesn't. Guess that is a travesty?

Take a look in the books for a description of the character Jack Reacher and then look at who was cast for the film... OK, he effectively cast himself, but when it suits, Hollywood is quite happy to stray a very long way from the details in books.

oscars are for the merits of the films produced..not the actors skin colours or races.

why cant bond be asian..or far east asian?..

quite simply, because its merely pandering to an extreme political correctness in my opinion.

I've been happy with almost all of the bonds..apart from daniel craig..not because he is white..just because I think he's shit(as bond)and I havent really liked any of the latest offerings anyway.I dont think bringing in a black actor is necessary at all, whether its reflective of multiculturalism or not.

Hollywood's renowned for taking liberties with roles

However I don't think you can mess with an established line of characters

Quite easy to, for a first script, and then take it on from there

yes thats true...but for the stories to 'work' a bit of realism is needed.

Any bond of a different race is going to stand out in a crowd(unless the crowds a very diverse group of people),people would just simply notice our new ethnic bond more easily as he lurks about the houses/casinos/embassies of wealthy diplomat super villians.

cruise produced the movie himself with friends help so it couldnt be helped.

so by all means if a black actor wants to produce a movie and cast himself in the starring role then go for it but that will not change the fact that James Bond as created by Ian Fleming is white.

No.

The awards are for ACTING.

I follow the argument that as 'male whites' own damn near everything that all major roles are made for 'male whites' and not females or blacks ......

so ...

where to next ?

I'm going to boycott football and not accept an award until all the football powers that be devise a game that is fair to older fat females....

I do hope someone has pointed out that the real racism would be that fewer films are made with black leads even if you take the proportions of citizens into account. The awards are theoretically to awards good performances but there must be many films to choose from. Regardless the Oscars has never really been some kind of objective award ceremony for the best film of the year its incredibly subjective and voting isn't free. They campaign to win one for pities sake. You are far better off reading articles on the most enjoyable films of the the year than using awards won to decide what's worth watching. Very few of the best films get nominated except in categories like special effects.

I have plenty of imagination but I fail to see why we should have to fill gender or race quotas to the detriment of established characters, why do people not use their imagination and CREATE NEW CHARACTERS to be played by the Idrises and Judy's of the acting world?"

Again it's not about quotas it's about ability.

"Sorry OP for the thread hijack"

not so much a hijack lol..

I mean..I really dont think I could complain being typecasted in a period drama set in 19th century england..unless the story was central to my character..other wise I know which part I would be playing.

"we should get Danny Devito to play John Coffey in a green mile remake or better still Peter Dinklage that lad is an amazing actor so obviously the fact he is a white dwarf should not preclude him from playing a giant black man if some people are to be believed.

See now your argument is lost your are reverting to silliness.

There is no comparison to a black Bond and what you have just suggested. "

I am merely exaggerating a point to show that characters that are established should be changed or tweaked as little as possible and yes while my post was indeed silly it in my opinion illustrates perfectly the need to leave said established characters alone.Bond is a white male Coffey is a black male Shaft is a black male Flash Gordon is a white male just leave the status quo on such characters alone and if you want change then CREATE new characters for people to play instead of reworking the established ones.

Some roles were just ment to be played by a particular race, bond is stretching it a bit being played by anyone but Sean connery.

othelo has a poor history, but thats a different story.

when it comes to the Oscars, I can't think if a film where a black actor has put in an amazing performance this year, I might be wrong, but I think people are too quick to jump on the racist band wagon, and see coincidence, as an act of racism.

but on the other side of the coin, I wouldn't want. to be a black actor, who wins an Oscar, because the academy didn't want to look racist, I would rather win it because of my performance , because everyone would know why I won it, and.mark my words, there will.be nominations for black actors next year in abundance, I just feel sorry for the winner of "best actor in a supporting role that happens to be black" its like saying "you are the one we could tolerate most".

we are all.equal, we.put our trousers on one leg at a time, if you find that you are being held back because of race or gender or sexual orientation, the answer is work harder, nothing in life is for free, that's what my dad told me, when.you have half the chances. put in twice the work, so spike lee needs to pull his head out of his ass.

Like I said, Jack Reacher.

Reacher is, like 7 ft tall, and blonde, in the books! Tom Cruise? Really?

cruise produced the movie himself with friends help so it couldnt be helped.

so by all means if a black actor wants to produce a movie and cast himself in the starring role then go for it but that will not change the fact that James Bond as created by Ian Fleming is white.

so Idris has the ability to play a white male? no he does not, does he have the ability to play a secret agent? yes without a shadow of a doubt just not James Bond.

I've rarely watched a spike lee film..I actually cant really stand many films that have being black as a central theme..unless there is a specific great story that sparks my interest.I suppose I'm just shallow and want to be entertained than see films based on statements about society.
