I've recently learnt that it is rude to do garden stuff on a Sunday!

An elderly gentleman informed me recently that it is rude and shouldn't be done on a Sunday out of respect for neighbours!

With all due respect, what the hell has it got to do with the neighbours?!?

Has anyone ever heard such rubbish?!?

Anything that made a loud or loudish noise (e.g. mowing the lawn) was definitely considered inconsiderate when I was growing up. I guess attitudes have changed over the years.

I agree with the elderly gentleman to a certain extent - pottering about cutting back, raking etc is fine, but motor mowers and the whine of electric garden tools can be annoyingly intrusive for those wanting to enjoy the peace and quiet of their gardens on a Sunday.

Sundays afternoons when I was a child were reserved for chilling out and it was seen to be inconsiderate to get the power tools/lawnmower out in respect of the neighbours. .think this attitude has long gone now xx

as long as it is within repsectful hours i really dont care what people do. i would rather people take care of their property on any day they can than let it go to wrack and ruin because their only free day is a sunday.

The days of everyone working mon-fri 9-5 are long gone so people do what they can when they can.

Back in the day...yes! No shops were open and most places of work would be closed from Saturday lunch to Monday morning.....my granny used to tell me!

Because traditionally Sunday was/is a day of rest, most people worked hard all week and appreciated a day to relax. It was also a chance to spend the day with your family. My mum wouldn't use the washing machine or vacuum cleaner either.

Wonderful thing here (France) is that it ( while not illegal) is considered extremely antisocial to use noisy garden tools on a Sunday.

And since France stops for lunch between 12 and 2 pm every day; between those hours every day, too .

It's wonderful.

When I lived in Germany, it was illegal to wash your car on a Sunday.

Haven`t heard of it but I can see where people are coming from I can equally see why it`s going by the wayside. In the 1940s/50s my granddad was a signalman on the railway and Saturday was a normal working day so with a six day working week, Sunday was the only day of rest for him. Also, most people couldn`t afford to own their own properties and I don`t think it even came into their heads that they should even think about it! Those who were lucky enough to have a Local Authority house were lucky in that they usually had a half decent place that didn`t need much work apart from decorating. But now work patterns have changed, people can but their own properties much easier, you have access to much more machinery to repair and upgrade your house along with late evening and Sunday opening of DIY suppliers making lifestyles so much different to when it was the done thing not to disturb the peace! Plus, I suppose, there`s the "God`s Day" angle. People are much less religious now so God`s Day doesn`t exist for many now!

Frankly, I do not understand what is so difficult to grasp about the elderly gentleman's comment. The fact the gentleman is elderly is irrelevant - thankfully many younger people still show that they have respect for others.

Sunday is pretty much the only day many, perhaps most people can have a lie-in, relax etc and it is a matter of courtesy, respect and consideration to think about what might disturb other people's peace.

We are in retail , old fashioned mon - sat 8.30 - 5.30 . Sunday is our only day off and the lawn won't mow itself !

And I am of an age to remember when Sunday's were a day of rest .

Now most shops are open Sunday's , takeaways as well .

So the old guy complaining needs to get a grip on reality and realise things have changed .

It was absolutely no inconvenience to him whatsoever. It wasn't noisy, it wasn't anywhere near his garden, it was absolutely nothing to do with him. To be honest, I'm very respectful of the elderly, but I completely ignored him and politely explained that I was doing what I believed was the right thing to do in my situation.

My next door neighbour only cuts their lawn twice a year, when the council tell them to. I would love for them to cut their lawn, even on a sunday! I even gave them my old lawn mower. They left it out in the rain until weeks later i took it to landfill. But would i tell them to cut their lawn? No. Its not my business.

My neighbour on the other side has spent the last 6 weeks building a kitchen/diner sometimes until 10 at night 7 days a week. Do i complain? No. If i want to do similar in the future and he complains about the noise will i be angry? Very..

A bit of a broad generalisation .

The gentleman concerned may have paid taxes all his life or provided sterling service to the community .

Sunday used to be considered to be a day of rest which was spent with your family .

Whilst times have moved on , making Sunday just another day is not necessarily a good thing .

The gentleman making the comments may be fit and healthy and not using any NHS resources .

I heard a comment today about people who are brave on social media etc...They are called keyboard warriors ..I like to call them cowards !! I agree with you, if whatever you were doing did not wake him etc, disturb him through noise then I think you should continue without feeling guilty. Absolutely! I probably would have said something like that I understand his _iew as different from yours and that you need to continue doing what you doing as it does not actaully affect him.

My parents are coming up for 89 years old and they often complain to me about the noise on Sundays. My mum used to tell my dad off for revving his motorbike up on a Sunday (he sold it a year or so ago). Its just how things were when they were young and its very hard to keep pace with modern life.

I will add though that they would never complain to anyone in person...just me

Sunday is a sabbatical, a day of rest for men and women apart from providing a meal. It's the way it was and has been for years, maybe it's a good idea to follow,basically a family day when we all pull together and enjoy each other's company?? Not many have these days but maybe a good idea to bring back when families speak and listen to each other. Me and my girls Sunday's are ours it's our special day together

I think then older you get the harder you find it is to fit in with the modern world, hence you become a grumpy old man / woman.

Wow to this thread. Very interesting.

I work Monday-Friday. Saturday and Sunday are days for doing work that needs to be done around the house. As long as it isn't really early or really late, I don't see the issue. If anyone told/asked me to stop, I'd say sorry but no.

I beg to differ on that..not all of Scotland thinks this..you go to the Isle of Harris and Lewis...they do nothing on a Sunday apart from going to church.

When I lived in Germany, it was illegal to wash your car on a Sunday.

Yet legal to have prostitutes on the road side in a camper van waiting for business !!! "

Yep that's about right. The Germans have quite a few rules that would make the average Brit raise an eyebrow.

You are allowed to do jobs in your garden (or anywhere else on your property) on a Sunday but using any kind of power tool is an absolute no no. Usually a neighbour would just complain to your face (back stabbing isn't really a German trait) but if you carried on then he/she would be fully entitled to call the police and depending on the mood of the copper you would either get a fine or a warning.

On the other side of the coin it is compulsory to clear snow from the footpath in front of your property (even on a Sunday) and you can be fined for not doing so, just don't use a petrol snow blower.

Also Sunday opening for shops is much stricter than in the UK.

Other things such as church tax which is deducted from your salary or added to your tax bill which you have to opt out of rather than opt in.

The Germans also pay excise duty on coffee so if you are ever in another country close to a border with Germany you will almost certainly see hundreds of Germans doing the coffee run. We nip over to Holland once a month ish.

as a builder even i stick to certain rules never use power tools early on sunday morning only after 11.00

everyone needs a lie in

use of power tools during working hrs if possible

however if they are arrogant and they themselves do the exact opposite then I will return the favour

got one next door cuts wood between the hrs of 11pm right too 3am

does other garden work with grinders and has the cheek to moan at me when I get mine out to do the work thats needed

I have always enjoyed my Sundays as family days and still do. Kids often come back for Sunday lunch etc so I guess we have maintained the traditional way of family life. I m not saying that it has to be this way but I/we really like it.
