Keep seeing on various posts and threads that we are having our "Britishness" diluted be it from immigrants or other sources .can we define " Britishness " or is it a constantly evolving thing as always ?

Diluted? I think a lot, if not everyone, has a strong sense of identity about where they were born. Maybe some are and have been dragged from pillar to post, but if you are brought up in Britain, then you are British

I've generally tried avoiding limiting myself, though we're all open to influence from others.

Attitudes, beliefs, behaviors? DNA? Many of us are part Neanderthal, up to 6%, though probably not gained here.

British culture has been a product of incoming cultures for millennia.

To suggest there is an arbitrary point at which Britain was pure and to be sought after is utter nonsense.

Name any period in British history and there was a large immigrant population and cultural diversity was changing the status quo.

Therefore Britishness is the ability to take all comers and integrate them and take the best of the incoming cultures and adopt it as our own. Even though that comes with difficulty.

Immigration is superb. Without it Britain would be empty of all humans.

There are numerous typically British characteristics, we don't have to ask what is ours.

Plus being unwilling to adapt to new cultures is a bad thing. Why would we want to alienate just because they're from somewhere else?

Britain is historically the most invaded and occupied land in all history. As a people we have more diverse dna than any other.

Our culture is based on taking pieces from all around the globe and making it our own. We are a melting pot starting from thousands of years ago right through until todays. It is this multi-cultural aspect of our nation that i enjoy.

I find it hilarious when the bnp and the farage-esque xenophobes cry foreigners out, so we should all leave then?!

Yorkshire through and through, and proud of our county, our country and our heritage. But I agree, we are slowly losing our stiff upper lip, carry on regardless British attitude to one of grab what you can by fair means or foul, and get away with doing as little as possible. It does make you wonder and hope what lies ahead for your children and grandchildren but I'm old school, so for now its still onward and upward chaps. Tally Ho Ginger! x x

Everyday, and I work in a busy shop, maybe In a day I serve one or 2 you can tell English isn't their first language and im talking out of hundreds, oh and I live about 8 miles from Dover so it's not like I'm in a weird place that people can't get to

I don't know about values, but I will point out a few things I notice about the British as an "outsider":

-Politeness bordering on emotional suppression

-An inclination to see everything as a set of boxes that need to be"ticked"

-A desire to follow rules, often just for the sake of following them (this fits with the "box ticking" mentality)

-Education as an important factor in everyday life

-A degree of intelligent dry humor is pervasive throughout society

-Not quite grasping the notion of "personal space"

-Gravitating towards the middle of the road on everything, which I think coincides with a general inclination to bring some degree of understanding to even the most diverse acts. There don't seem to be too many "extremes" in Britain, which I think is a bit of a shame, but with the lack of "extremes" I also see a more understanding and tolerant society

And....

-Tea

Overall, I like it.

Im used to being part English/Welsh/Polish/Russian links in my family ive been brought up to embrace other countries an i dont consider britishness

i feel ive enriched from different culture links an different foods from the above countries

an even though i cant speak Welsh/Russian or Polish i have those relatives in my famly from those countries.

I was born and brought up in Scotland but I don't feel patriotic at all. Not because I don't like Scotland but I just don't care about national identity type stuff. I don't feel the need for it for me.
