Fu*&ing Renault

Our car broke down last Friday, would not start, Renault diagnostics £84 plus vat said it was the card key reader and quoted us just over £470 plus vat for new reader and the labour. We didn't go ahead with it, wanted to think about it. Today a friend told us about a guy 10 miles from us just starting out buying and Breaking Renaults. Managed to bump the car and got it to him. an hour later our car was back on the road after he fitted a new fuse box and charged us £40.. Rip off bastards Renault. sorry for the rant

I'm sorry about your problems, but do you think any other manufacturer/dealer would be any better?

wouldnt be a new fuse box for 40 quid im afraid , the cards and readers do go faulty regular , theres no way you have even had a second hand fuse box fitted for 40 quid and if you have hes ripped himself off

fuse boxes do suffer on them because of water like , but i wouldnt have been less than 80 quid

I had a Renault Laguna a few years ago and have never had a car self destruct on me in such a short space of time. I said I would never own another and when a friend bought a new Megane recently I warned him about their dodgy electrics.

Sure enough a month after he bought it the car was back at the dealers to try and clear all the electrical gremlins that came with the car.

I've found Honda to be awesome customer service, had a problem (which I caused) sorted for free, tiny issue of the car not starting sometimes.

Turns out the battery terminal was a little loose, took it in and it was sorted within 5 minutes.

Also had the technicians ask what the hell is running on 53mm wiring, they asked to hear the audio system which proceeded to set off the alarms on the forecourt which everyone found hilarious

They also offered to wash it for free when I'm in town.

My brother had a Renault Megane, he had nothing but trouble with it, was the worst car he's ever owned.

I'm not commenting on this thread for fear the Renault might hear me......there's a good car....who's a good girl and going to get me to work without throwing a hissy fit and lighting up with all your warning lights and displaying every fault known to man (and even some unknown to man)....

*tiptoes out of the thread exclaiming "i don't believe you, Op. You must surely be mistaken that a Renault could misbehave...Shame on you!!"

What Renault is it. You can get new readers of eBay and matching cards that just needed to be coded to car. We have had 2 Laguna. Nice when going right but boy when they went wrong they went wrong. We own a Peugeot 207 gt now and love it.

Unfortunately, most garages these days will rip you off I remember once at a local garage I was charged £55 for a tyre, the following week the other tyre needed doing (bad times) so I took the car back to the same place and a youngish lad tried charging me £85 for it. Obviously, I told him where to go and the boss even knocked a fiver off for the inconvenience, winner .

What was I saying again? Oh yea now, I'm know mechanic but I do know my way around an engine fairly well on older cars and can fix basic problems so I can pull garages up when they try it unless it's an electrical fault, then I'm screwed. However, some people aren't quite so fortunate.. Its good to get a second or even third opinion if you can

Unfortunately that was the model. Still if you have it going happy days. Maybe look to see if there are any independents near you.

the biggest issue renault cards have is the card is bent in pockets etc , a good bit of advise is hold the card triangle pointer towards you when pressing the buttons lowers the risc of it stating to bend in yr hand , they also suffer from electric wondow harness and rain sensors also go faulty regular

all french electrics are a bit naff tho

French cars in general are terrible, particularly Renault's. They couldn't fix one if it broke down in front of the men who built the damn things! Their dealer network is horrific, customer service absolute shite and their pricing is astronomical.

I fixed one that had a persistent misfire, Renault had diagnosed it as an ERG fault and fitted one at the cost of a couple of hundred quid and the problem persisted and they couldn't figure it out. It took me two days of scouring the wiring with a multimeter and I eventually found that there was an issue with an aircon pressure sensor and that was causing the misfire!

A new £6 sensor later and the car was fixed.

My advice as always is: NEVER buy French!

Never again. As a company car, I ordered a Peugeot 307. Car of the year.

I had done about 500 miles when the warning lights came on.

Cam belt melted all over the engine. Engine knackered. Write-off. AA's verdict? Ah, its one of them French friday models. Sheesh.

Had a couple of Renault's... Scenic was pretty good...hard life and survived well...my Laguna pretty much fell to bits as I had it...especially trim. I wouldn't buy a French car again...I drive a ancient Volvo s40 sport...faultless..no rust..pretty quick...still has the original exhaust..tho Swedish but made in Holland...love it..I can count on it.

My 207 S16 had all sort wrong with it by around 58,000 miles.

You'd of thought they'd get it right when only making 250 of them

Just saw the word 'Renault' and went

Had a Renault Laguna I, 3 litre auto, electric everything. Magic car for years.

I now have the most unreliable car I have ever had. A 52 plate Laguna II, 6 speed, 2.2DCi. Lovely to drive, great paintwork, no rust but everything has gone wrong. But what do you do? Scrap it and buy someone else's problems or stick with the devil you know?

As for the card key issues I drove over mine with my 44 Te truck. Still worked. But it didn't survive the washing machine when I left it in a pocket. £25 at a shop in London by post all rewired and sorted in 2 days. Just got to replace the Aircon Compressor now ...
