Calories on food menus

Over the weekend I have been in Manc and have got some food from various places - as I am trying to loose a bit of weight I am looking at the calories of food I eat

What I have noticed is that the amount of places that don't have the calories of food on the menu. It makes it really hard for me to make an informed descion on what to eat

I was thinking maybe food outlets should be made to state the calories of each item on the menu.

I'm not so keen on having it shoved in my face sometimes - I don't mind at chains like zizzis where it has things marked that are less than 500 calories but when you're just trying to order a coffee and you're bombarded with numbers I can find it a bit offputting.

If you live in hotels, I can see this being a problem. I live on my own and batch cook loads of grub then freeze it so at least I know what's actually in there.

I sometimes nip out for a Kebab though

Can't you just use common sense when looking at the menu and stating your choices?

Fries bad, baked potato better, etc etc?

Does it really?? Burger high, salad low. Anything fried high, grilled low. It's not that hard to make good food choices when out.

I thought they were bringing this in?

Personally, as someone brought up not to leave anything on his plate, I wish some places would serve smaller portions.

High and low what?

A lean steak fried in organic butter will have a lower amount of fat than a normal steak cooked on a grill.

Hidden calories from fat (oils) and carbs (sugars) is extremely difficult to spot.

If you're that bothered you could try myfitnesspal to track your macronutrients (carbs/fats/protein).

But as a rule of thumb it is very easy to pick healthier options on menus without having everything written down for you. I sometimes winder how people manage to wipe their arses these days without a detailed schematic in front of them.

A few years back New York City began requiring all chain restaurants to have calories on the menu. I love it. Why not give me and others more information to make informed eating decisions?

I just wish more places would do it and that it would be required of more than just chain restaurants.

Or rather, a smaller plate, so half of it falls off before it gets to the table

Yesterday I found myself hissing indignantly at Mrs ddc when the man at the next table, who hadn't finished his vegetables, had the audacity to ask for the pudding menu.

I've managed to lose three stone in 24 weeks on slimming world, while also enjoying life and eating out regularly. It's really not that difficult to make good choices!

Grilled meat, cut all visible fat off. Served with any combination of baked potato, salad, rice, veggies without butter/dressing/sauces (or ask for it on the side so you can control how much you have)

Forgo the desert and limit alcohol intake.

There really is no need to put the calories on the menu

Waitrose used to list calories on their menu, even coffee, latte etc. I'm a bit thankful as I always used to drink mochas now I drink a cappuccino and save myself a few calories

My Arse wiping manual is quite useful...

Ok but I want to know if I have one thing that is say 100 calories less then I can have a treat later

I don't eat puddings as a rule and try to stick to water but it's the secret calories that resteraunt a have

Some people are more serious about taking care of their health and want the option of knowing what they're eating. What's wrong with that?

Give it ten years and everything will be labelled in restaurants. It's a fairly logical step and not difficult to do...
