credit score?

this is being asked as we need to rent a place soon.i was told even tho we are in our 50s we shall need a credit check.what happens if we get a bad result.we never had ccj or bankrupcies and never been to court.we did however,3 years ago had trouble paying a loan.had the payments reduced and after a sale of a property paid it off

You can sign up to Experian Credit Expert for 30 day free trial and you'll get your report to view and get a rating on it. I did it before taking out a mortgage as I'm a paranoid bugger.

Credit checks on renting a place is pretty much norm through an agent. It's so that they have an idea of risk of who's renting which feels a bit patronising at times.

providing the loan did not go into default it should not affect your score however it may show on your report if you missed more than x3 payments even if they were late ! but if its satisfied it will show that on your report ,but as its x3 years ago most companies will take this into account and should not have a negative impact on your score

Defaults, late payments & everything else stay on your credit file for 6 years.

Each year, the points will get better though, as you're getting further away in time from your defaults/late payments. So, even a default 5 years ago will have an effect on your credit score.

If you have any debt, use your stashed away money to repay it. It's not an instant fix.

There are loads of tips about improving your credit score on the MSE website. It takes a minute of 3 months.

First things first, check your credit score, or you might be worrying about nothing!

Not much you can do to change the past but you can make positive changes to your future by learning from mistakes. Get a credit report , it will put your mind at ease. It did for me.

Credit report takes no consideration of money you have saved away. Feel free to pm if you want to discuss topic more.

Yes with Experian. Never used the free ones but worth a go first.

Ask the agency who they use for the credit check if its experian you need to check experian if its call credit use noodle if it equifax check equifax if you want. My credit file covers both experian and equifax I believe and has the 30 day free trial

I've done noodle.happy with their report.so I think we may be ok.when we find a place we will see who they use.i guess it will be Experian.I shall then take it from there.they cant be too different can they?.

Yes they can if your loan only reported negative to experian then experian could be a lot different same with equifax. Noddle is for callcredit who are the smallest out of the 3 credit agencies. For a rental I'd guess theyd use experian though. Last year I decided to sort mine and my experian was near perfect 998 but equifax was pretty shocking due to me always paying my mobile bill a week late rather than getting them to change the date to the end of the month

We applied for our mortgage at 21...having always paid for everything and not taken credit we had to put a 16% deposit down

Worked out better since we only pay £245 a month mortgage payments but we also used experian to see the score.

As everyone above has said experian is a great tool. However, there are many different credit search companies in use, so even though experian may have you with a good score another will have a slightly different reading. It's impossible to keep up with.

In June this year I decided to go self employed and start up my own business. I am the only person north of Glasgow that does my job and the market was wide open, I checked my scores on experian, everything was good so I applied for start up loans and grants. I failed them all as the provider used Equifax who didn't have me on the voters roll even though I was and behind with a Virgin media payment that I had no clue about. So in effect I had to self fund it all which wasn't easy but all good now.

If you are confident with your credit history and haven't been rejected for anything before, check experian or such like and go for it. If you fail it's not the end of the world as you then can go and rectify it. Wishing you all the best xx

Sadly your credit score isn't based on assets

It's based on your exposure to credit and track record of paying it back

It's not a balance sheet assessment more a cash flow analysis and debt payment analysis

Only relevant if the credit agency uses them for the search - most use experian - and they all asses credit in a different way

so then u got me worried again.so i did experian.they gave a better number,but said we were only "fair".the other site said we were close to excellent,but a lower number.lol.so i shall just wait and see

yes wait and see who you will be checked by but for a rental I think you'd likely be ok at fair. They use different number amounts experian go up to 999 and equifax go to about 500 I think. I've had trouble with equifax and electoral register before as one of the above posters mentioned 3 hours on the phone will I contested it to get no where

When we first moved to the UK we didn't have any credit history here (credit scores are not transferable from the US ).

We didn't want to get a guarantor or anything so we just paid 6 months rent up front. If you have money stashed away, you could always go with that route. They usually do the check to make sure you'll pay the rent so if you pay up front, they don't care much about the score. Each agency will have different rules about how much you'd have to pay up front.
