"I see this posted a lot on housing associations adverts so wanted to chuck this bit in there. Tunbridge Wells is currently having a lot of new flats/ houses built. A friend has a 1 bed flat in one of these roads, he pays £80 per week, yet the same road a new flat there is charging £140 per week affordable rent. They are both owned by the same housing association so how can they justify the huge difference? " You should ask the housing association there, they will have a proper schedule of why the differing costs. Will help ease your gripe about it with the proper answer rather than us here guessing mate.

"Private renting prices in my area are sky high and because i don't have kids i can't get a place on the council. So my only option is to live with family." Even one rooms in shared houses are above a lot of young people's affordability.

"From what I remember affordable rents are the governments way of bringing rented properties to the same rents. Housing association and council rents have always been cheaper than private rents. If you check you'll find that affordable rent prices will be similar to private rents so you are no better off renting social properties " Ours aren't,it's why they are called affordable, even though some people still need to claim housing benefit to live there. It's cheaper for the Government to pay housing benefit on flats that are almost half the cost of private landlords.

"I paid £1500 for a 1 bed flat in east London. My colleagues pay up to £2500 for west/south London. £80 a week seems ridiculously cheap for anywhere. " £1500 a month, not a week. I'm not minted.

Why people clammer to England's capital to be fucked over financially is beyond my lil blond brain , I think it's greed Many towns have living under 300 a month and if people inhabitanted these areas there would then be more demand for local services and more jobs 400 a month is plenty accross real England for an individual to get a single bed apart of ok quality in our area dire is 200 a month 3 bed houses are 650 So no 80 is not cheap it is London and South east hot spots which are expensive , and in my opinion rather than bitch people should move and give other parts of the uk a chance ofprosperity xxx

"House prices have been pushed up by demand. Soon there will be no more land to build in and around London. It's not greed that makes people come here to live,it's work. " It's not work there is plenty around the country and if people did not clammer to London there would be more

I want a commute less than 30 minutes so I can do things with my life other than work. Perhaps living nowhere near London you have no idea what renting is like. £80 is cheap. I wasn't bitching, I think someone who complains at ~£100 a week rent is entitled.

" Yes but why do you want to work in the hell hole which is London when you have to earn over 20000 after tax just to pay for the accommodation.? The lure of making nett more money than you could anywhere else in the country must play a part , the reality is most people earn nett less than if they located to a cheaper and more friendly place to live

My family and life are here. That's the case for millions of people. London is a lure for people as it's a fantastic city. Just because you don't think so doesn't alter the fact that it is a city the world wants to see and experience. Socially cleansing London and leaving it to the rich and off-plan foreign buyers is only countered by us continuing to live here and fighting for London to remain a real place for real people.

I don't want to do the bare minimum I have to do to get by. I'd rather live comfortably and do a job I love. Plus I love London. Perhaps you finding it unfriendly is due to you and how you're perceived.

Private landlords give you a 6/12 month tenancy agreement and if they want the property back you set to looking for a new home again. Housing association gives mo security... That is my experience Mrs _d40

No one acting as a landlord owes you a favour, even if the landlord is a housing association. If they did not make a profit of some sort, they would be bankrupt and unable to operate. Without wanting to sound more like a capitalist dog of running imperialism, it costs a lot to buy a property in most places and a return on investment is necessary. The rents that you are suggesting may or may not be expensive for your area. You would be lucky to get half a garage here for that. If you find something cheaper that you can tolerate living in, then go for it. It is a market economy. Housing Associations are great assets but they too need to survive.

"Err, I live in Newcastle and both £80 and £140 sound pretty cheap for rental to me too. " I agree, that sounds pretty cheap! I live in Bristol and pay out of my arse for a 1 bed place to myself. (Almost £200 per week, without bills)

My 3 bed is worth £40,000 if i want to buy it. It's made out of cardboard and MDF and i wouldn't purchase this piece of shit tbh. The older houses will be cheaper because the rent only goes up each year by what is allowed and considered a fair rise. The new house they're just charging more coz they can and want to make more money.

"It is def £80 a week, there are 3 bed houses here for £138 per week, I will stress these are council properties so not everyone can get on the list. They do try to send people down the private renting route purely because the wait for a council property is so long" That rent sounds about right as the housing association I left with redundancy took on some affordable rent flats and houses and the rental was similar as I questioned how they could be affordable when clearly they didn't match normal social rents
