I have asked this sort of question before but going for it this time, Looking for a few days away to do a bit of sight seeing in a few weeks, I Like history and places of interest.

York - Full of history and only a 2 hour drive depending on the road works.

Stonehenge/Salisbury - I have always wanted to see it, But apart from the Cathedral am not sure if there is anything else to do/see in the area and it's nearly a 4 hours drive away.

North Wales - Full of castles which I like but again not sure what else I would do/see that would interest me.

Or could you recommend anywhere ? The long driving is putting me of lot of places, Ideally within a 2 hour drive away from the North West.

York is of course awesome because I am there. Also there's a few places to visit and whatnot but the main highlight is me.

Kidding aside, I'm not sure Stonehenge is worth the drive. I've driven past it on the way to various holidays and its a stone circle, and not a very big one. there are better stone circles in Derbyshire and Avebury. Salisbury itself is nice but I've never been.

I love Wales but only been to South Wales. My sister loved Anglesey.

Have you considered going North? I enjoyed ny recent trip to Ulverston and Keswick (stone circle there too!), although the roads are probably still iffy after the storms. Or maybe a bit further and visit Glasgow and Loch Lomond?

North Wales has the best castles. Stonehenge, has to be done, but left me underwhelmed. York is a simply beautiful historic city. Do all three and lots more. If it's immersive history you're after, Hampton Court is just the best (but a bit of a trek for you). I'll stop now as I can sense by inner history geek taking over!

Without doubt York because its basically at the epicentre of literally dozens of historical and natural wonders all within a relatively short radius of the city....

York does seem to be the obvious place as everything is in walking distance once you are there, I don't really want to be driving from place to place after the long drive I just want to book a hotel and basically walk around

North Wales for sure. York is nice but very touristy and full of stag/hen parties (in my experience) and Stonehenge (and the surrounding area) is nice but only worth it if you are an English Heritage member already (in my experience).

Feel free to pm me if you'd like some tips. Traveling around the UK has become our favorite pastime.

Salisbury is a lovely city but there really isn't much to do. Stonehenge isn't as good as avebury and at avebury there is a nice pub

Anywhere north of course........ North wales is lovely, having lived there for a few years it was great to get out and about in the hills. York is a gorgeous place, I need to visit again soon, when the waters have receded ...... And that goes for the Lake District, which is certainly living upto it's name at the moment

Yes the floods could be a issue as well, I like Wales been there loads of time, I used to travel all over the North Wales with work, And have stayed in Ruthin castle before which was nice

Northumberland! Full of majestic castles and Pele towers. Beautiful and almost deserted coastline, Hadrians wall, lovely market towns. Can't beat it.

Try the Titan zip wire or Bounce Below in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Relaxing steam railways. Fan of the Prisoner, or just architecture, then Portmeirion is for you

We have an AONB near me in the North East, and of course Snowdonia NP.

Stately Homes and National Trust ? Plenty

World Heritage Site ? The Pontyscyllte Viaduct 200 terrifying feet above the river Dee, with only a 3ft railing

And, last but by no means least woodlands, beaches, waterfalls and a few fab fabbers

Yes I know, But I can handle walking around streets/buildings etc on my own but wouldn't do activities or go walking in up mountains/rambling etc by myself

I've only been to Stonehenge. It was stones.

York seems to pop up in history frequently so I'd go there if you want historical stuff.

Personally I'd go to Wales because it's green and pretty.

Now, North Wales. Highly recommended .maybe I'm biased but just read what Dock and Taff have said .This place is beautiful.

Personally I would save places like Wakes, the Lakes and North Wales for warmer dryer weather.

On that basis out of the three I'd go for York, though Lincoln is also very nice and it's not flooded

Lincoln has lots to do ... Check out the visit Lincoln website.

Not sure how far it would be for you but Glasgow and Edinburgh are great cities to visit. I fell in love with Glasgow even though it was cold and wet the December we visited

York is just the most amazing place - hard to beat for me. Chester is also well worth a visit - quite similar to York with its walls and Roman heritage and riverfront too.

Assuming you don't fancy driving:

If the weather is good, I'd do North Wales. In addition to the castles, they have fantastic scenery for walking.

If the forecast is poor I'd do York, as so much they have to offer is undercover.

Salisbury has also has Old Sarum, Stonehenge is worth taking the time and cycling/walking to it via some of the ancient trackways. Watching the sun set over it as we cycled away was magical. If you go to Salisbury Cathedral, definitely go on the guided tour of the roof/tower, and even if you're not religious, sung evensong is inspiring (they often have visiting choirs - many, many years ago I was one

)

We often join English Heritage on an annual ticket, they have a good website. There isn't a part of the UK I wouldn't recommend, they all have so much to offer, but if you don't want too much travelling, how near are you to Shropshire? Ludlow castle, Shrewsbury, Ironbridge, Blists Hill, the Royal Oak, the ruined Abbeys/Priories and Stokesay Castle just down the road.
