Tattoos, can I comment?

Hi all,

I was in the steam room at my local gym last week and there were a couple of 20something lasses in.

Admiring, as one does, they both had several very good tattoos. I wanted to comment but don't know the etiquette of this. I was generally chatting to them, but should I mention the tats?

Some pointers would be helpful please...

Thanks

John

Central

Seems fair game for discussion if you're getting on, and are perhaps looking for information. Could be a little creepy if it seems like indirectly being hit upon in a vulnerable place etc.

I don't mind people asking me about mine and enjoy showing them off to those who appreciate them

.. But get annoyed when people randomly touch them

Touch them?

Blimey! Only in my fantasies

think people that get tatts done would love people to say they like them - some are very interesting and begin a good convo

If they're new tatts then they'd probably be ok with compliments or being asked about them.

After 10 yrs though i find it a bit tedious to be asked about mine at times...especially being asked how many i have.

Tempted as I am at the prospect of a close examination of their tattoos to determine their age, I think that may have got me slapped, at best

I really don't mind people asking me about my tats. I get it a lot especially in Summer.

However, strangers coming up to me and touching them? Not on at all.

I find that commenting on a girls ink is a great ice breaker

Be wary that they may represent something incredibly personal that they may not want to talk about with a stranger.

Also if they're in an area which wouldn't be on display if they were in normal clothes, perhaps don't comment either as it could be perceived as you perving.

Why not just ask a general question if you'd like to chat?

Oh, I was already chatting, that I can do.

It's the tattoo etiquette I don't know.

Depends on the situation.

Compliments are always nice in the right context but can be intrusive if I just want to be left alone. Guess you have to judge the situation for yourself.

Just say.. Nice ink.. You can usually tell if someone wants to talk about them by the reaction to that simple statement

I only said that as it's the gym, people tend to wear more revealing and less restrictive clothing at the gym.

A few months back I got talking to a girl in a club it started about tats anyway we left that club and went to another next thing I know she says do you want to see, me thinking they on her arm or leg next thing I know she completely removed her dress for me to see them, I have no idea what her tats were of if I'm honest I'm easily distracted
