Help ... New car thoughts ....

So my very old fiesta is terminal and will be heading to car heaven soon. Really cannot make a decision about what to get next.

90% of my journeys I will be solo, mainly commuting 10 miles a day ish .... occasional motorway / longer distance.

5 doors essential for journeys with sister and her baby.

Apart from that I am not fussy.

Narrowed it to Nissan Micra, Skoda Citigo and Hyundai i10 .... I think lol.

Looking to pay £5k max.

Anyone want to give thoughts on car choice or what pitfalls to avoid when buying ... first time buying a car myself thanks x

If your budget is 5k you might struggle with an i10 (new shape at least) or a citigo as they are relatively new cars to the market.

I have a 1 series sport and it's the best car I've owned. If you could get a 5 door in your budget do it especially if it's diesel I pay £95 a year in road tax £35 for mot and the usual service costs every year my only major spend on it was £500 last summer for 4 new tyres which I was advised by a forum member to change from low profile to normal tyres and it's brilliant I get about 450 miles on a full tank which costs £45.

My mum has a micra convertable she loves it my her spend on it is minimal however it does cost her £180 in road tax.

I'm not so keen as to me it feels like a tin can when driving, it's too leight and doesn't corner well or maybe I just drive it too quick hahahah

Personally I'd recommend a small petrol and unusually for me I'll say the last few Ford Fiesta's have been outstanding cars to drive.

True to form I'll also recommend you look at the Alfa Romeo MiTo, they're such fun little cars to drive but they need to be serviced properly.

I've been driving Alfa's for the past ten years with no problems other than a clutch on my GT at 100k miles (after a 210bhp/410ftlb remap) and a drive shaft that stared knocking last week (105k miles). It gets a proper service every year at a specialist and I also change the oil and filter every 6 months (£45 if I do it myself). I dared say that without the remap both would still be fine now.

Can't be that bad if Saab, Vauxhall and Fiat all used the Alfa engines in their cars.

I agree about don't do diesel unless your doing at least 12k and even then regular longer runs are essential.

Also agree the recent fiestas are good little motors.

If you want something trendy and funky fiat 500 look good. Avoid Citroen imho too many people I know had lots of bother.

Octavia are brilliant cars. I had a VRS for four years (only just moved on from it), really reliable and great to drive but much bigger than OP is looking for. The Fabia is a good call or a maybe a VW Polo? Or a Seat Ibiza, they aren't bad.

Work have leased some VW up's, they are a nice car. Small car but enough room to get four big blokes in, quite nippy to.

This is the weekend of test drives .... Micra, i10 so far will see if I can squeeze the others in too .

Love the Fiat 500 but 5 doors is a must.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I loved my old Micra. The only thing that ever went wrong with it was the battery died at AbFabs when it was about 7 years old.

I gave it to a friend this year and it has seen her through the floods up north without any problems at all.

I had mine from new for 10 years. It's the longest I have ever kept a car and I only changed because I wanted to get myself a car for my birthday present to myself.

A friend has had hers for 12 years and has never had anything go wrong with it.

Go with one of your first choice's, Nissan Micra, the car has proven itself over years, they are normally owned by old people so finding a decent, low mileage car that hasn't been thrashed should be easy

I got a micra, and love it, 2nd one iv had. Nippy, but doesn't drink fuel, only a 1 litre but iv done motorways and she can keep pace.
