Having just seen the Interview, he was fined £5000 for that..... what's happened to people's sense of humour? The presenter took it in her stride.

I'm not sure a fine was the answer. He made himself look a bit of a knob and it was unprofessional but does fining help discourage creepy dubious flirting skills at work?

I listened and yeah he shouldn't have said it. However

Is this actually newsworthy? ? The amount of attention the media gave this thing.

Secondly Flintoff expressed his disappointment. Hold on since when did Fred become the poster boy of good behaviour. Fuck off Flintoff! !

What he actually said was fine, asking someone out for a drink is perfectly reasonable. The problem it was live interview while both were working, it's hard enough for female presenters to gain credibility in sports as it is without this. He was at work and should behave like a professional person. If I was at a board meeting or something and stood up and asked the person doing a presentation out I'd be in a whole heap of trouble and rightly so. Time and place simple as. I think a rebuke and apology followed by a decent fine is a fair response too. It definitely has nothing to do with humour.

People just want to be offended these days.

I'm not saying it's great behaviour from Gayle, and he doesn't exactly come out of this looking good, but it's not really worth a £5,000 fine. I mean I'm sure cricketers have said worse to each other before.

Agreed. Mr N and I just discussed this. Its rare to find a man who understands how difficult it can be for women professionally when the men they're dealing with have no concept of the boundary between work and play. It does also happen the other way round too.

If gay male sports reporters have difficulty being taken seriously professionally then yes, I'd imagine most of the "PC brigade" would be suggesting his actions were similarly inappropriate.

Putting the concept of flirting to one side, Chris Gayle is representing a company or in his case his a cricket club.

He is paid to give an interview and represent his club in a positive light. I can see the funny side to the flirting but it is misconduct and I understand the reasoning for the fine.

I personally would have dealt with it privately and gave the player a bollocking but social media made it in to a scandal so a public response was necessary.

Who is hounding him, exactly? He's got some criticism. He's not being followed by an angry mob.

He acted unprofessionally. You don't ask someone out while doing your job. Wait till off duty and in private.

You have to laugh. He is a massive wannabe 'playa'! Check out his Twitter feed, desperate to be a 'brand'.

It's right that he got fined for his actions. Just for being mega-creepy if nothing else but this isn't an appropriate way to behave towards a woman who's simply doing her job, or a guy as well for that matter of he were so inclined.

If he wants to ask her out, wait for a private moment and make it a bit special rather than verbally trying to get her knickers off on live TV!

I feel it was wholly inappropriate misconduct which would not be tolerated in most modern workplaces whether male to female, female to male or any other combo. The fine seems proportionate in my opinion.

He wasn't fined for asking her out, it was where he chose to do it, on live while at "work". It was professionally inappropriate and he should know better it's not like he's some young kid thrust in front of a camera for the first time, international captain and experiences in cricket and media. I would suggest that many of us would be in danger of being sacked or at least disciplined severely for similar behaviour at work. And like I say women in men's sports get enough grief as it is so this was always going to get him in bother, he's a bit of an arrogant dick by all accounts anyway.

It was technically inappropriate but if she had a sense of humour she could have passed it off pretty easily.

Some people want to pretend this is a woman's issue - bollocks is it. As an 18 year old student I worked with a lot of very old ladies and they said similar things to me. It doesn't have to be uncomfortable, you just say "oh Margaret, I couldn't handle you" and then it's just banter.

She did pass it off, she blanked him. As far as I know she didn't complain either, didn't need to as it was live TV which is entirely the problem. Had he said exactly what he said to her in private no issue. It's not a gender issue really other than it undermines women presenters, which is poor, the main issue is unprofessionalism. It was unprofessional and a fine is fitting for that. But she missed a golden opportunity to put him back in his place!

Nothing wrong asking a pretty woman out for a drink, but it did make him look like a dick doing it when he knew he was being interviewed on camera.

He should have waited until the camera had stopped rolling and asked her properly...and he may even have got lucky then too...you just never know.

And for the record, I would have asked her out too...just not on camera

She's gorgeous.

It warrants a fine because it's his job and it's a work context, as opposed to having a particularly big impact on the 'victim'
