In my job I go out to peoples homes all day, its amazing how many people simply have nobody and see noone

I went out to a lady's home yesterday I have been out 10 days previous and she hasn't seen a single person since the last time I went into her

It's really sad how little some people have

On the other hand - I work part time 3 days a week and the rest of the time for myself. The conversations I have at work can quite often be the only conversations I have in any given week - the exception being when I have my daughter.

The loneliest I ever felt was when I was in a relationship that wasn't right. To the rest of the world I was still my gregarious self but I couldn't share the fact that I was being abused and I wasn't really allowed to have friends.

I think loneliness is about your relationship with yourself as much as it is about your relationship and interaction with others.

I think it depends, if you interact a lot and view people as friends then maybe it helps alleviate. If on the other hand you struggle to interact and see everyone else having a 'good time' it may reinforce the loneliness felt.

I was lonely when my kids were little, my ex ended up making sure i was isolated.

Now i prefer my own company really, the more people i get to know the more i don't really like people in general...they can keep their 'drama' and bullshit frankly Although i like a few people, most i do not care whether i bother with them or not.

A lot of the older people on the programme are talking about feeling needed, not having friends because they had a partner and family and losing that is what is causing their loneliness. They have adult children and grandchildren but it's the loss of role.

People live longer and develop chronic illnesses. Families/society has become atomised.

We don't have the time or the wherewithall to travel across country to see granny anymore, as 50, 70 yrs ago you would likely live in the same place, or within a few miles of each other.

I left home at 16 and have mostly lived on my tod. Love living alone and my own company but find myself feeling frequently lonely.

There are times I question my usage of Fabs. Is it a replacement for friends? I love the sex but sometimes, just a bit of company would be nice

I confessed how lonely I was feeling to a family member (actually, my only family member!) last night and that programme came on five minutes later. I was in floods of tears.

I'm lucky in that I have a huge network of friends - I'm the person everyone says "you know everyone" to.

I've been struggling with anxiety for two years though (and also the deepest unrequited love I've ever felt). I've been single a long time and it rarely bothe_ed me. However, loneliness hit me like a runaway train as life suddenly became full of uncertainties and fear.

I can't believe how strong it feels. I can see two people hug or hold hands and well up. Ridiculous really, but I'm man enough to admit it. I just think I/we need the human touch in tough times.

I do think a strong seam of loneliness does run through this site. Obviously, far from everyone though.

Loneliness is a terrible state of being and one I've felt for the majority of my life. It had nothing to do with how many people were around me, but the fact that, being aspie, I found it difficult to connect with anyone on and trust them with myself completely. Since meeting Mr Who I haven't felt like that at all

Good question. As communication technology have advanced we have been able to communicate more often but also more remotely. For some people this could equate to being more lonely, due to the _eduction in physical proximity.

Personally though I am alone (very much by choice) I am certainly not lonely. A friend I knew at school and recently got back in touch with, described me (and the rest of our 'generation') as emotionally independant. So I don't tend to get lonely not matter how alone I may be. The down side is I can be a bugger to really get to know, or at least be frustrating as most people seem to prefer others to be a bit more dependant on them.
